Continuous selections avoiding extreme points

It is shown that if X is a countably paracompact collectionwise normal space, Y is a Banach space and φ:X→Y² is a lower semicontinuous mapping such that φ(x) is Y or a compact convex subset with Cardφ(x)>1 for each x∈X, then φ admits a continuous selection f:X→Y such that f(x) is not an extreme point of φ(x) for each x∈X. This is an affirmative answer to the problem posed by V. Gutev, H. Ohta and K. Yamazaki [V. Gutev, H. Ohta and K. Yamazaki, Selections and sandwich-like properties via semi-continuous Banach-valued functions, J. Math. Soc. Japan 55 (2003) 499-521].     

Urysohn universal space, its development and Hausdorff's approach

Three approaches to a direct construction of Urysohn universal space are compared, namely those of Urysohn, Hausdorff and Katětov. More details are devoted to the unpublished Hausdorff's approach that is shown to work in a more general situation, too.     

Adaptive finite element methods for Cahn–Hilliard equations

We develop a method for adaptive mesh refinement for steady state problems that arise in the numerical solution of Cahn–Hilliard equations with an obstacle free energy. The problem is discretized in time by the backward-Euler method and in space by linear finite elements. The adaptive mesh refinement is performed using residual based a posteriori estimates; the time step is adapted using a heuristic criterion. We describe the space–time adaptive algorithm and present numerical experiments in two and three space dimensions that demonstrate the usefulness of our approach.     

Mathematical modelling of surface vibration with volume constraint and its analysis

A hyperbolic problem with volume constraint is investigated by means of a minimizing method called the discrete Morse flow. A weak solution is introduced in a constructive way and results of numerical computations are shown.     

Existence results for critical singular elliptic systems

In this paper, we consider semilinear elliptic systems with both singular and critical growth terms in bounded domains. The existence of a nontrivial solution is obtained by variational methods.     

Rational-exponential solutions of nonlinear equations

A new, straightforward and systematic approach to construct rational-exponential solutions is proposed. The method is based on the formal perturbation theory. Explicit rational-exponential solutions for the two-dimensional elliptic sine-Gordon and Korteweg-de Vries equations are constructed. The method used is quite general and applicable to most nonlinear evolution equations, including certain multidimensional equations.     

Uniform stability estimates for solutions and their gradients to the Boltzmann equation: A unified approach

As to the Cauchy problem for the spatially inhomogeneous Boltzmann equation with cut-off, we prove uniform stability estimates for solutions and their gradients in a unified and elementary way.     

Online scheduling with reassignment

This paper studies online scheduling problems with reassignment on two identical machines. We can reassign some jobs under certain rules after all the jobs have been assigned. Three different versions are studied and optimal algorithms are proposed.     

Parameter-based Fisher's information of orthogonal polynomials

The Fisher information of the classical orthogonal polynomials with respect to a parameter is introduced, its interest justified and its explicit expression for the Jacobi, Laguerre, Gegenbauer and Grosjean polynomials found.     

Ideals of varieties parameterized by certain symmetric tensors

The ideal of a Segre variety P^n₁×?×P^n_t?P^{(n₁+1)?(n_t+1)−1} is generated by the 2-minors of a generic hypermatrix of indeterminates (see [H.T. Hà, Box-shaped matrices and the defining ideal of certain blowup surface, J. Pure Appl. Algebra 167 (2-3) (2002) 203-224. MR1874542 (2002h:13020)] and [R. Grone, Decomposable tensors as a quadratic variety, Proc. Amer. Math. 43 (2) (1977) 227-230. MR0472853 (57 #12542)]). We extend this result to the case of Segre-Veronese varieties. The main tool is the concept of “weak generic hypermatrix” which allows us to treat also the case of projection of Veronese surfaces from a set of general points and of Veronese varieties from a Cohen-Macaulay subvariety of codimension 2.
