Hypersurfaces of the Euclidean sphere with nonnegative Ricci curvature

In this paper we prove that a compact oriented hypersurface of a Euclidean sphere with nonnegative Ricci curvature and infinite fundamental group is isometric to an H(r)-torus with constant mean curvature. Furthermore, we generalize, whithout any hypothesis about the mean curvature, a characterization of Clifford torus due to Hasanis and Vlachos. Received: 19 March 2002     

Inner Radius of Univalence for a Strongly Starlike Domain

 The inner radius of univalence of a domain D with Poincaré density ρ _D is the possible largest number σ such that the condition ∥ S _f ∥ _D  = sup _{w∈ D} ρ _D (w) ⁻²∥ S _f (z) ∥ ≤ σ implies univalence of f for a nonconstant meromorphic function f on D, where S _f is the Schwarzian derivative of f. In this note, we give a lower bound of the inner radius of univalence for strongly starlike domains of order α in terms of the order α. A remark on the moduli field of a curve

We give a purely algebro-geometric proof of the fact that every nonsingular projective curve can be defined over a finite extension of its moduli field. This extends a result byWolfart [7] to curves over fields of arbitrary characteristic. Received: 30 November 2001     

Combined Elapsed Time and Matrix-Analytic Method for the Discrete Time GI/G/1 and GI X /G/1 Systems

In this paper, we show that the discrete GI/G/1 system can be easily analysed as a QBD process with infinite blocks by using the elapsed time approach in conjunction with the Matrix-geometric approach. The positive recurrence of the resulting Markov chain is more easily established when compared with the remaining time approach. The G-measure associated with this Markov chain has a special structure which is usefully exploited. Most importantly, we show that this approach can be extended to the analysis of the GI ^X /G/1 system. We also obtain the distributions of the queue length, busy period and waiting times under the FIFO rule. Exact results, based on computational approach, are obtained for the cases of input parameters with finite support – these situations are more commonly encountered in practical problems.     

End effects for pre-stressed and pre-polarized piezoelectric solids in anti-plane shear

This paper is concerned with investigation of the influence of pre-stress and pre-polarization on the decay of Saint-Venant end effects in piezoelectric solids. This issue is examined within the framework of incremental anti-plane shear states for prestressed and prepolarized solids. Attention is confined to a specific class of materials, namely those of hexagonal 6mm or 4mm symmetry. It is shown that the mechanical and electrical fields uncouple in this case, and the governing system of coupled second-order linear partial differential equations uncouple to a single homogeneous second-order equation with constant coefficients for the displacement and a Poisson equation for the electric potential. The exact decay rate for mechanical and electrical end effects is determined and the influence of pre-stress and pre-polarization is assessed. Motivation for this work arises from the current rapid developments in smart materials technology.     

On the symplectic structures on moduli space of stable sheaves over a K3 or abelian surface and on Hilbert scheme of points

Fix a smooth very ample curve C on a K3 or abelian surface X. Let $ \mathcal{M} $ denote the moduli space of pairs of the form (F, s), where F is a stable sheaf over X whose Hilbert polynomial coincides with that of the direct image, by the inclusion map of C in X, of a line bundle of degree d over C, and s is a nonzero section of F. Assume d to be sufficiently large such that F has a nonzero section. The pullback of the Mukai symplectic form on moduli spaces of stable sheaves over X is a holomorphic 2-form on $ \mathcal{M} $. On the other hand, $ \mathcal{M} $ has a map to a Hilbert scheme parametrizing 0-dimensional subschemes of X that sends (F, s) to the divisor, defined by s, on the curve defined by the support of F. We prove that the above 2-form on $ \mathcal{M} $ coincides with the pullback of the symplectic form on the Hilbert scheme.
