Maximum Norm Resolvent Estimates for Elliptic Finite Element Operators

We study a finite element approximation A _h, based on simplicial Lagrange elements, of a second order elliptic operator A under homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions in two and three dimensions, where h is thought of as a meshsize. The main result of the paper is a new resolvent estimate for the operator A _h in the L -norm. This estimate is uniform with respect to h for the case with at least quadratic elements. In the case with linear elements, the estimate contains on the right a factor proportional to (log log ), where = 1 or = in two or three dimensions, respectively.This revised version was published online in October 2005 with corrections to the Cover Date.     

Dynamic Global Constraints in Backtracking Based Environments

Global constraints provide strong filtering algorithms to reduce the search space when solving large combinatorial problems. In this paper we propose to make the global constraints dynamic, i.e., to allow extending the set of constrained variables during search. We describe a generic dynamisation technique for an arbitrary monotonic global constraint and we compare it with the semantic-based dynamisation for the alldifferent constraint. At the end we sketch a dynamisation technique for non-monotonic global constraints. A comparison with existing methods to model dynamic problems is given as well.

An approximation problem of the finite rank operator in Banach spaces

By the method of geometry of Banach spaces, we have proven that a bounded linear operator in Banach space is a compact linear one iff it can be uniformly approximated by a sequence of the finite rank bounded homogeneous operators, which reveals the essence of the counter example given by Enflo.     

On the Efficiency of a Global Non-differentiable Optimization Algorithm Based on the Method of Optimal Set Partitioning

The examined algorithm for global optimization of the multiextremal non-differentiable function is based on the following idea: the problem of determination of the global minimum point of the function f(x) on the set (f(x) has a finite number of local minima in this domain) is reduced to the problem of finding all local minima and their attraction spheres with a consequent choice of the global minimum point among them. This reduction is made by application of the optimal set partitioning method. The proposed algorithm is evaluated on a set of well-known one-dimensional, two-dimensional and three-dimensional test functions. Recommendations for choosing the algorithm parameters are given.     

Characterization of the classical domains by Carathèodory volume elements and Eisenman-Kobayashi volume elements

We give a sufficient and necessary condition that a domain is biholomorphic to the classical domain.     

Orthocomplete effect algebras

We prove that for every orthocomplete effect algebra the center of forms a complete Boolean algebra. As a consequence, every orthocomplete atomic effect algebra is a direct product of irreducible ones.

In this paper, we discuss the problem of quasi-valuation ring presented in the reference “Wang Shianghaw, On quasi-valuation ring, Northeast People‘s Univ. Natur. Sci. J., (1)(1957), 27-40”,when the quotient field of R is an algebraic number field or an algebraic function field, and we obtain a characterization of quasi-valuation rings.     

The Structure of the (Outer) Automorphism Group of a Bieberbach Group

Referring to Tits alternative, we develop a necessary and sufficient condition to decide whether the normalizer of a finite group of integral matrices is polycyclic-by-finite or is containing a non-Abelian free group. This result is of fundamental importance to conclude whether the (outer) automorphism group of a Bieberbach group is polycyclic-by-finite or has a non-cyclic free subgroup.     

Some Notes on Reaction Diffusion Systems with Nonlinear Boundary Conditions

This paper deals with the existence and nonexistence of global positive solution to a semilinear reaction-diffusion system with nonlinear boundary conditions.For the heat diffusion case,the necessary and sufficient conditions on the global existence of all positive solutions are obtained.For the general fast diffusion case,we get some conditions on the global existence and nonexistence of positive solutions.The results of this paper fill the some gaps which were left in this field.
