For crack growth along an interface between dissimilar materials the effect of combined modes I, II and III at the crack-tip is investigated. First, in order to highlight situations where crack growth is affected by a mode III contribution, examples of material configurations are discussed where mode III has an effect. Subsequently, the focus is on crack growth along an interface between an elastic-plastic solid and an elastic substrate. The analyses are carried out for conditions of small-scale yielding, with the fracture process at the interface represented by a cohesive zone model. Due to the mismatch of elastic properties across the interface the corresponding elastic solution has an oscillating stress singularity, and this solution is applied as boundary conditions on the outer edge of the region analyzed. For several combinations of modes I, II and III crack growth resistance curves are calculated numerically in order to determine the steady-state fracture toughness. For given values of KI and KII the minimum fracture toughness corresponds to KIII=0 in most of the range analyzed, but there is a range where the minimum occurs for a nonzero value of KIII.  相似文献

The shear and equi-biaxial straining responses of periodic voided single crystals are analysed using discrete dislocation plasticity and a continuum strain gradient crystal plasticity theory. In the discrete dislocation formulation, the dislocations are all of edge character and are modelled as line singularities in an elastic material. The lattice resistance to dislocation motion, dislocation nucleation, dislocation interaction with obstacles and annihilation are incorporated through a set of constitutive rules. Over the range of length scales investigated, both the discrete dislocation and strain gradient plasticity formulations predict a negligible size effect under shear loading. By contrast, under equi-biaxial loading both plasticity formulations predict a strong size dependence with the flow strength approximately scaling inversely with the void spacing. Excellent agreement is obtained between predictions of the two formulations for all crystal types and void volume fractions considered when the material length scale in the non-local plasticity model is chosen to be (about 10 times the slip plane spacing in the discrete dislocation models).  相似文献

A newly developed multi-axial testing technique for sheet materials is employed to investigate the inelastic response of a temper-rolled stainless steel 301LN under isothermal quasi-static loading conditions at room temperature. The experimental technique consists of a flat sheet specimen, which is subject to combinations of shear and normal loading using a custom-made dual-actuator system. The large deformation behavior under monotonic loading is determined along more than 20 distinct radial paths in the stress space. The experimental results indicate that Hill's quadratic yield function along with an associated flow rule provides a good approximation of the initial yield behavior of this anisotropic two-phase FCC/BCC sheet material. Based on the experimental data for radial monotonic loading, it is concluded that conventional isotropic-kinematic hardening models cannot successfully describe the strain hardening of this austenitic steel. Instead, a non-associated anisotropic hardening model is proposed that relates the increase in yield strength to an isothermal martensitic transformation kinetics law. The comparison of the model predictions with the experimental results shows very good agreement for all biaxial and uniaxial experiments.  相似文献

In Part I of this set of two papers, a model of mesoscopic plasticity is developed for studying initial-boundary value problems of small scale plasticity. Here we make qualitative, finite element method-based computational predictions of the theory. We demonstrate size effects and the development of strong inhomogeneity in simple shearing of plastically constrained grains. Non-locality in elastic straining leading to a strong Bauschinger effect is analyzed. Low shear strain boundary layers in constrained simple shearing of infinite layers of polycrystalline materials are not predicted by the model, and we justify the result based on an examination of the no-dislocation-flow boundary condition. The time-dependent, spatially homogeneous, simple shearing solution of PMFDM is studied numerically. The computational results and an analysis of continuous dependence with respect to initial data of solutions for a model linear problem point to the need for a nonlinear study of a stability transition of the homogeneous solution with decreasing grain size and increasing applied deformation. The continuous-dependence analysis also points to a possible mechanism for the development of spatial inhomogeneity in the initial stages of deformation in lower-order gradient plasticity theory. Results from thermal cycling of small scale beams/films with different degrees of constraint to plastic flow are presented showing size effects and reciprocal-film-thickness scaling of dislocation density boundary layer width. Qualitative similarities with results from discrete dislocation analyses are noted where possible. We discuss the convergence of approximate solutions with mesh refinement and its implications for the prediction of dislocation microstructure development, motivated by the notion of measure-valued solutions to conservation laws.

In this paper, we present an experimental study on plastic deformation and damage of polycrystalline pure HCP Ti, as well as modeling of the observed behavior. Mechanical characterization data were conducted, which indicate that the material is orthotropic and displays tension-compression asymmetry. The ex-situ and in-situ X-ray tomography measurements conducted reveal that damage distribution and evolution in this HCP Ti material is markedly different than in a typical FCC material such as copper. Stewart and Cazacu (2011) anisotropic elastic/plastic damage model is used to describe the behavior. All the parameters involved in this model have a clear physical significance, being related to plastic properties, and are determined from very few simple mechanical tests. It is shown that this model predicts correctly the anisotropy in plastic deformation, and its strong influence on damage distribution and damage accumulation. Specifically, for a smooth axisymmetric specimen subject to uniaxial tension, damage initiates at the center of the specimen, and is diffuse; the level of damage close to failure being very low. On the other hand, for a notched specimen subject to the same loading the model predicts that damage initiates at the outer surface of the specimen, and further grows from the outer surface to the center of the specimen, which corroborates with the in-situ tomography data.  相似文献

This work studies the asymptotic stress and displacement fields near the tip of a stationary crack in an elastic–plastic nonhomogeneous material with the emphasis on the effect of material nonhomogeneities on the dominance of the crack tip field. While the HRR singular field still prevails near the crack tip if the material properties are continuous and piecewise continuously differentiable, a simple asymptotic analysis shows that the size of the HRR dominance zone decreases with increasing magnitude of material property gradients. The HRR field dominates at points that satisfy |α−1 ∂α/∂xδ|1/r, |α−12α/(∂xδxγ)|1/r2, |n−1n/∂xδ|1/[r|ln(r/A)|] and |n−12n/(∂xδxγ)|1/[r2|ln(r/A)|], in addition to other general requirements for asymptotic solutions, where α is a material property in the Ramberg–Osgood model, n is the strain hardening exponent, r is the distance from the crack tip, xδ are Cartesian coordinates, and A is a length parameter. For linear hardening materials, the crack tip field dominates at points that satisfy |Etan−1Etan/∂xδ|1/r, |Etan−12Etan/(∂xδxγ)|1/r2, |E−1E/∂xδ|1/r, and |E−12E/(∂xδxγ)|1/r2, where Etan is the tangent modulus and E is Young’s modulus.  相似文献

The paper gives a review of the main features introduced in the multi-mechanism models, of the present possibilities and of further developments. In the two last decades, various materials and mechanical effects were studied using multi-mechanism model types. Particular attention was given to the possible link between the mechanism definitions and the physical deformation sources. The main results of these works are first recalled. Propositions of future development for the multi-mechanism models are finally given.  相似文献
