On a conjecture of Cox and Katz

This note shows that a certain toric quotient of the quintic Calabi-Yau threefold in provides a counterexample to a recent conjecture of Cox and Katz concerning nef cones of toric hypersurfaces. Received: 8 February 2001; in final form: 17 September 2001 / Published online: 1 February 2002     

Remote stereocontrol by the sulfinyl group: Mukaiyama aldol reactions of (S)-2-[2-(p-tolylsulfinyl)phenyl]acetaldehyde in the asymmetric synthesis of β-hydroxyacids and 1,3-diols

(S)-2-[2-(p-Tolylsulfinyl)phenyl]acetaldehyde reacts with different O-silylated ketenethioacetals in the presence of Yb(OTf)₃ yielding β-hydroxythioesters in high yields and diastereoselectivities. The obtained compounds were readily transformed into β-hydroxyacids and their corresponding diols. These Mukaiyama aldol reactions are a direct evidence of the ability of the sulfinyl group to control 1,5- and 1,6-asymmetric induction processes.     

On Some Integral Equations in Hilbert Space with an Application to the Theory of Elasticity

A Volterra type integral equation in a Hilbert space with an additional linear operator L and a spectral parameter depending on time is considered. If the parameter does not belong to the spectrum of L unconditional solvability of the considered problem is proved. In the case where the initial value of the parameter coincides with some isolated point of the spectrum of the operator L sufficient conditions for solvability are established. The obtained results are applied to the partial integral equations associated with a contact problem of the theory of elasticity.     

A study of the fluorescent properties of spin-coated sodium salicylate thin films

Thin films of sodium salicylate were deposited by spin coating from a solution prepared by dissolving sodium salicylate in methanol. The films were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, UV-visible spectroscopy and spectrofluorometry. The films were crystalline with a strong blue fluorescence peak at an emission wavelength of 419.3 nm. The influence of solution concentration, spin speed and annealing temperature on the fluorescence intensity was studied. Optimum results were obtained with a solution whose concentration was 2.5 M. It was found that lower spin speed resulted in higher fluorescence intensity. Moreover, the fluorescence intensity decreased as the annealing temperature was increased. The durability of the films over a period of 30 days was also investigated, and films annealed at higher temperatures were found to be less degraded with time.

Momentum transport and torque scaling in Taylor-Couette flow from an analogy with turbulent convection

We generalize an analogy between rotating and stratified shear flows. This analogy is summarized in Table 1. We use this analogy in the unstable case (centrifugally unstable flow vs. convection) to compute the torque in Taylor-Couette configuration, as a function of the Reynolds number. At low Reynolds numbers, when most of the dissipation comes from the mean flow, we predict that the non-dimensional torque G = T/ν² L, where L is the cylinder length, scales with Reynolds number R and gap width η, G = 1.46η^3/2(1 - η)^-7/4 R ^3/2. At larger Reynolds number, velocity fluctuations become non-negligible in the dissipation. In these regimes, there is no exact power law dependence the torque versus Reynolds. Instead, we obtain logarithmic corrections to the classical ultra-hard (exponent 2) regimes: G = 0.50 . These predictions are found to be in excellent agreement with avail-able experimental data. For compact irreducible sufficiently large 3-manifolds containing 2-sided projective planes, we consider the following Realization Problem: Given a finite subgroup of the outer automorphism group of the fundamental group, is there a finite group of homeomorphisms, which induces this subgroup? 具有某种断面的半群的研究进展

本文综述了几类具有特殊断面的半群的近期研究结果。在介绍逆半群和正则半群的一般结构之后，概述了具有逆断面的正则半群的结构和同余格的研究成果。总结了作为逆断面的推广的可裂断面，纯正断面，正则^*－断面和恰当断面。提出了可以进一步研究的重要的问题。     

催化剂薄层内甲烷水蒸气重整反应强化管内对流换热的数值模拟

本文以竖直圆管内壁催化剂薄层内发生甲烷水蒸气重整反应强化对流换热作为研究对象,对其进行了数值模拟．结果发现,催化剂薄层内的吸热化学反应可以有效地强化对流换热,降低流体和壁面温度,从而对壁面起到保护作用;极限热流密度的大小与流体的入口温度有关,存在最佳入口温度使极限热流密度最大．     

Σ-原子能级的理论计算与分析

通过对Σ-原子的理论分析,数值求解了相应的Dirac方程,得到 了一组Σ-原子的能级值,与实验数据相当吻合;其结果连同K-原子的情况支持了Batty 光学模型势在奇异原子中应用的正确性,进而表明核子间的强相互作用力为吸引力.
