Safe bounds in linear and mixed-integer linear programming

Current mixed-integer linear programming solvers are based on linear programming routines that use floating-point arithmetic. Occasionally, this leads to wrong solutions, even for problems where all coefficients and all solution components are small integers. An example is given where many state-of-the-art MILP solvers fail. It is then shown how, using directed rounding and interval arithmetic, cheap pre- and postprocessing of the linear programs arising in a branch-and-cut framework can guarantee that no solution is lost, at least for mixed-integer programs in which all variables can be bounded rigorously by bounds of reasonable size. On the Existence of Solutions of Quasivariational Inclusion Problems

Quasivariational inclusion problems are formulated and sufficient conditions on the existence of solutions are shown. As special cases, we obtain several results on the existence of solutions of general vector ideal, proper, Pareto, weak quasioptimization problems, quasivariational inequalities, and vector quasiequilibrium problems. Further, we prove theorems on the existence for solutions of systems of these inclusions. As a corollary, we obtain an ideal minimax theorem concerning vector functions.     

Upper and lower bounds for the fixed spectrum frequency assignment problem

A survey of the results described in the authors PhD thesis (Montemanni 2001) is presented. The thesis, which was supervised by Prof. Derek H. Smith and Dr. Stuart M. Allen, has been defended in January 2002 at the University of Glamorgan (U.K.). External Fields, Density Functionals, and the Gibbs Inequality

By combining the upper and lower bounds to the free energy as given by the Gibbs inequality for two systems with the same intermolecular interactions but with external fields differing from each other only in a finite region of space , we show that the corresponding equilibrium densities must also differ from each other somewhere in . We note that the basic equations of density functional theory arise naturally from a simple rearrangement and reinterpretation of the terms in the upper bound Gibbs inequality for such systems and briefly discuss some of the complications that occur when the intermolecular interactions of the two systems also differ.     

The blow-up rates for systems of heat equations with nonlinear boundary conditions

This paper deals with the blow-up rate estimates of positive solutions for systems of heat equations with nonlinear boundary conditions. The upper and lower bounds of blow-up rate are obtained.     

SOME NEW RESULTS FOR NONLINEAR BOUNDARY VALUE PROBLEMS OF MIXED TYPE INTEGRODIFFERENTIAL EQUATION

In this paper we give the existence and uniqueness of solutions for boundary value problems of the form u" = f(t, u,u', T1u,T2u), g(u(0),u(1)) = 0, h(w(0), u(1),u'(0), u'(1)) = 0 by means of the upper and lower solution method.     

On Vector Quasi-Equilibrium Problems with Set-Valued Maps

In this paper, we introduce a new class of vector quasi-equilibrium problems with set-valued maps. Almost all the vector equilibrium models of the Blum-Oettli type in the literature are special cases of our new class of equilibrium problems under consideration. Moreover, a number of C-diagonal quasiconvexity properties are proposed for set-valued maps, which are natural generalizations of the -diagonal quasiconvexity for real functions. Together with an application of continuous selection and fixed-point theorems, these conditions enable us to prove unified existence results of solutions for such vector equilibrium problems.     

On Lower Bounds for Lp Norms in the Central Limit Theorem for Independent and m-Dependent Random Variables

We derive lower bounds for L_p norms , in the central limit theorem for independent and m–dependent random variables with finite fifth order absolute moments and for independent and m–dependent identically distributed random variables with fourth order moments.
