In the present paper we propose three new methods for computing sequences of enclosing intervals for a zero of a real function without convexity assumptions.The new methods have been tested on a series of published examples. The numerical experiments show that our methods are comparable in terms of efficiency with the well-known algorithms of Dekker and Brent.The present paper was written when this author was visiting the University of Karlsruhe. Summary We prove convergence and error estimates in Sobolev spaces for the collocation method with tensor product splines for strongly elliptic pseudodifferential equations on the torus. Examples of applications include elliptic partial differential equations with periodic boundary conditions but also the classical boundary integral operators of potential theory on torus-shaped domains in three or more dimensions. For odd-degree splines, we prove convergence of nodal collocation for any strongly elliptic operator. For even-degree splines and midpoint collocation, we find an additional condition for the convergence which is satisfied for the classical boundary integral operators. Our analysis is a generalization to higher dimensions of the corresponding analysis of Arnold and Wendland [4]. 相似文献

Summary The reconstruction from a shaded image of a Lambertian and not self-shadowing surface illuminated by a single distant pointwise light source may be written as a first-order Hamilton-Jacobi equation.In this paper, we continue the investigation begun in E. Rouy and A. Tourin into the uniqueness of the solution of this equation; the approach is based on the viscosity solutions theory and the dynamic programming principle.More precisely, we concentrate here on the uniqueness of the viscosity solution of this equation in case the measured luminous intensity reflected by the surface is discontinuous along a smooth curve. We prove a general comparison result for a piecewise Lipschitz continuous Hamiltonian and illustrate it by numerical experiments. 相似文献

This paper is a natural extension and continuation of the authors' studies of the astronomical dating problem of Ptolemy's famous Almagest. In previous papers, the authors suggested and developed a new geometrical-statistical method for dating ancient star catalogues. This method was then applied to Ptolemy's Almagest. The results obtained do not confirm the traditional dating of the Almagest (2nd century AD or 2nd century BC) but shift it to the epoch AD 600–1300. In this paper, we extend our analysis to other parts of the Almagest and study the dating problem for series of lunar eclipses described in the Almagest and for the covering of stars by planets. The results obtained completely agree with our previous results and give the same time interval, AD 600–1300. 相似文献

In this paper it is shown that the local discretization error ofs-stage singly-implicit methods of orderp can be estimated by embedding these methods intos-stage two-step Runge-Kutta methods of orderp+1, wherep=s orp=s+1. These error estimates do not require any extra evaluations of the right hand side of the differential equations. Numerical methods for ordinary initial value problems that do not depend on special properties of the system are usually found in the class of linear multistage multivalue methods, first formulated by J.C. Butcher. Among these the explicit methods are easiest to implement. For these reasons there has been considerable research activity devoted to generating methods of this class which utilize independent function evaluations that can be performed in parallel. Each such group of concurrent function evaluations can be regarded as a stage of the method. However, it turns out that parallelism affords only limited opportunity for reducing the computing time with such methods. This is most evident for the simple linear homogeneous constant-coefficient test problem, whose solution is essentially a matter of approximating the exponential by an algebraic function. For a given number of stages and a given number of saved values, parallelism offers a somewhat enlarged set of algebraic functions from which to choose. However, there is absolutely no benefit in having the degree of parallelism (number of processors) exceed the number of saved values of the method. Thus, in particular, parallel one-step methods offer no speedup over serial one-step methods for the standard linear test problem. Although the implication of this result for general nonlinear problems is unclear, there are indications that dramatic speedups are not possible in general.
