Flexoelectric-induced voltage shift in a weak anchoring hybrid aligned nematic liquid crystal cell is investigated theoretically. Based on the elastic theory of liquid crystal and the variation method, the equations for the bulk and the boundary of the cell are derived. By computer simulation, the dependence of the
shift voltage on the sum of the flexoelectric coefficients and the anchoring energy strength is obtained. As a result, a novel method to determine the sum of the flexoelectric coefficients by measuring the shift voltage is put forward.  相似文献

Second-harmonic generation (SHG) in the nematic phase of bent-core oxadiazole-based liquid crystals (LCs) was studied and compared to that for the rod-like compound 4-cyano-4?-n-octylbiphenyl (8CB). Weak, isotropically scattered second-harmonic (SH) light was observed for all materials, consistent with SHG by nematic director fluctuations. The SH intensity produced by the bent-core materials was found to be up to ~ 3.4 times that of 8CB. We discuss this result in terms of the dependence of SH intensity on temperature, elastic constants and flexoelectric coefficients. We have calculated the latter by using a molecular field approach with atomistic modelling, thus demonstrating how molecular parameters contribute to the flexoelectric coefficients and illustrating the potential of this method for predicting the flexoelectric behaviour of bent-core LCs. We show that the increased SH signal in the bent-core compounds is partly due to their nematic phases being at a much higher temperature, and also potentially due to them having greater flexoelectric coefficients, up to ~1.5 times those of 8CB. These estimates are consistent with reports of increased flexoelectric coefficients in bent-core compounds in comparison to rod-like compounds.  相似文献

Based on the Hamiltonian variational principle, the 2D field equations and boundary conditions for flexoelectricity were derived, and the corresponding governing equations were obtained through substitution of the constitutive relation and geometric equations into the field equation. The in⁃plane tensile deformation, thick⁃ ness⁃stretch deformation, symmetric thickness⁃shear deformation, and their coupled flexoelectric polarization of flexoelectric nanoplates caused by inhomogeneous temperature changes, were studied. The displacement fields and electric potential fields were solved with the double Fourier series method. The results demonstrate that, all fields are sensitive to the temperature load, which raises the prospect of controlling the mechanical and electrical behaviors of flexoelectric nanoplates by means of the temperature field. The effects of the thermal field and mechanical field on the displacement field were compared and examined. The work extends the Mind⁃ lin⁃Medick plate structure analysis theory in view of the flexoelectric and temperature effects, and provides a reference for the structural design of micro⁃ and nano⁃scale devices. © 2023 Editorial Office of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics. 理论分析和数值模拟相结合,研究了表面序电极化、挠曲电极化对非对称弱锚定向列液晶盒在饱和点双稳态的影响,得到了两种极化共存时液晶指向矢满足的方程和边界条件.通过引入新的状态参量,从能量的角度对两种极化的物理效应进行了分析.结果表明,在一定条件下,两种极化耦合,在饱和点通过改变锚定能影响边界条件,从而诱导双稳态.文中给出了判断是否存在双稳态的一般条件,此条件与数值计算结果符合. 关键词: 表面序电极化 挠曲电极化 饱和点 双稳态  相似文献

Unique 2H-NMR spectral patterns can be obtained from biaxially ordered smectic E and G phases, where only one director of the phase is aligned by the magnetic field. Two effects on the shape of the deuterium spectral pattern are demonstrated: (1) The effect of a motionally induced asymmetry parameter in the time averaged deuterium quadrupole interaction, and (2) the effect when the principal z-axis of the time averaged interaction is not parallel to the aligned director. Spectral patterns for the SG phase of the compound 4-n-pentoxybenzylidene-4-n'-heptylaniline selectively deuterated on one of the aromatic rings (50.7-d 4) were obtained for both unaligned and magneto-aligned samples. Both of these spectral patterns were consistent with that expected for an asymmetry parameter, n < 0.2. Spectral patterns in the SG phase of the compound 50.6 (24.7 wt.%) + 90.4-αd 2d 2 (75.3 wt.%) were studied showing a different behavior with respect to the spectral patterns obtained in 50.7. We believe that a shift in the orientation of the z principal axis relative to the sample c axis has occurred in this SG phase. Spectral patterns were also recorded for the SE phase in magneto-aligned samples of the mixture of compounds 4-cyano-4'-octyloxybiphenyl (80CB) with 50 wt.% 40.8-d 4. These data also show a small asymmetry parameter but, in addition, a distribution in the orientation of the principal z-axis indicating that the time scale of the motion of the long molecular axis is in a regime where it is of the order of the 2H-NMR measurement. Models for the smectic E and G phases based on these observations are discussed.  相似文献

Abstract

We report experimental and theoretical results on the flexoelectric instability and crossover between flexoelectric domains and electroconvection in a hybrid aligned nematic MBBA under d.c. voltage. At threshold a spatially periodic flexoelectric deformation in the form of longitudinal domains (along the planar director) was observed. With increasing voltage the director deviation out of the initial plane becomes clearly detectable. Observations of tracers show that hydrodynamic flow develops inside the flexoelectric stripe pattern in the form of circular orbits perpendicular to the domain stripes. With further increasing d.c. voltage electroconvection sets in in the form of drifting oblique rolls inside the flexoelectric domains.  相似文献

We report the synthesis and liquid crystalline behaviour of two series of para-substituted terphenyls as dopants with a rigid rod-like shape, rather than a wedge-, pear- or banana-shape, for guest–host nematic mixtures with flexoelectric properties. One series of liquid crystalline dopants is of low-to-strongly negative dielectric anisotropy and the other is of low-to-strongly positive dielectric anisotropy. The usefulness of apolar and polar rod-like dopants as components of flexoelectric nematic mixtures of positive dielectric anisotropy for use in LCDs is investigated in general and the dependence of the flexoelectric properties of the doped nematic mixtures on the polarity of the dopants is studied in particular. The correlation between the concentration of the dopant and the magnitude of the flexoelastic ratio of several guest–host nematic mixtures is investigated.  相似文献

The synthesis is reported of new meta‐substituted quaterphenyls and several related dimers as dopants for nematic mixtures with flexoelectric properties. The number and nature of the terminal substituents is varied from apolar with a small dipole moment to polar with a strong dipole moment. The number of methylene units in the flexible aliphatic spacer between the polyfluorinated aromatic groups of the dimers is also varied. Dimers capable of banana‐shaped conformers induce an increase in the flexoelectric coefficients of mixtures containing them and reduce the clearing point to a small extent.  相似文献

In comparison with the first-principles calculations mostly using partial differential equations (PDEs), numerical simulations with modeling by ordinary differential equations (ODEs) are sometimes superior in that they are computationally more economical and that important factors are more easily traced. However, a demerit of ODE modeling is the need of model validation through comparison with experimental data or results of the first-principles calculations. In the present review, examples of ODE modeling are reviewed such as sonochemical reactions inside a cavitation bubble, oriented attachment of nanocrystals, dynamic response of flexoelectric polarization, ultrasound-assisted sintering, and dynamics of a gas parcel in a thermoacoustic engine.  相似文献
