Recent years have seen considerable research success in the field of dynamic homogenization which seeks to define frequency dependent effective properties for heterogeneous composites for the purpose of studying wave propagation. There is an approximation involved in replacing a heterogeneous composite with its homogenized equivalent. In this paper we propose a quantification to this approximation. We study the problem of reflection at the interface of a layered periodic composite and its dynamic homogenized equivalent. It is shown that if the homogenized parameters are to appropriately represent the layered composite in a finite setting and at a given frequency, then reflection at this special interface must be close to zero at that frequency. We show that a comprehensive homogenization scheme proposed in an earlier paper results in negligible reflection in the low frequency regime, thereby suggesting its applicability in a finite composite setting. In this paper we explicitly study a 2-phase composite and a 3-phase composite which exhibits negative effective properties over its second branch. We show that based upon the reflected energy profile of the two cases, there exist good arguments for considering the second branch of a 3-phase composite a true negative branch with negative group velocity. Through arguments of calculated reflected energy we note that infinite-domain homogenization is much more applicable to finite cases of the 3-phase composite than it is to the 2-phase composite. In fact, the applicability of dynamic homogenization extends to most of the first branch (negligible reflection) for the 3-phase composite. This is in contrast with a periodic composite without local resonance where the approximation of homogenization worsens with increasing frequency over the first branch and is demonstrably bad on the second branch. We also study the effect of the interface location on the applicability of homogenization. The results open intriguing questions regarding the effects of replacing a semi-infinite periodic composite with its Bloch-wave (infinite domain) dynamic properties on such phenomenon as negative refraction.  相似文献

In the present paper, we investigate the asymptotic behavior of the solution of a variational inequality with one-sided constraints on ?-periodically located subsets G ε belonging to the boundary ?Ω of the domain Ω ? ?3. We construct a limit (homogenized) problem and prove the strong (in H 1(Ω)) convergence of the solutions of the original inequality to the solution the limit nonlinear boundary-value problem as ? → 0 in the so-called critical case.  相似文献

We extend and complete some quite recent results by Nguetseng [Ngu1] and Allaire [All3] concerning two-scale convergence. In particular, a compactness result for a certain class of parameterdependent functions is proved and applied to perform an alternative homogenization procedure for linear parabolic equations with coefficients oscillating in both their space and time variables. For different speeds of oscillation in the time variable, this results in three cases. In the present work, we study the overall behavior of a microfractured elastic body within the configurational mechanics framework. Micro and macro scales are considered and scale changes are carried out by asymptotic developments homogenization. The homogenized equations of material momentum and scalar moment of material momentum are obtained. In these equations the microcrack length appears as an internal variable, describing the damage evolution. Both quasistatic and dynamic formulations are presented.  相似文献

The paper is devoted to study of acoustic wave propagation in a partially consolidated composite material containing loose particles. Friction of particles against the consolidated part of the material causes mechanical energy dissipation. This situation is modelled by assuming that the medium has a periodic microstructure changing rapidly on the small scale ε. Each of the periodic microscopic cells is composed of a viscoelastic matrix containing a rigid particle in frictional contact with the matrix. We use the methods of two‐scale convergence to obtain effective acoustic equations for the homogenized material. In this work, we consider a heat transfer problem between two periodic connected media exchanging a heat flux throughout their common interface. The interfacial exchange coefficient λ is assumed to tend to zero or to infinity following a rate λ=λ(ε) when the size εof the basic cell tends to zero. The problem of the macroscopic simulation of the motion of a viscous fluid and mass transport in a porous medium is considered under the assumption that the mass transport can locally be described by the Fick relaxation law. Several cases determined by the local inertia number of the mass flow and the Péclet number are investigated. We consider the class of diffusions on fractals first constructed in [12] on the Sierpinski and abc gaskets. We give an alternative construction of the diffusion process using Dirichlet forms and extend the class of fractals considered to some nested fractals. We use the Dirichlet form to deduce Nash inequalities which give upper bounds on the short and long time behaviour of the transition density of the diffusion process. For short times, even though the diffusion lives mainly on a lower dimensional subset of the fractal, the heat flows slowly. For the long time scales the diffusion has a homogenization property in that rescalings converge to the Brownian motion on the fractal.  相似文献

We prove a general convergence result for singular perturbations with an arbitrary number of scales of fully nonlinear degenerate parabolic PDEs. As a special case we cover the iterated homogenization for such equations with oscillating initial data. Explicit examples, among others, are the two-scale homogenization of quasilinear equations driven by a general hypoelliptic operator and the n-scale homogenization of uniformly parabolic fully nonlinear PDEs.  相似文献
