Existence and Non-Existence Results for Quasilinear Elliptic Exterior Problems with Nonlinear Boundary Conditions

Existence and non-existence results are established for quasilinear elliptic problems with nonlinear boundary conditions and lack of compactness. The proofs combine variational methods with the geometrical feature, due to the competition between the different growths of the nonlinearities.     

A Class of Operator Equations in Nonlinear Mechanics

A nonlinear evolution equation in Hilbert space is introduced and is shown to govern a broad class of problems of nonlinear solid mechanics. The simplest oscillations of this equation are described by a “generalized Liénard equation.”

Comparison of non‐reflective boundary conditions for a free‐rising turbulent axisymmetric plume

The stability and accuracy of radiation type non‐reflective outflow boundary conditions, as well as the standard Neumann boundary condition with zero normal derivative, have been compared for the numerical simulation of a turbulent axisymmetric plume with Reynolds number of 7700 and Prandtl number of 0.71. Comparison of the performance of the boundary conditions with respect to each other, and to the results obtained for an extended domain, shows that a one‐dimensional scheme in which advection and diffusion terms are included in the radiation equation is the optimum approach for the plume simulation. Formulation of commons dilemma: Dawes model reconsidered

This paper examines Dawes (1975) model on commons dilemma (CD) situation and proposes an alternative model which formulates CD. Firstly, it makes clear that Dawes model does not have the characteristics of CD. Secondly, it specifies “resource unit condition” which models of commons dilemma must satisfy. Thirdly, it presents CD model, which is obtained by setting the condition in Dawes model. And lastly, it examines some nature of the proposed model and find that in CD situation, fine is distributed proportionally to each player's property.     

Asymptotics for eigenelements of Laplacian in domain with oscillating boundary: multiple eigenvalues

We study the asymptotic behavior of the solutions of a spectral problem for the Laplacian in a domain with rapidly oscillating boundary. We consider the case where the eigenvalue of the limit problem is multiple. We construct the leading terms of the asymptotic expansions for the eigenelements and verify the asymptotics.     

Minimum Weight Design for Structural Eigenvalue Problems by Optimal Control Theory*, †

The application of optimal control theory to minimum weight design of continuous one-dimensional structural elements subject to eigenvalue constraints is discussed. If not only the value of an eigenvalue is prescribed but also its position in the sequence of the ordered eigenvalues—for example, the critical buckling load of a column—the corresponding optimal control problem is shown to include necessarily all eigenvalues. Considering the unspecified eigenvalues as free parameters, necessary conditions for minimum weight design are derived. These conditions are compared with those obtained by use of variational methods. Attention is focused on the special case of multimodal solutions.     

Existence and multiplicity of solutions for asymptotically linear noncooperative elliptic systems

Using the minimax methods in critical point theory and a generalized Landesman-Lazer type condition, we establish two existence results of solutions for asymptotically linear noncooperative elliptic systems at resonance. Besides this, we obtain two solutions in the case of near resonance.     

ELASTIC CALCULATION OF STRESSES IN RINGS USING AIRY STRESS FUNCTION

Stress calculation formulae for a ring have been obtained by using Airy stress function of the plane strain field with the decomposition of the solutions for normal stresses of Airy biharmonic equation into two parts when it is loaded under two opposite inside forces along a diameter. One part should fulfill a constraint condition about normal stress distribution along the circumference at an energy valley to do the minimum work. Other part is a stress residue constant. In order to verify these formulae and the computed results, the computed contour lines of equi-maximal shear stresses were plotted and quite compared with that of photo-elasticity test results. This constraint condition about normal stress distribution along circumference is confirmed by using Greens’ theorem. An additional compression exists along the circumference of the loaded ring, explaining the divorcement and displacement of singularity points at inner and outer boundaries.     

Variable viscosity effects on the peristaltic motion of a third‐order fluid

The effect of variable viscosity on the peristaltic motion of MHD third‐order fluid in a channel is studied using slip condition. The series solution for stream function, longitudinal velocity and pressure gradient are first derived and then discussed in detail.
