Modified Equations for Stochastic Differential Equations

We describe a backward error analysis for stochastic differential equations with respect to weak convergence. Modified equations are provided for forward and backward Euler approximations to Itô SDEs with additive noise, and extensions to other types of equation and approximation are discussed.

From gas dynamics to pressureless gas dynamics

This paper is devoted to the convergence of solutions of the compressible Euler equations towards solutions of the pressureless gas dynamics system, when the pressure tends to 0. The goal is to prove accurate uniform bounds for particular solutions of the Euler equations.

     

飞秒激光脉冲在三能级有机分子介质中传播时的频谱分析

通过采用预估校正的时域有限差分法求解麦克斯韦-布洛赫方程,我们研究了飞秒激光脉冲在三能级有机分子(4,4-二甲氨基二苯乙烯分子)介质中传播时脉冲的频谱演化情况.在单光子共振情况下,即入射脉冲频率等于1、2能级之间的共振频率,对大面积入射脉冲,由于强的二次激发的作用,电场频谱中出现了在ω32附近振荡的频率成分,ω32是2、3能级之间的共振频率,说明对大面积入射脉冲二能级模型已经失效,需要采用多能级模型来描述分子介质.在双光子共振情况下,即入射脉冲频率等于1、3能级之间的共振频率的一半,由于介质中放大的自发辐射和四波混频的作用,部分入射脉冲能量转化为高频和低频电场成分的能量,分子介质表现出了很强的光功率限幅特性.

Spline Techniques for Solving Singularly-Perturbed Nonlinear Problems on Nonuniform Grids

A numerical method based on cubic splines with nonuniform grid is given for singularly-perturbed nonlinear two-point boundary-value problems. The original nonlinear equation is linearized using quasilinearization. Difference schemes are derived for the linear case using a variable-mesh cubic spline and are used to solve each linear equation obtained via quasilinearization. Second-order uniform convergence is achieved. Numerical examples are given in support of the theoretical results.     

Linear Volterra Integral Equations

The Kurzweil-Henstock integral formalism is applied to establish the existence of solutions to the linear integral equations of Volterra-typewhere the functions are Banach-space valued. Special theorems on existence of solutions concerning the Lebesgu3 integral setting are obtained. These sharpen earlier results.

We derive hydrodynamic equations describing the evolution of a binary fluid segregated into two regions, each rich in one species,which are separated (on the macroscopic scale) by a sharp interface. Our starting point is a Vlasov-Boltzmann (VB) equation describing the evolution of the one particle position and velocity distributions, f_i (x, v, t), i = 1, 2. The solution of the VB equation is developed in a Hilbert expansion appropriate for this system. This yields incompressible Navier-Stokes equations for the velocity field u and a jump boundary condition for the pressure across the interface. The interface, in turn, moves with a velocity given by the normal component of u.     

40 GHz Mode-Locked Semiconductor Lasers: Theory, Simulations and Experiment

We study both theoretically and experimentally typical operation regimes of 40 GHz monolithic mode-locked lasers. The underlying Traveling Wave Equation model reveals quantitative agreement for characteristics of the fundamental mode-locking as pulse width and repetition frequency tuning, as well as qualitative agreement with the experiments for other dynamic regimes. Especially the appearance of stable harmonic mode-locking at 80 GHz has been predicted theoretically and confirmed by measurements. Furthermore, we derive and apply a simplified Delay-Differential-Equation model which guides us to a qualitative analysis of bifurcations responsible for the appearance and the breakup of different mode-locking regimes. Higher harmonics of mode-locking are predicted by this model as well.     

Nondegeneracy and uniqueness of positive solutions for Robin problem of second order ordinary differential equations and its applications

This article studies positive solutions of Robin problem for semi-linear second order ordinary differential equations. Nondegeneracy and uniqueness results are proven for homogeneous differential equations. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of one or two positive solutions for inhomogeneous differential equations or differential equations with concave-convex nonlinearities are obtained by making use of the nondegeneracy and uniqueness results for positive solutions of homogeneous differential equations.
