Fixed-sign solutions for a system of singular focal boundary value problems

We consider a system of focal boundary value problems where the nonlinearities may be singular in the independent variable and may also be singular in the dependent arguments. Using Schauder fixed point theorem, we establish criteria such that the system of boundary value problems has at least one fixed-sign solution.     

A duality relation for busy cycles inGI/G/1 queues

Using a generalization of the classical ballot theorem, Niu and Cooper [7] established a duality relation between the joint distribution of several variables associated with the busy cycle inM/G/1 (with a modified first service) and the corresponding joint distribution of several related variables in its dualGI/M/1. In this note, we generalize this duality relation toGI/G/1 queues with modified first services; this clarifies the original result, and shows that the generalized ballot theorem is superfluous for the duality relation.     

On Nash Equilibria for Noncooperative Games Governed by the Burgers Equation

Existence of a Nash equilibrium in a noncooperative game governed by the one-dimensional Burgers equation, proposed in the case of pointwise controls in Ref. 1, is proved under data qualifications that guarantee the diffusion term in the Burgers’ equation to be dominant enough with respect to the uniform convexity of the payoffs. 5-Aza-2′-deoxycytidine reactivates the CDH1 gene without influencing methylation of the entire CpG island or histone modification in a human cancer cell line

It is well-recognized that DNA methylation and histone modifications play critical roles in epigenetic regulation of gene activity through the alteration of chromatin structure. Recent studies have shown that in a subset of cancer cells, the silencing of the human E-cadherin (CDH1) gene is associated with hypermethylation of the CpG island. However, the associated molecular mechanism remains unclear. To understand the mechanism, we have investigated the alteration of CpG island methylation and histone modifications during the reactivation of the CDH1 gene by treatment with 5-aza-2′-deoxycytidine (5-aza-dC). Although the CDH1 gene expression was recovered by treatment with 5-aza-dC in a liver cancer cell line Li21, the methylation status of the entire CpG island and acetylation and methylation status of associated histones were not significantly altered. These results demonstrate that the silenced CDH1 gene can be reactivated without apparent alteration of histone modification or CpG island methylation.     

Patterns in parabolic problems with nonlinear boundary conditions

We obtain existence of asymptotically stable nonconstant equilibrium solutions for semilinear parabolic equations with nonlinear boundary conditions on small domains connected by thin channels. We prove the convergence of eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the Laplace operator in such domains. This information is used to show that the asymptotic dynamics of the heat equation in this domain is equivalent to the asymptotic dynamics of a system of two ordinary differential equations diffusively (weakly) coupled. The main tools employed are the invariant manifold theory and a uniform trace theorem.     

Generators of some Ramanujan formulas

In this paper we prove some Ramanujan type formulas for 1/π but without using the theory of modular forms. Instead we use the WZ—method created by H. Wilf and D. Zeilberger and find some hypergeometric functions in two variables which are second components of WZ—pairs than can be certified using Zeilberger's EKHAD package. These certificates have an additional property which allows us to get generalized Ramanujan's type series which are routinely proven by computer. We call these second hypergeometric components of the WZ—pairs generators. Finding generators seems a hard task but using a kind of experimental research (explained below), we have succeeded in finding some of them. Unfortunately we have not found yet generators for the most impressive Ramanujan's formulas. We also prove some interesting binomial sums for the constant 1/π². Finally we rewrite many of the obtained series using pochhammer symbols and study the rate of convergence. 2000 Mathematics Subject Classification Primary—33C20     

Tail asymptotics for the fundamental period in the MAP/G/1 queue

This paper studies the tail behavior of the fundamental period in the MAP/G/1 queue. We prove that if the service time distribution has a regularly varying tail, then the fundamental period distribution in the MAP/G/1 queue has also regularly varying tail, and vice versa, by finding an explicit expression for the asymptotics of the tail of the fundamental period in terms of the tail of the service time distribution. Our main result with the matrix analytic proof is a natural extension of the result in (de Meyer and Teugels, J. Appl. Probab. 17: 802–813, 1980) on the M/G/1 queue where techniques rely heavily on analytic expressions of relevant functions. I.-S. 工况图在热电厂的设计和运行中具有广泛的用途。本文根据引进型双抽非再热200MW供热机组的技术特点，通过编程在纯凝汽工况、单抽工业抽汽工况、单抽采暖抽汽工况和双抽供热等典型变工况计算的基础上，完成了当新蒸汽负荷、工业抽汽负荷和采暖抽汽负荷发生改变时的变工况计算，并绘制了该机组的运行工况图．     

On the persistence of elliptic lower-dimensional tori in Hamiltonian systems under the first Melnikov condition and Rüssmann’s non-degeneracy condition

In this paper we formulate a theorem on the persistence of elliptic lower-dimensional invariant tori for nearly integrable analytic Hamiltonian systems under the first Melnikov condition and Rüssmann’s non-degeneracy condition, and give the measure estimates of parameters for the non-resonance conditions under Rüssmann’s non-degeneracy condition, which is essential for the proof of our result.
