Poly(glycidyl methacrylate) [poly(GMA)] microspheres of narrow size distribution were prepared in a simple one‐step procedure by dispersion radical polymerization. Depending on the solvent used, poly(GMA) particle size could be controlled in the range of 0.5–4 μm by changing the solubility parameter of the reaction mixture. In N,N′‐dimethylformamide (DMF)/methanol mixture, the particle size increased and the size distribution broadened with decreasing initial solubility parameter. While in the DMF/methanol solvent system, hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) or cellulose acetate butyrate (CAB) were taken as steric stabilizers of the dispersion polymerization, poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) was used in alcoholic media. Contrary to the DMF/methanol system, narrow particle size distributions were obtained with PVP‐stabilized polymerizations in ethanolic, methanolic, propan‐1‐olic or butan‐1‐olic medium. Both the particle size and polydispersity were reduced with increasing stabilizer concentration. If lower molecular‐weight PVP was used, larger microspheres were obtained. Poly(GMA) samples prepared in a neat alcoholic medium virtually quantitatively retained oxirane group content after the polymerization. The internal properties of submicron poly(N‐isopropylmethacrylamide) latex particles were investigated as a function of the methylene bisacrylamide (MBA) concentration used as a crosslinker. Two experimental approaches were performed. First, quasi‐electric light scattering measurements provided the size variation of the particles as a function of temperature, from which the swelling capacity of the particles as a function of MBA were estimated. In addition, the broadening and lowering effects of the volume phase transition temperature were detected from the turbidity of the solutions versus the MBA concentration. Second, observations of the transverse relaxation of protons gave evidence for heterogeneous structures inside the particles; several structural parts were discriminated from one another from different proton mobilities detected through magnetic relaxation rates. Corresponding to the concentration gradients of the crosslinker, the internal particle structures were looser and looser from the core to the shell. The state of the gelation of the polymer particles was governed by the initial amount of the crosslinker introduced into the latex recipe. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. In this work we study in detail the connection between the solutions to the Dirac and Weyl equations and the associated electromagnetic four-potentials.First,it is proven that all solutions to the Weyl equation are degenerate,in the sense that they correspond to an infinite number of electromagnetic four-potentials.As far as the solutions to the Dirac equation are concerned,it is shown that they can be classified into two classes.The elements of the first class correspond to one and only one four-potential,and are called non-degenerate Dirac solutions.On the other hand,the elements of the second class correspond to an infinite number of four-potentials,and are called degenerate Dirac solutions.Further,it is proven that at least two of these fourpotentials are gauge-inequivalent,corresponding to different electromagnetic fields.In order to illustrate this particularly important result we have studied the degenerate solutions to the forcefree Dirac equation and shown that they correspond to massless particles.We have also provided explicit examples regarding solutions to the force-free Weyl equation and the Weyl equation for a constant magnetic field.In all cases we have calculated the infinite number of different electromagnetic fields corresponding to these solutions.Finally,we have discussed potential applications of our results in cosmology,materials science and nanoelectronics. 相似文献

For an optically transparent, UV-reflective film, hollow silica nanospheres smaller than the visible wavelength (<λvis) are prepared and assembled into colloidal glasses, of which interstices are then backfilled with a polymer. The polymer refractive index is matched with the silica shell to minimize backscattering in the visible range, and the average distance between the hollow silica particles is adjusted by tuning the shell thickness to satisfy the interference resonance condition for a UV selective reflection. The resulting composite film shows a strong UV reflection as expected, but it is translucent in visible light due to non-negligible backscattering, which may be caused by large defects or fluctuation of the particle concentration. In order to avoid such backscattering, another polymer is introduced of which the refractive index is matched with the average refractive index of the hollow nanospheres. This allows an optically transparent film that selectively reflects the UV light. Furthermore, spherical aggregates of hollow silica nanospheres called “supraballs” are prepared and their average refractive index is matched with a solvent by adjusting the mixture ratio of water and ethylene glycol, which yields an optically transparent solution, selectively reflecting UV. 相似文献

Particle-turbulence interaction in wall turbulent flows has been studied. A series of experiments varying particle size, particle density, particle loading and flow Re has been conducted. The results show that the larger polystyrene particles (1100 μm) cause an increase in the number of wall ejections, giving rise to an increase in the measured values of the turbulence intensities and Reynolds stresses. On the other hand, the smaller polystyrene particles (120 μm) bring about a decrease in the number of wall ejections, causing a decrease in the measured intensities and Reynolds stresses. These effects are enhanced as the particle loading is increased. It was also found that the heavier glass particles (88 μm) do not bring about any significant modulation of turbulence. In addition, measurements of the burst frequency and the mean streak-spacing show no significant change with increase in particle loading. Based on these observations, a mechanism of particle transport in wall turbulent flows has been proposed, in which the particles are transported (depending on their size, density and flow Re) by the bursting events of the wall regions. 相似文献

The preparation and microwave-absorbing behavior of micrometric silica-modified platelet iron particles (SMPLIP) were investigated. Through precipitation, hydrothermal reaction, silica-modification and reduction with hydrogen, micrometric porous SMPLIP were yielded. The permittivity values of SMPLIP had been significantly decreased due to the presence of silica. Measurements and calculations showed that a 1.93mm thick sample containing SMPLIP as much as 60% by weight was capable of absorbing X band(8.2~12.4GHz) microwaves with reflection loss being greater than -10dB within the frequency range of 8.2~11.36GHz, while the maximum re-flection loss was -14.8dB at 9.4GHz. The results had also shown that it was practicable to prepare thin, light-weight microwave absorbent with SMPLIP. 相似文献
