Analysis and finite element simulations of a second‐order fluid model in a bounded domain

This article is concerned with the equations governing the steady motion of a viscoelastic incompressible second‐order fluid in a bounded domain. A new proof of existence and uniqueness of strong solutions is given. In addition, using appropriate finite element methods to approximate a coupled equivalent problem, sharp error estimates are obtained using a fixed point argument. The method is applied to the two‐dimensional lid‐driven cavity problem, at low Reynolds number and in a certain range of values of the viscoelastic parameters, to analyze the combined effects of inertia and viscoelasticity on the flow. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. On a certain two-sided symmetric condition in magnetic field analysis and computations

A special two-sided condition for the incremental magnetic reluctivity is introduced which guarantees the unique existence of both the weak and the approximate solutions of the nonlinear stationary magnetic field distributed on a region composed of different media, as well as a certain estimate of the error between the two solutions. The condition, being discussed from the physical as well as the mathematical point of view, can be easily verified and is fulfilled for various magnetic reluctivity models used in electrotechnical practice.

Partition Lattice q-Analogs Related to q-Stirling Numbers

We construct a family of partially ordered sets (posets) that are q-analogs of the set partition lattice. They are different from the q-analogs proposed by Dowling [5]. One of the important features of these posets is that their Whitney numbers of the first and second kind are just the q-Stirling numbers of the first and second kind, respectively. One member of this family [4] can be constructed using an interpretation of Milne [9] for S[n, k] as sequences of lines in a vector space over the Galois field F _q. Another member is constructed so as to mirror the partial order in the subspace lattice.     

ICTS measurements for p-GaN Schottky contacts

High-temperature isothermal capacitance transient spectroscopy (H-ICTS) measurements were conducted to characterize near mid-gap defects, which are the origin of the memory effect in Ni/p-GaN Schottky contacts. A large single peak was detected only under the forward bias conditions. This indicates that the defects were located in the vicinity of the interface. The change of the peak height and position of the ICTS curves under various bias conditions were qualitatively interpreted by the distribution of the defects and the current flow effect.     

A CLASS OF NEW NONCONFORMING FINITE ELEMENTS

A class of new nine-parameter nonconforming finite elements with convergent prop-erties are constructed in terms of the approach of interpolation methods in this paper. All of those finite elements can be viewed as the generalization of Zienkiewicz's finite element by dis-lurbing its parameters.     

The growth of Pd thin films on a 6H-SiC(0 0 0 1) substrate

Pd thin films, grown on Si-rich 6H-SiC(0 0 0 1) substrates, were studied by atomic force microscopy, electron diffraction and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. It is concluded that the growth is successful only when all the growth process takes place at room temperature. Under these conditions a very good epitaxial growth of Pd is achieved, despite the large misfit (about 8.6%) between Pd and the substrate and the existence of a semi-amorphous layer between the thin film and the substrate. A large number of twins appear in these films.
