从对称性的角度,分析了光波在无限大均匀介质中、两种媒质的分界面上传播必须遵从的时间和空间平移不变性,推导出光的直线传播、反射以及折射定律,揭示了支配几何光学三定律的更为深刻而底层的对称性原因,这种视角对于光学部分的教学将产生深刻的影响.     

On the elimination of DC in reconstructed wavefronts from in-line holograms

New experimental results to demonstrate that the annoying DC in the reconstructed wavefronts from in-line holograms could be successfully eliminated are presented in this paper. The complete elimination of DC has been achieved by making proper use of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer. The results for an in-line hololens and an in-line Fourier transform hologram are discussed. Positive ion speed at the plasma–sheath boundary of a negative ion-emitting electrode

One-dimensional fluid model for a planar sheath in front of a negative ion-emitting electrode surface immersed in a collision-less, non-magnetized, electronegative plasma is presented. It was found that the positive ion speed at the plasma–sheath boundary (PSB) increases linearly with negative ion emission from the electrode but attains a saturation value as soon as a virtual cathode is formed near the electrode surface. The effect of negative ion emission on the pre-sheath region shows that the potential drop increases across the pre-sheath in accordance with the rise in positive ion speed at the PSB. The sheath width obtained using the present model shows a similar trend as the Child-Langmuir law, but its magnitude is found to be consistently higher compared with a non-emitting electrode. A plausible explanation has been given to explain these effects.

On the negative squares of indefinite Sturm-Liouville operators

The number of negative squares of all self-adjoint extensions of a simple symmetric operator of defect one with finitely many negative squares in a Krein space is characterized in terms of the behaviour of an abstract Titchmarsh-Weyl function near 0 and ∞. These results are applied to a large class of symmetric and self-adjoint indefinite Sturm-Liouville operators with indefinite weight functions.     

Analysis and computation of least‐squares methods for a compressible Stokes problem

We develop and analyze a negative norm least‐squares method for the compressible Stokes equations with an inflow boundary condition. Least‐squares principles are derived for a first‐order form of the equations obtained by using ω = ?×u and φ = ? · u as new dependent variables. The resulting problem is incompletely elliptic, i.e., it combines features of elliptic and hyperbolic equations. As a result, well‐posedness of least‐squares functionals cannot be established using the ADN elliptic theory and so we use direct approaches to prove their norm‐equivalence. Optical guiding of laser beam in nonuniform plasma

A plasma channel produced by a short ionising laser pulse is axially nonuniform resulting from the self-defocusing. Through such preformed plasma channel, when a delayed pulse propagates, the phenomena of diffraction, refraction and self-phase modulation come into play. We have solved the nonlinear parabolic partial differential equation governing the propagation characteristics for an approximate analytical solution using variational approach. Results are compared with the theoretical model of Liu and Tripathi (Phys. Plasmas 1, 3100 (1994)) based on paraxial ray approximation. Particular emphasis is on both beam width and longitudinal phase delay which are crucial to many applications.     

The third-order optical nonlinearity of The pyrochlore phase 0.7Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3–0.3PbTiO3 thin film on quartz

The xPb(Mg_1/3Nb_2/3)O₃–(1−x)PbTiO₃ (PMNT) (with x=0.7) thin film is prepared on quartz substrates prepared using a sol–gel process. The PMNT thin film has a well-crystallized pyrochlore phase structure. The sign and magnitude of both real and imaginary parts of third-order nonlinear susceptibility χ⁽³⁾ of the thin film have been determined by the Z-scan technique performed at 800 nm with a femtosecond laser. The nonlinear refraction index coefficient γ, the nonlinear absorption coefficient β of the thin film are 1.37×10⁻¹² cm²/W and −6.73×10⁻⁸ m/W, respectively. The real and imaginary part of the third-order nonlinear susceptibility of the film are 1.06×10⁻¹⁷ and −1.65×10⁻¹⁹ m²/V², respectively. The results suggested that the nonlinearity is dominated by the refractive for the film.
