Assignment of chemical shifts in benzohydroxamic acid and structure of its silylated derivatives by 15N enrichment

¹⁵N isotopic enrichment was necessary for the unequivocal assignment of the ¹H NMR lines to the protons in the NH–OH fragment of benzohydroxamic acid, BHXA, C₆H₅CONHOH, in dry dimethyl sulfoxide solutions. The assignment [δ(NH) = 11.21, δ(OH) = 9.01, ¹J(¹⁵N,¹H) = 102.2 Hz, ²J(¹⁵N,¹H) <1.5 Hz], which is opposite to that used by other authors, confirms the assignment extended to BHXA by Brown and co‐workers from the spectra of acetohydroxamic acid. The enrichment allowed also assignment of the ²⁹Si lines in the spectra of disilylated benzohydroxamic acid, (Z)‐tert‐butyldimethylsilyl N‐tert‐butyldimethylsilyloxybenzoimidate (2) and (Z)‐tert‐butyldiphenylsilyl N‐tert‐butyldiphenylsilyloxybenzoimidate (3), and confirmed structure of the monosilylated products, N‐tert‐butyldiphenylsilyloxybenzamide (4) and N‐tert‐butyldiphenylsilyloxy benzoimidic acid (5). Function spaces over GO-spaces: Part I

We describe the structure of spaces of continuous step functions over GO-spaces. We establish a relation between the Dedekind completion of a GO-space L and properties of the space of continuous functions from L to 2 with finitely many steps. We use the established relation to prove that a countably compact GO-space L has Lindelöf Cp(L) iff the Dedekind remainder of L is Lindelöf and every compact subspace of L is metrizable. Or equivalently, a countably compact GO-space L has Lindelöf Cp(L) iff every compact subspace of L is metrizable and a Gδ-set in L. Other results are obtained.     

Bounds on the inverses of nonnegative triangular matrices with monotonicity properties

Some bounds on the entries and on the norm of the inverse of triangular matrices with nonnegative and monotone entries are found. All the results are obtained by exploiting the properties of the fundamental matrix of the recurrence relation which generates the sequence of the entries of the inverse matrix. One of the results generalizes a theorem contained in a recent article of one of the authors about Toeplitz matrices.     

Extendible elements of the alternating groups

An element σ of A_n, the Alternating group of degree n, is extendible in S_n, the Symmetric group of degree n, if there exists a subgroup H of S_n but not A_n whose intersection with A_n is the cyclic group generated by σ. A simple number-theoretic criterion, in terms of the cycle-decomposition, for an element of A_n to be extendible in S_n is given here.     

Congruences,equational theories and lattice representations

We survey results concerning the representations of lattices as lattices of congruences and as lattices of equational theories. Recent results and open problems will be mentioned.To László Fuchs on the occasion of his 70th birthday     

On the geometries of the rational unfoldings of X k

With a view to applications to self-regulating dynamical processes in biology, we determine the geometric structure of what we call isotangent curves, i.e. curves parametrized by the slopes of their points. They come up naturally as bifurcation curves of rational unfoldings of X ^k, and we classify them according to degree and number of cusps. They, as well as their isotangent involute curves, turn up in simulations of these processes.     

Pair formation in age-structured populations

The modelling problems associated with pair formation in age-structured populations are discussed in this paper. The author also formulates a class of models for pair formation in human populations and derives some results on persistent distributions.
