FULL DISCRETE NONLINEAR GALERKIN METHOD FOR THE NAVIER-STOKES EQUATIONS

This paper deals with the inertial manifold and the approximate inertial manifold concepts of the Navier-Stokes equations with nonhomogeneous boundary conditions and inertial algorithm. Furtheremore, we provide the error estimates of the approximate solutions of the Navier-Stokes Equations.     

Rational approximation in the complex plane using a τ-method and computer algebra

Numerous versions of the Lanczos τ-methods have been extensively used to produce polynomial approximations for functions verifying a linear differential equation with polynomial coefficients. In the case of an initial-value problem, an adapted τ-method based on Chebyshev series and the use of symbolic computation lead to a rational approximation of the solution on a region of the complex plane. Numerical examples show that the simplicity of the method does not prevent a high accuracy of results. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.     

Coupling and Poisson approximation

We give an overview of the Stein-Chen method for establishing Poisson approximations of various random variables. Couplings of certain variables are used to gives explicit bounds for the total variation distance between the distribution of a random variable and a Poisson variable. Some applications are given. In some cases, explicit couplings may be used to obtain good estimates; in other applications it suffices to show the existence of couplings with certain monotonicity properties.Supported by the Göran Gustafsson Foundation for Research in Natural Sciences and Medicine.     

Mechanosynthesis of YIG and GdIG: A Structural and Mössbauer Study

We have investigated the mechanosynthesis of gadolinium and yttrium iron garnets by high-energy ball-milling of α-Fe₂O₃ and Gd₂O₃ or α-Fe₂O₃ and Y₂O₃, respectively, followed by short thermal annealings conducted at moderate temperatures. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction and Mössbauer spectroscopy, in order to determine the influence of the milling time and annealing conditions on the final products. For as-milled samples of each rare-earth system, the results revealed the formation of perovskite phases, in relative amounts that depend on the milling time. The formation of garnet phases was observed in as-annealed samples treated at 1000°C for 2 h or 1100°C for 3 h, i.e., at very modest annealing requirements when compared with ordinary solid-state-reaction processes performed without previous high-energy milling. Also, the occurrence was verified of a milling time for which the relative amount of garnet phases formed by annealing was maximized. This time depends on the rare-earth composing the garnet phase and on the annealing temperature.     

Mössbauer study of nanodimensional nickel ferrite – mechanochemical synthesis and catalytic properties

Iron–nickel spinel oxide NiFe₂O₄ nanoparticles have been prepared by the combination of chemical precipitation and subsequent mechanical milling. For comparison, their analogue obtained by thermal synthesis is also studied. Phase composition and structural properties of iron–nickel oxides are investigated by X-ray diffraction and Mössbauer spectroscopy. Their catalytic behavior in methanol decomposition to CO and methane is tested. An influence of the preparation method on the reduction and catalytic properties of iron–nickel samples is established.

A Universal Logic Approach to Adaptive Logics

In this paper, adaptive logics are studied from the viewpoint of universal logic (in the sense of the study of common structures of logics). The common structure of a large set of adaptive logics is described. It is shown that this structure determines the proof theory as well as the semantics of the adaptive logics, and moreover that most properties of the logics can be proved by relying solely on the structure, viz. without invoking any specific properties of the logics themselves.

Modeling film flows down inclined planes

A new model of film flow down an inclined plane is derived by a method combining results of the classical long wavelength expansion to a weighted-residuals technique. It can be expressed as a set of three coupled evolution equations for three slowly varying fields, the thickness h, the flow-rate q, and a new variable that measures the departure of the wall shear from the shear predicted by a parabolic velocity profile. Results of a preliminary study are in good agreement with theoretical asymptotic properties close to the instability threshold, laboratory experiments beyond threshold and numerical simulations of the full Navier-Stokes equations.
