Controlled structure and density of “living” polystyrene brushes on flat silica surfaces

Thin layers of polystyrene were grown from surface-grafted nitroxide initiators via controlled “living” free radical polymerization. The “reactive” Langmuir-Blodgett deposition method allowed an effective control of the initiator layer density leading to PS brushes with different and high grafting density and stretching. The influence of the grafting density on the layer structure was studied. Comparison with theoretical predictions for monodispersed brushes in bad solvent was discussed. The thickness was found to vary linearly with molecular weight and the density dependence was shown using wetting measurements. Special features of controlled radical nitroxide polymerization from a surface were discussed. A direct comparison of the molecular weight and polydispersity between surface and bulk polymers was made by de-grafting the brushes into a toluene/HF solution. Finally, some evidence of a “surface Fischer” effect was shown from re-initiated layers. Received 20 December 2001

Identity of defect causing nonideality in nearly ideal Au/n-Si Schottky barriers

We have proposed a mechanism of nonideality, i.e., the temperature dependence of the ideality factor, in nearly ideal Au/n-Si Schottky barriers. Because of the nature of metal-induced gap states, positively ionized defects close to the interface are considered to cause local lowering of the Schottky barrier height (SBH) due to downward bending of the energy band. These positively charged defects become neutralized in equilibrium with the Fermi level due to the band bending, when they are very close to the interface. However, because the SBH lowering disappears by the neutralization of donor, the energy level of donor with a usual energy level scheme rises above the Fermi level after the neutralization. This contradiction to the equilibrium neutralization is resolved by Si self-interstitial with a large negative-U property, which is generated by the fabrication process. The energy level of the donor estimated from the SBH lowering is in good agreement with that of theoretical calculation of Si self-interstitial. Thus, the defect is concluded to be the Si self-interstitial, which is distributed to more than 10 Å depth from the interface.     

Elastic and Thermophysical Properties of Poly(Vinyl Chloride) and Chlorinated Polyethylene Blends

The results of experimental and theoretical investigations of elastic and thermophysical properties of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) and chlorinated polyethylene (CPE) blends are presented. Eight types of specimens with different ratios of weight contents of PVC and CPE (PVC/CPE = 100/0, 90/10, 80/20, 60/40, 40/60, 20/80, 10/90, and 0/100) were tested. The effect of blend composition on the elastic constants (tensile and shear modulus) is discussed. The data on the thermal conductivity, thermal diffusivity, and heat capacity of the blends investigated are also presented.     

离心泵快速启动过程外部特性的试验研究

介绍离心泵快速启动试验装置和试验方法,对一台出口直径为80 mm的小型管道离心泵进行试验研究,分别测试了试验泵的稳态性能和各项瞬态性能,比较分析了两者的区别。结果显示,启动过程中,离心泵的扬程紧跟转速到达最大值,转速稳定后的瞬态性能与稳态假设对应,流量和扬程的上升历程与管路阻力特性直接相关,而转速与其基本无关; 在启动初始阶段,无量纲扬程呈现很大值,继而迅速减小到低于稳态假设值,表现出明显的瞬态效应。     

Assessment of thermal expansion coefficient of methylsilsesquioxane thin film

For the methylsilsesquioxane film whose optical birefringence is almost zero, it was recently reported that its vertical thermal expansion coefficient (CTE) was approximately one order of magnitude larger than the lateral CTE. Though the birefringence is not an absolute predictor of anisotropic behavior, the discrepancy in both the CTEs was so remarkable that it was essential to investigate whether the anisotropy was intrinsic property or not. If the effect of Poisson's ratio is considered in the calculation of the vertical CTE and when elastic modulus measured by surface acoustic wave spectroscopy is used in the assessment of the lateral CTE, both the CTEs are coincident with each other. Therefore, it can be concluded that the discrepancy in the CTEs can be attributed to a higher in‐plane polymer chain orientation but it can also arise from the misleadingly assumed modulus and Poisson's ratio. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The transition of spontaneous polymerization of acrylamide to “explosive” regime

Experimental results related to the transition of spontaneous polymerization of acrylamide complexes with metal nitrates to the “explosive” regime at room temperature are presented. Alloy formation in mechanically activated mixtures

The physical mixtures of hydroxocarbonates of Cu and Ni with aluminium were activated using a laboratory planetary mill. The chemical reactions and alloy formations as the effects of grinding were followed by the phase analysis of solid products based on the thermogravimetry and X-ray diffractometry. Experimental evidence indicates that the nature of reactions and products of mechanical activation was dependent on the amount of aluminium and time of grinding.
