Some developments in reaction and solution microcalorimetry,with particular reference to its use in biochemistry and cellular biology

The field of isothermal microcalorimetry as applied to systems of interest for aqueous solution chemistry, biochemistry and in cellular biology is briefly reviewed. Some techniques recently developed in the author's laboratory are described.     

Exact solutions for Belousov-Zhabotinskii reaction-diffusion system

Abstract. We consider the following simplified model for the Belousou-Zhabotinskii(B-Z)reaction:     

An Electrostatic Bond Energy Model for Enthalpies of Formation of Chloroalkanes in Gaseous States

An electrostatic bond energy model is formulated to fit the enthalpies of formation and dipole moments of the alkanes and chloroalkanes. In this model, the charge distributions are calculated by an electrostatic approach similar to the "MSE" method, and the enthalpy of formation of a molecule is the sum of the bond energy terms plus the electrostatic energy of the interactions between the charges on all atoms. All parameters of this model are obtained by parameterization. The calculated dipole moments for 13 chloroalkanes and enthalpies of formation for 19 alkanes and non-geminal chloroalkanes agree with the determined values very well. To calculate the enthalpies of formation of geminal chloroalkanes, a correction mainly attributed to the van der Waals interactions in the geminal substituted group, about 24 kJ/mol per pair of geminal chlorine atoms, is introduced.     

Synthesis of derivatives of ketocarboxylic acids by the decomposition of 1,4-cyclohexanedione monoethyleneketal hydroperoxide

The decomposition of 1,4-dihydroxy-1,4-dihydroperoxycyclohexane under the action of FeSO₄ and the decomposition of 1,4-cyclohexanedione monoethyleneketal hydroperoxide under the action of Fe^II salts in the presence of various ligands or under the action of Cu^II sulfate have been studied. A preparative method for the synthesis of derivatives of diketodicarboxylic or -functionally substituted ketocarboxylic acids from 1,4-cyclohexanedione monoethyleneketal has been developed.Translated fromIzvestiya Akademii Nauk. Preparative Separation and Analysis of Complex Mixtures of Leucomycins and Desmycarosyl Leucomycins Using HPLC and Mass Spectrometry

Composition and hydrolysis products of a biotechnical available complex of macrolides were analyzed by HPLC and ESI-CID-MSⁿ. Major components are leucomycin-type antibiotics (leucomycins A₁ (5), A₇ (3), A₉ (2), 9-desoxy-9-oxo-turimycin H₃ (4) and niddamycin B (6). Hydrolysis of the complex mixture yielded 9-, 13-isoforocidins (7, 8, 9, 11) and 9-oxo-forocidin (10). A preparative separation procedure was elaborated furnishing compounds 3 - 11 for semisynthetic experiments.Prof. Dr. Udo Gräfe deceased on 14.2.2003. Fluorinated triazinones from hexafluoroacetone ethoxycarbonylimine

The behavior of hexafluoroacetone ethoxycarbonylimine in cyclocondensation with different binucleophiles of the amidine type, viz., amino derivatives of N- and N,S-heterocycles, was studied. A preparative method for the synthesis of previously unknown annelated 2,2-bis(trifluoromethyl)-1,3,5-triazinones was developed.

THE PARAMETER KERNELS FOR THE LINEAR INVERSION OF THE FREE OSCILLATION OF THE EARTH (Ⅰ)

In the linear inversion of the radial variation of the parameters of the Earth by usingthe observed frequencies of various normal modes of free oscillation of the earth, it is neces-sary to know the values of the kernels of the parameters ρ, μ and λ. This paper describesthe methods of the derivation of the formulas of these kernels. This is the first part of thepaper in which only the toroidal oscillations are considered. They are much simpler thanthose of the spheroidal ones, that we will consider in the second part of the paper. The data of the two types of oscillations are equally important in the solution of theinversion problem, and should be employed simultaneously, and we know that the toroidaloscillations are much simpler than the spheroidal ones, it seems wise to divide the whole programof the inversion problem into steps: first, by employing the toroidal data to correct the twoparameters ρ and μ in the mantle, then by using the spheroidal data to correct the remain-ing parameters, i.e. th     

Excess and partial excess molar volumes of mixing of N,N-dibutyl-2-ethylhexamide with dodecanol

Excess and excess partial molar volumes of mixing of the system N,N-dibutyl-2-ethylhexylamide (DBEHA) + dodecanol (DDA) were determined at 25, 35, 45, 55 and 65°C. The excess molar volumes exhibit a maxima at each temperature at approximatelyx _DBEHA = 0.3 and a minima close tox _DBEHA = 0.9. The values of the excess volumes in general increase with the temperature. The partial excess molar volumes are calculated from the smoothed data and the results are discussed in the light of postulated amide-alcohol interactions.     

New homochiralortho-palladated matrix bearing a bulky substituent at the carbon stereocenter

A new homochiral dimericortho-palladated complex bearing a bulkytert-butyl substituent at the carbon stereocenter was synthesized from optically activeN,N-dimethyl-α-tert-butylbenzylamine. Regioselective activation of only the aromatic C−H bond was shown to occur during the cyclometallation process proceeding under very mild conditions due to steric effects. Spectral characteristics of mononuclear derivatives of the new dimeric complex indicate that the five-membered palladacycle exists predominantly in one of two possible chiral conformations with the axial position of thetert-butyl substituent.
