An inverse problem for Maxwell's equations in isotropic and non-stationary media

In this article, we consider Maxwell's equations in an isotropic, inhomogeneous and non-stationary medium. We discuss an inverse problem of determining the t-independent components of the coefficients ?, μ in the constitutive relations from a finite number of interior measurements. We prove a Lipschitz stability estimate for the inverse problem by applying the argument on the basis of Carleman estimate.     

Effect of Bi-doping and Mg-excess on the thermoelectric properties of Mg2Si materials

In this work, Bi-doped magnesium silicide compounds were prepared by applying a combination of both, short-time ball milling and heating treatment. The effect of Mg excess was also studied, aiming towards further improvement in thermoelectric properties. The structural modifications of all materials were followed by Powder X-ray diffraction and Scanning Electron Microscopy. Highly dense pellets of Mg₂Si_1−xBi_x (0≤x≤0.035) and Mg_2+δSi_0.975Bi_0.025 (δ=0.04, 0.06 and 0.12) were fabricated via hot pressing and studied in terms of Seebeck coefficient, electrical and thermal conductivities and free carrier concentration. Their thermoelectric performance, at high temperature range, is presented and the maximum value of the dimensionless-figure-of-merit (ZT) is found to be 0.68 at 810 K, for Mg₂Si_0.97Bi_0.03.     

Isatindolignanoside A,a glucosidic indole-lignan conjugate from an aqueous extract of the Isatis indigotica roots

A glucosidic indole-lignan conjugate with a novel carbon skeleton, named isatindolignanoside A (1), was isolated from an aqueous extract of the Isatis indigotica roots “ban lan gen”. Its structure was determined by comprehensive analysis of spectroscopic data, enzyme hydrolysis, and electronic CD calculations. Compound 1 is active against Coxsackie virus B3 and represents the first example of natural product having a structural feature of conjugation between indole and lignan, and its plausible biosynthetic pathway is postulated.     

Asymptotic Behavior of Solutions to the Difference Equation Using the Second Differences of a Liapunov Function

We introduce the concept of the second Liapunov differences in difference equations and show that, in the autonomous case, the second variations can guarantee the existence of solutions tending to zero while others starting arbitrarily near 0 go to ∞. These are based on Yorke's results for ordinary differential equations.

We investigate the existence of unbounded solutions and the period-two convergence of solutions of the equation in the title with the parameter γ positive, the remaining parameters nonnegative, and with nonnegative initial conditions.     

Bifurcation analysis on a discrete model of Nicholson's blowflies

In this paper, the discrete Nicholson's blowflies model with delay is considered. First, the stability of the equilibria of the system is investigated by analyzing the characteristic equation and then the existence of fold and Neimark–Sacker bifurcations are verified. Subsequent to that, the direction and stability of the bifurcation are determined by using the normal form theory and center manifold theorem. Finally, some numerical simulations are carried out in order to support the results of mathematical analysis.     

Importance Sampling for p-value Computations in Multivariate Tests

Abstract

An importance sampling procedure is developed to approximate the distribution of an arbitrary function of the eigenvalues for a matrix beta random matrix or a Wishart random matrix. The procedure is easily implemented and provides confidence intervals for the p-values of many of the commonly used test statistics in multivariate analysis. An adaptive procedure allows for the control of either absolute error or relative error in this p-value estimation through the choice of importance sample size.
