We develop constructive techniques to show that non-isomorphic 3-connected matroids that are representable over a fixed finite field and that have the same Tutte polynomial abound. In particular, for most prime powers q, we construct infinite families of sets of 3-connected matroids for which the matroids in a given set are non-isomorphic, are representable over GF(q), and have the same Tutte polynomial. Furthermore, the cardinalities of the sets of matroids in a given family grow exponentially as a function of rank, and there are many such families.In Memory of Gian-Carlo Rota  相似文献

In this paper we study the direct decomposability of free Tarski algebras. We show that infinite freely generated Tarski algebras are directly indecomposable, whereas finite freely generated Tarski algebras can only be decomposed into a direct product of two factors, one of which is the two-element Tarski algebra.  相似文献

The notions of “labelled set” and “numerosity” are introduced to generalize the counting process of finite sets. The resulting numbers, called numerosities, are then used to develop nonstandard analysis. The existence of a numerosity function is equivalent to the existence of a selective ultrafilter, hence it is independent of the axioms of ZFC.  相似文献

Operators on manifolds with corners that have base configurations with geometric singularities can be analysed in the frame of a conormal symbolic structure which is in spirit similar to the one for conical singularities of Kondrat'ev's work. Solvability of elliptic equations and asymptotics of solutions are determined by meromorphic conormal symbols. We study the case when the base has edge singularities which is a natural assumption in a number of applications. There are new phenomena, caused by a specific kind of higher degeneracy of the underlying symbols. We introduce an algebra of meromorphic edge operators that depend on complex parameters and investigate meromorphic inverses in the parameter-dependent elliptic case. Among the examples are resolvents of elliptic differential operators on manifolds with edges.  相似文献

We study the solvability of special vectorial Hamilton-Jacobi systems of the form F(Du(x))=0 in a Sobolev space. In this paper we establish the general existence theorems for certain Dirichlet problems using suitable approximation schemes called W1,p-reduction principles that generalize the similar reduction principle for Lipschitz solutions. Our approach, to a large extent, unifies the existing methods for the existence results of the special Hamilton-Jacobi systems under study. The method relies on a new Baire's category argument concerning the residual continuity of a Baire-one function. Some sufficient conditions for W1,p-reduction are also given along with certain generalization of some known results and a specific application to the boundary value problem for special weakly quasiregular mappings.  相似文献

We introduce a notion of “firm” (or uniform) asymptotic cone to an unbounded subset of a normed space. We relate this notion to a concept of “firm” asymptotic function. We use these notions to study boundedness properties which can be applied to continuity questions for some operations on sets and functions. Such questions arise in stability analysis of Hamilton-Jacobi equations. We present some other applications such as an extension of a theorem of Dieudonné and existence results in optimization and fixed point theory.  相似文献
