The invertibility of the product of unbounded Toeplitz operators

In this note I give necessary and sufficient conditions on outer functionsf andg for the operator to be bounded and invertible on H². I also discuss the relationship of this question to two open questions in operator theory and weighted norm inequalities.     

On nonnegative solvability of linear operator equations

LetE be a Banach lattice having order continuous norm. Suppose, moreover,T is a nonnegative reducible operator having a compact iterate and which mapsE into itself. The purpose of this work is to extend the previous results of the authors, concerning nonnegative solvability of (kernel) operator equations on generalL ^p-spaces. In particular, we provide necessary and sufficient conditions for the operator equation x=T x+y to possess a nonnegative solutionxE wherey is a given nonnegative and nontrivial element ofE and is any given positive parameter.     

Incomplete idempotent Schröder quasigroups and related packing designs

Summary In this paper it is proved that, for any positive integern 2, 3 (mod 4),n 7, there exists an incomplete idempotent Schröder quasigroup with one hole of size two IISQ(n, 2) except forn = 10. It is also proved that for any positive integern 0, 1 (mod 4), there exists an idempotent Schröder quasigroup ISQ(n) except forn = 5 and 9. These results completely determine the spectrum of ISQ(n) and provide an application to the packing of a class of edge-coloured block designs.Research supported by NSERC grant A-5320.Research supported by NSFC grant 19231060-2.     

Combinatorial invariance of Stanley-Reisner rings

In this short note we show that Stanley—Reisner rings of simplicial complexes, which have had a dramatic application in combinatorics [2, p. 41], possess a rigidity property in the sense that they determine their underlying simplicial complexes.     

Processes of flats induced by higher dimensional processes III

Stationary processes of k-flats in ^d can be thought of as point processes on the Grassmannian _k ^d of k-dimensional subspaces of ^d . If such a process is sampled by a (d–k+ j)-dimensional space F, it induces a process of j-flats in F. In this work we will investigate the possibility of determining the original k-process from knowledge of the intensity measures of the induced j-processes. We will see that this is impossible precisely when 1<k<d–1 and j=0,...,2[r/2]–1, where r is the rank of the manifold _k ^d . We will show how the problem is equivalent to the study of the kernel of various integral transforms, these will then be investigated using harmonic analysis on Grassmannian manifolds.The research of the first and third authors was supported in part by NSF grants DMS-9207019 and DMS-9304284. Homotopy types for tamely approximable Sobolev maps between manifolds

We define a class ^p (M,N) of Sobolev maps from a manifoldM into a manifoldN, in such a way that each mapu ^p (M, N) has a well defined [p]-homotopy type, providedN satisfies a topological hypothesis. Using this, we prove the existence of minimizers in [p]-homotopy classes for some polyconvex variational problems.     

Zero cycles on conic fibrations and a conjecture of Bloch

Let X be a smooth projective surface over a number field k. Let (CH₀(X)) denote the Chow group of zero-cyles modulo rational equivalence on X. Let CH₀(X) be the subgroup of CH ₀(X) consisting of classes which vanish when going over to an arbitrary completion of k. Bloch put forward a conjecture asserting that this group is isomorphic to the Tate-Shafarevich group of a certain Galois module atttached to X. In this paper, we disprove this general conjecture. We produce a conic bundle X over an elliptic curve, for which the group (CH₀(X) is not zero, but the Galois-theoretic Tate-Shafarevich group vanishes.     

A perturbation bound for the generalized polar decomposition

LetA be anm×n complex matrix. A decompositionA=QH is termed ageneralized polar decomposition ofA ifQ is anm×n subunitary matrix (sometimes also called a partial isometry) andH a positive semidefinite Hermitian matrix. It was proved that a nonzero matrixA ^m×n has a unique generalized polar decompositionA=QH with the property (Q ^H )=(H), whereQ ^H denotes the conjugate transpose ofQ and (H) the column space ofH. The main result of this note is a perturbation bound forQ whenA is perturbed.     

Variable step size destabilizes the Störmer/leapfrog/verlet method

For fixed step-sizeh the Störmer method is stable for the standard test equationÿ= ² y,>0, if and only ifh<2. We show that for variable step sizeh _n there does not exist a (positive) limit onh which ensures stability. Nor can we guarantee stability if, in addition, we limit the step size ratioh _n/h _n–1.This work was supported in part by National Science Foundation Grant DMS 90 15533.     

Perturbed unstable variational inequalities with unbounded operators on approximately given sets

The stability and convergence of the solutions of perturbed and regularized variational inequality to the solutions of the primary (unstable a priori) variational inequality with proper monotone operator are investigated. All the objects of inequality: the operatorA, the right-hand partf and the set of constrains are to be perturbed. At the same time no assumptions of boundedness and smoothness of the operatorA are used. The connection between the parameters of perturbations, which guarantees strong convergence of approximate solutions, is established. It is proved that the existence of the solution to the unperturbed variational inequality is necessary and sufficient condition for convergence of the regularized perturbed inequality solutions.This research was supported in part by the Ministry of Science Grant 3481-1-91 and by the Ministry of Absorption Center for Absorption in Science.
