1826年,近代综合几何创建人之一、瑞士几何大师Jacob Steiner（1796—1863）提出了两个有趣的问题：（1）在△ABC的无数个外接椭圆中,哪一个的面积最小？（2）在△ABC的无数个内切椭圆中,哪一个的面积最大？△ABC的面积最小的外接椭圆,叫做它的外接Steiner椭圆;△ABC的面积最大的内切椭圆,叫做它的内切Steiner椭圆.
