Small generators of number fields

If K is a number field of degree n over Q with discriminant D _K and if α∈K generates K, i.e. K=Q(α), then the height of α satisfies with . The paper deals with the existence of small generators of number fields in this sense. We show: (1) For each $n$ there are infinitely many number fields K of degree $n$ with a generator α such that . (2) There is a constant d ² such that every imaginary quadratic number field has a generator α which satisfies .?(3) If K is a totally real number field of prime degree n then one can find an integral generator α with . Influence of surface energy and relative humidity on AFM nanomechanical contact stiffness

The effects of surface functionality and relative humidity (RH) on nanomechanical contact stiffness were investigated using atomic force acoustic microscopy (AFAM), a contact scanned-probe microscopy (SPM) technique. Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) with controlled surface energy were studied systematically in a controlled-humidity chamber. AFAM amplitude images of a micropatterned, graded-surface-energy SAM sample revealed that image contrast depended on both ambient humidity and surface energy. Quantitative AFAM point measurements indicated that the contact stiffness remained roughly constant for the hydrophobic SAM but increased monotonically for the hydrophilic SAM. To correct for this unphysical behavior, a viscoelastic damping term representing capillary forces between the tip and the SAM was added to the data analysis model. The contact stiffness calculated with this revised model remained constant with RH, while the damping term increased strongly with RH for the hydrophilic SAM. The observed behavior is consistent with previous studies of surface energy and RH behavior using AFM pull-off forces. Our results show that surface and environmental conditions can influence accurate measurements of nanomechanical properties with SPM methods such as AFAM.

We show that a theorem of Shchepin and Repovš concerning the smoothness of compacta follows from the theory of semicontinuous relations.     

Cycles throughk vertices in bipartite tournaments

We give a simple proof that everyk-connected bipartite tournament has a cycle through every set ofk vertices. Mapping properties of wave and scattering operators for two-body Schrödinger operators

The modified wave and scattering operators are shown to be bounded between weighted L ²-spaces for two-body Schrödinger operators with long range potentials.

Bounds on the inverses of nonnegative triangular matrices with monotonicity properties

Some bounds on the entries and on the norm of the inverse of triangular matrices with nonnegative and monotone entries are found. All the results are obtained by exploiting the properties of the fundamental matrix of the recurrence relation which generates the sequence of the entries of the inverse matrix. One of the results generalizes a theorem contained in a recent article of one of the authors about Toeplitz matrices.
