A spectral Galerkin approximation of the Orr-Sommerfeld eigenvalue problem in a semi-infinite domain

Summary The convergence of a Galerkin approximation of the Orr-Sommerfeld eigenvalue problem, which is defined in a semi-infinite domain, is studied theoretically. In case the system of trial functions is based on a composite of Jacobi polynomials and an exponential transform of the semi-infinite domain, the error of the Galerkin approximation is estimated in terms of the transformation parametera and the numberN of trial functions. Finite or infinite-order convergence of the spectral Galerkin method is obtained depending on how the transformation parameter is chosen. If the transformation parameter is fixed, then convergence is of finite order only. However, ifa is varied proportional to 1/N with an exponent 0<<1, then the approximate eigenvalue converges faster than any finite power of 1/N asN34.gif" alt="infin" align="MIDDLE" BORDER="0">. Some numerical examles are given.     

Stochastic flows on the boundaries of SL(n,R)

Summary We study the asymptotic stability of the stochastic flows on a class of compact spaces induced by a diffusion process in SL(n, R) or GL(n, R). These compact spaces are called boundaries of SL(n, R), which include SO(n), the flag manifold, the sphereS ⁿ–1 and the Grassmannians. The one point motions of these flows are Brownian motions. For almost every, , we determine the set of stable points. This is a random open set whose complement has zero Lebesgue measure. The distance between any two points in the same component of this set tends to zero exponentially fast under the flow. The Lyapunov exponents at stable points are computed explicitly. We apply our results to a stochastic flow onS ⁿ–2 generated by a stochastic differential equation which exhibits some nice symmetry.Research supported in part by Hou Yin Dong Education Foundation of China On leave from Nankai University, Tianjin, China     

The properties of the metal complex hydrides

The essential features (geometries of the minima and of the saddle points, energy barriers) of the potential energy surface of the four hydrides YXH₄ mentioned in the title have been determined with two basis sets, of minimal and DZ quality respectively. The importance of the different extent of the deformation of the XH₄ group in the different structures of the four hydrides is brought out and discussed. The aspects of charge distribution and bonding are examined drawing on population analysis, comparison of the electrostatic molecular potentials and decomposition of the interaction energy (this last referred to the Y⁺ + XH ₄ ^– 34k47301t121p4j/xxlarge8594.gif" alt="rarr" align="BASELINE" BORDER="0"> YXH₄ process). The capability of XH₃ in effecting the etherolytic disruption of the Y-H bond is finally brought out.     

SAPO-34分子筛骨架稳定性的研究

Synergistic effects in mixed gas chromatographic stationary phases containing hepatkis(2.3.6-tri-O-pentyl)-β-cyclodextrin and AgNO3 or TINO3 in the separation of xylene isomers

Summary The gas chromatographic separation of xylene isomers using special mixed stationary phases consisting of heptakis(2.3.6-tri-O-pentyl)-β-CD-AgNO₃, heptakis (2.3.6-tri-O-pentyl)-β-CD-TINO₃ or bentone-34-AgNO₃ is investigated. The first two have positive synergistic effects for the separation of m, and p-xylene isomers, but negative synergistic effects for the m, and oisomers. The separation effects depend on temperature, mixing ratio and how mixing is accomplished.

自行研制了Bentone-34/OV-1高效石英毛细管气相色谱柱,并利用该柱分别对二甲苯、二氯苯和二氯甲苯异构体3种体系进行分析.在选用的色谱条件下,难分离物质对二甲苯和间二甲苯分离度达3;间二氯苯和对二氯苯分离度达1 3.结果表明该柱具有分离效果好,分析速度快的优点.     

H+H2O reaction dynamics: state distribution for the OH product

A method has been developed to study the dynamics of high barrier reactions by combining hot-atom production by laser photolysis and fast-product detection by laser induced fluorescence. The nascent OH rotational, vibrational and fine structure state distributions produced in the endothermic reaction 340_2004_Article_BF00697457_TeX2GIFIE1.gif" alt=" $$H + H_2 O \to \underline {OH(K,\upsilon ,f)} + H_2$$ " align="middle" border="0"> have been measured with hot hydrogen atoms from the photodissociation of HBr at 193 nm. OH rotational excitation is low and corresponds to a partitioning of only around 3% of the total reaction energy to OH rotation. OH could only be observed in the vibrational ground state, i.e.(v=1)/(v=0)0.1. The OH spin doublets are produced statistically, but the partitioning in the -doublets is very non-statistical with a strong preference for the ⁺-component ((⁺)/(^–)=3.2±1.0) demonstrating the exit channel of the reaction to be preferentially planar. By measuring reactant and product densities at short times, an absolute total cross-section of 0.24±0.1[Ų] has been obtained.     

Certification of reference materials and accreditation of reference material producers: Questionable terminology leads to confusion

In the view of the Deutscher Kalibrierdienst (DKD) , a certifying body for reference materials can be considered to be a calibration laboratory. Therefore, accreditation of calibration laboratories in accordance with ISO/IEC 17025 is the most appropriate way to establish confidence in certificates for reference materials. If necessary, the criteria of ISO/IEC 17025 can be tailored to specific cases. There is no need to provide any new kind of reference-material specific accreditation. However, in view of the variety of reference materials and the practice existing in other countries, accreditation of testing laboratories and product certification bodies may optionally be acceptable as long as the same stringent principles with respect to traceability and measurement uncertainty are applied. Such accreditations but not accreditations of reference material producers (ISO Guide 34) are also covered by existing international mutual recognition arrangements (MRA).     

Three-component cyclization of hydroxylamino-substituted quinoline with reactive methylene compounds and formaldehyde: new method for the synthesis of 7-(isoxazolidin-2-yl)-6-fluoroquinolones

A one-step procedure was developed for the synthesis of new 6-fluoro-7-(isoxazolidin-2-yl)-4-oxo-1,4-dihydroquinolines. The procedure is based on the 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of the azomethine oxide and 1,1-disubstituted alkenes, which are generated in situ from 6-fluoro-7-hydroxylamino-4-oxo-1,4-dihydroquinoline-3-carboxylic acid and CH-active compounds (dialkyl malonates, ethyl acetoacetate), respectively, in the presence of formaldehyde at 100—120 °C.
