We investigate the influence of slip boundary conditions on the onset of Bénard convection in an infinite fluid layer. It is shown that the critical Rayleigh number is a decreasing function of the slip length, and therefore boundary slip is seen to have a destabilizing effect. The occurrence of time-dependent cavitation and tensile stress in an oscillatory oil squeeze film were investigated experimentally. The test apparatus was a simple thrust bearing consisting of two parallel circular plates separated by a thin viscous oil film. During the test, one plate was at rest while the other (transparent) oscillated in a direction normal to its surface. This test configuration was chosen to avoid the rotational motion and complicated geometry of a squeeze film journal bearing. The frequency of oscillation was in the range of 5 to 50 Hz and was controlled by an electro-magnetic exciter. The process of cavity formation and its subsequent development was recorded by a high-speed video camera. Concomitant pressure in the oil film was measured both within and without the cavitation region. It was found that both tensile stress and cavities existed in a squeeze film under certain working conditions. 相似文献

Relative permeability functions for immiscible displacements in porous media show a wide range of profiles. Although, this
behavior is well known, its impact on the stability of the displacement process is unexplored. Our analysis clearly demonstrates
for the first time that the viscous instability characteristics of two-phase flows are governed not only by their end point
values, but are strongly dependent on the actual profile of relative permeability functions. Linear stability analysis predicts
the capacity of the flow to develop large scale fingers which can result in substantial bypassing of the resident fluid. It
is observed that relative permeability functions attributed to drainage processes yield a more unstable displacement as compared
to functions related to imbibition processes. Moreover, instability is observed to increase for those relative permeability
functions which result from increased wettability of the wetting fluid. High accuracy numerical simulations show agreement
with these predictions and demonstrate how large amplitude viscous fingers result in significant bypassing for certain relative
permeability functions. In the nonlinear regime, the finger amplitude grows at a rate ∝ t1/2 initially, drops to t1/4 at a later time and finally grows ∝ t. The basic mechanisms of finger interaction, however, are not substantially influenced by relative permeability functions. 相似文献

A method is developed for performing a local reduction of the governing physics for fluid problems with domains that contain a combination of narrow and non‐narrow regions, and the computational accuracy and performance of the method are measured. In the narrow regions of the domain, where the fluid is assumed to have no inertia and the domain height and curvature are assumed small, lubrication, or Reynolds, theory is used locally to reduce the two‐dimensional Navier–Stokes equations to the one‐dimensional Reynolds equation while retaining a high degree of accuracy in the overall solution. The Reynolds equation is coupled to the governing momentum and mass equations of the non‐narrow region with boundary conditions on the mass and momentum flux. The localized reduction technique, termed ‘stitching,’ is demonstrated on Stokes flow for various geometries of the hydrodynamic journal bearing—a non‐trivial test problem for which a known analytical solution is available. The computational advantage of the coupled Stokes–Reynolds method is illustrated on an industrially applicable fully‐flooded deformable‐roll coating example. The examples in this paper are limited to two‐dimensional Stokes flow, but extension to three‐dimensional and Navier–Stokes flow is possible. Copyright © 2003 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. 相似文献
