New liquid‐crystal alignment agents based on fluorinated polyimides with trifluoromethyl‐substituted benzene or diphenylether in the side chain

Fluorinated copolyimides derived from 4,4′‐oxydiphthalic anhydride (ODPA) with 4,4′‐oxydianline (ODA) and trifluoromethyl‐containing aromatic diamines have been synthesized and characterized. The trifluoromethyl‐containing diamines include 2,4‐diamino‐3′‐trifluoromethylazobenzene, 2,4‐diamino‐1‐[(4′‐trifluoromethylphenoxy) phenyl] aniline, 3,5‐diamino‐1‐[(4′‐trifluoromethylphenoxy) phenyl] benzamide, 3,5‐diamino‐1‐[(3′‐trifluoromethyl) phenyl] benzamide, 1,4‐bis(4′‐aminophenoxy)‐2‐(3′‐trifluoromethylphenyl) benzene, 3,5‐diaminobenzenetrifluoride, 4,4′‐diamino‐4″‐(p‐trifluoromethyl phenoxy) triphenylamine, and 4‐[(4′‐trifluoromethylphenoxy) phenyl]‐2,6‐bis(4″‐aminophenyl)pyridine. Strong and flexible copolyimide films, produced by casting the polyamic acid solution followed by thermal imidization, exhibited great thermal stability and high mechanical properties. The polyimides had an ultraviolet–visible absorption cutoff at 330–340 nm and pretilt angles as high as 20° for nematic liquid crystals, making them great potential candidates for advanced liquid‐crystal display applications. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The inclusion behavior of benzo-15-crown-5 with hydrated transition metal picrates

Six kinds of benzo-15-crown-5 (L) adducts having the stoichiometric formula M(Pic)₂ · L · xH₂O (M=Mn, Cu, x=2; M=Co, Ni, Zn, Cd, x=4; Pic means picrate anion) have been synthesized and characterized by EA, IR, UV and molar conductance. The X-ray crystal structural analysis of the benzo-15-crown-5 adduct with hydrated copper(II) picrate revealed that the benzo-15-crown-5 molecule virtually acts as a second-sphere ligand, which associates with the copper(II) ion by hydrogen bonding of the coordinating water molecule. By the comparison of the IR, UV spectra and molar conductance of the new adducts prepared, it can be deduced that the other adducts exhibit the similar coordination environment to that of the copper adduct.     

Porphyrin Clathrates. Crystal Structures of Two Unexpected Products Obtained by Solvothermal Reactions of Pt-tetra(4-carboxyphenyl)porphyrin with Copper Acetate

The X-ray crystal structure of IX, perchlorate salt of R-(–-2-ethyl-N-benzyl-4,7,19,13-tetraoxa-8,9-benzo-1-azacyclopentadec-8-ene has been determined. In the molecule, the protonated nitrogen atom participates in two N-HO hydrogen bonds. The unusually high proton affinity of aza crown ether leads to the formation of diastreomer instead of complex formation with chiral R-(+)-1-phenyl ethyl ammonium perchlorate and S-(–)-1-phenyl ethyl ammonium perchlorate. The complex ability of host ethers was evaluated in terms of structural modification.     

Influence of the position of the nitro group on the structural and spectroscopic characteristics of N"-(nitrobenzylidene)isonicotinic hydrazides in the crystalline state

N"-Substituted isonicotinic hydrazides of the general formula Py—C(=O)—N(H)-N"=C(H)—R, where R is o- (1), m- (2), or p-nitrophenyl (3), were studied by IR spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis. The position of the nitro group in these compounds has no effect on the type of the crystal structure. The crystal packings are based on stacks consisting of antiparallel planar molecules. The molecules from the adjacent stacks are linked to each other via the N—H...N_Py hydrogen bonds. Depending on the position of the nitro group, the N...N_Py distance increases in the series 3 > 1 > 2 and the energy of the hydrogen bonds decreases (according to the IR spectroscopic data) from 3.9 to 3.1 kcal mol^–1. Analysis of the IR spectra demonstrated that the intensity of absorption in the (C—H) stretching region of the pyridine ring increases substantially as the the N—H...N_Py hydrogen bond is strengthened. Some regularities of the changes, which are observed for the (NO₂) bands in the spectra of the nitrophenyl-containing conjugated molecules in solutions, persist in the crystalline state.     

Phosphan-, Phosphit- und Phosphido-Komplexe des Vanadiums(V)

Phosphane, Phosphite, Phosphido, Complexes of Vanadium(V) Complex formation of tert-butylimidovanadium(V)trichloride ( 1 ) with phosphanes und phosphites has been studied. Syntheses of phosphidovanadium(V) compounds ^tC₄H₉N?VCp(NH^tC₄H₉)[P(SiMe₃)₂] and ^tC₄H₉N?VCp(NⁱProp₂)(PR₂) (R?SiMe₃, Ph) are described starting from the corresponding chlorovanadium(V) complexes. The reaction of 1 with silver hexafluorophosphate yields a bis(fluoro)phosphidovanadium(IV complex [(μ-PF₂)₂V₂Cl₂)(N^tC₄H₉)₂]; as primary intermediate product of the unknown redox reaction a cationic vanadium(V) complex [^tC₄H₉N?VCl₂ · PPh₃]⁺PF₆^? has been isolated. 1 reacts with an excess of diisopropylamine forming ^tC₄H₉N?V(NⁱProp₂)Cl₂ ( 16 ); in addition the following diisopropylamido-tert-butylimidovanadium(V) compounds ^tC₄H₉N?VCp(NⁱProp₂)Cl ( 3 ) and ^tC₄H₉N?V(NⁱProp₂)X₂ (X?CH₂CMe₃, O^tC₄H₉, CH₃COO) has been prepared. All compounds obtained are characterized by ¹H, ⁵¹V, ³¹P NMR spectroscopy. The X-ray diffraction analysis of 16 and 3 indicate a planar coordination sphere of the amido nitrogen atom.

Synthesis and Structure of Silver(II) Tetrafluoroaurate(III) Ag[AuF₄]₂ Intensive green single crystals of Ag[AuF₄]₂ can be obtained by heating up micro crystalline Ag[AuF₄]₂ in autoclaves (p(F₂) ～ 200 bar, T ～ 400°C, t ～ 14 d). It crystallizes monoclinic, space group P2₁/n ? C; (No. 14) with a = 522.3(1), b = 1101.3(3), c = 550.5(2) pm, β = 94.98(3), Z = 2 and is isotypic with Pd[AuF₄]₂.     

Zur Kristallstruktur von Ba2ZnO3

On the Crystal Structure of Ba₂ZnO₃ Single crystals of Ba₂ZnO₃ were prepared by solid state reaction. It crystallizes monoclinic: space group C ? C12/c1; a = 5.833; b = 11.376; c = 12.585 Å; β = 93.63°; Z = 8. The crystal structure is characterised by [ZnO₃] chains along [100]. They are connected by Ba²⁺ in seven fold oxygen coordination.
