Reservoirs are often composed of an assortment of rock types giving rise to permeability heterogeneities at a variety of length-scales. To predict fluid flow at the full-field scale, it is necessary to be aware of these different types of heterogeneity, to recognise which are likely to have important effects on fluid flow, and to capture them by upscaling. In fact, we may require a series of stages of upscaling to go from small-scales (mm or cm) to a full-field model. When there are two (or more) phases present, we also need to know how these heterogeneities interact with fluid forces (capillary, viscous and gravity). We discuss how these effects may be taken into account by upscaling. This study focusses on the effects of steady-state upscaling for viscous-dominated floods and tests carried out on a range of 2D models are described. Upscaling errors are shown to be reduced slightly by the increase in numerical dispersion at the coarse scale. We select a combination of three different upscaling methods, and apply this approach to a model of a North Sea oil reservoir in a deep marine environment. Six different genetic units (rock types) were identified, including channel sandstone and inter-bedded sandstone and mudstone. These units were modelled using different approaches, depending on the nature of the heterogeneities. Our results show that the importance of small-scale heterogeneity depends on the large-scale distribution of the rock types. Upscaling may not be worthwhile in sparsely distributed genetic units. However, it is important in the dominant rock type, especially if there is good connectivity through the unit between the injector wells (or aquifer) and the producer wells.This revised version was published online in May 2005. In a previous paper, the dynamic behaviour of a Jeffcott rotor was studied in the presence of pure static unbalance and nonlinear elastic restoring forces. The present paper extends the analysis to a rigid rotor with an axial length such as to make the transverse moment of inertia greater than the axial one. As in the previous investigation, the elastic restoring forces are assumed to be nonlinear and the effects of couple unbalance are also included but, unlike the Jeffcott rotor, the system exhibits six degrees-of-freedom. The Lagrangian coordinates were fixed so as to coincide with the three coordinates of the centre of mass of the rotor and the three angular coordinates needed in order to express the rotor's rotations with respect to a reference frame having its origin in the centre of mass. The precession motions of such a rotor turn out to be cylindrical at low angular speeds and exhibit a conical aspect when operating at higher speeds. The motion equations of the rotor were written with reference to a system that was subsequently adopted for the experimental analysis. The particular feature of this system was the use of a steel wire (piano wire) for the rotor shaft, suitably constrained and with the possibility of regulating the tension of the wire itself, in order to increase or reduce the nonlinear character of the system. The numerical analysis performed with integration of the motion equations made it possible to point out that chaotic solutions were manifested only when the tension in the wire was given the lowest values – i.e. when the system was strongly nonlinear – in the presence of considerable damping and rotor unbalance values that were so high as to lose any practical significance. Under conditions commonly shared by analogous real systems characterised by poor damping, where the contribution to nonlinearity is almost entirely due to elastic restoring forces, the analysis pointed out that precession motions may be manifested with a periodic character, whether synchronous or not, or a quasi-periodic character, but in no case is the solution chaotic. 相似文献

The material forces concept has become an elegant tool in continuum mechanics for the calculation of the thermodynamic driving
force of a defect. Based on this concept, we have recently shown that inhomogeneities essentially shield or anti-shield crack
tips from applied far-field stresses. The goal of this paper is to illustrate this by considering the model example of a crack
in a CT-type specimen that contains a bimaterial interface. The crack driving force is calculated as the sum of the far-field

In this paper we are interested in the Quartapelle–Napolitano approach to calculation of forces in viscous incompressible flows in exterior domains. We study the possibility of deriving a simpler formulation of this approach which might lead to a more convenient expression for the hydrodynamic force, but conclude that such a simplification is, within the family of approaches considered, impossible. The theory of gradient elasticity is applied to line forces. Line forces acting on a point within the body and a concentrated normal force (Flamant problem) which acts on a half plane are studied. Closed analytical solutions which have a simple form are obtained for displacement fields of these forces. The dynamical viscoelasticity of ABS melts with different particle size was investigated at various levels of rubbery phase contents. The effects of the rubber are more pronounced in the terminal zone: a transition from viscoelastic liquid to viscoelastic solid behavior was observed which can be interpreted as a physical gelation occurring at a critical rubbery phase content. This critical content resulted in being smaller in the case of smaller particles. A quantitative explanation of the experimental findings was proposed in terms of the average interparticle distance and overlapping of the chains grafted onto the neighboring rubber particles.
