Some remarks on derivations in Banach algebras and related results

Summary In the first section of this paper we consider some functional equations which are closely connected to derivations (i.e. additive mappings with the propertyD(ab) = aD(b) + D(a)b) on Banach algebras. IfD is a derivation on some algebraA, then the equationD(a) = – aD(a ^–1 )a holds for all invertible elementsa A. It seems natural to ask whether this functional equation characterizes derivations among all additive mappings. It is too much to expect an affirmative answer to this question in arbitrary algebras, since it may happen that even in normed algebras the group of all invertible elements contains only scalar multiples of the identity. We try to answer the question above in Banach algebras, since in Banach algebras invertible elements exist in abundance. In the second section of the paper we prove some results concerning representability of quadratic forms by bilinear forms.     

Maximal estimates on measure spaces for weak-type multipliers

We describe sufficient conditions for transferring from locally compact abelian groups to measure spaces the weak-type bounds of maximal operators defined by multipliers of weak type. This leads to homomorphism theorems for maximal multiplier operators. Communicated by Guido Weiss     

C*-dynamical systems that are asymptotically highly anticommutative

It is shown that with probability 1 on , resp. ongx the irrational rotation algebra with respect to the CAT map and the generalized Price-Powers shiftA _X are asymptotically highly anticommutative.     

On the continuity of midpoint hull convex set-valued functions

Summary The concept of hull convexity (midpoint hull convexity) for set-valued functions in vector spaces is examined. This concept, introduced by A. V. Fiacco and J. Kyparisis (Journal of Optimization Theory and Applications,43 (1986), 95–126), is weaker than one of convexity (midpoint convexity).The main result is a sufficient condition for a midpoint hull convex set-valued function to be continuous. This theorem improves a result obtained by K. Nikodem (Bulletin of the Polish Academy of Sciences, Mathematics,34 (1986), 393–399).     

Algebras of sets generating non-barrelled spaces

IfA is a -algebra on setX, thenl ₀ (X,A) is a barrelled space of class ₀. IfA is an algebra, there are conditions which imply thatl ₀ (X,A) is suprabarelled. Here, wheneverA is an algebra, we give conditions forl ₀ (X,A) to be not barrelled which are related with the existence of non-trivial convergent sequences.Supported in part by DGICYT, project PB91-0407 and by the Institució Valenciana d'Estudis i Investigació, project 023.     

Nonlinear transformations of the canonical gauss measure on Hilbert space and absolute continuity

The papers of R. Ramer and S. Kusuoka investigate conditions under which the probability measure induced by a nonlinear transformation on abstract Wiener space(,H,B) is absolutely continuous with respect to the abstract Wiener measure. These conditions reveal the importance of the underlying Hilbert spaceH but involve the spaceB in an essential way. The present paper gives conditions solely based onH and takes as its starting point, a nonlinear transformationT=I+F onH. New sufficient conditions for absolute continuity are given which do not seem easily comparable with those of Kusuoka or Ramer but are more general than those of Buckdahn and Enchev. The Ramer-Itô integral occurring in the expression for the Radon-Nikodym derivative is studied in some detail and, in the general context of white noise theory it is shown to be an anticipative stochastic integral which, under a stronger condition on the weak Gateaux derivative of F is directly related to the Ogawa integral.Research supported by the National Science Foundation and the Air Force Office of Scientific Research Grant No. F49620 92 J 0154 and the Army Research Office Grant No. DAAL 03 92 G 0008.     

Energy functional depending on elastic strain and chemical composition

In this paper we deal with energy functionals depending on elastic strain and chemical composition and we obtain lower semicontinuity results, existence theorems and relaxation in the spacesH ^1,p(; ⁿ)×L ^q (; ^d) with respect to weak convergence.
