A new algorithm using polar coordinate system similarity (PCSS) for tracking particle in particle tracking velocimetry (PTV) is proposed. The essence of the algorithm is to consider simultaneously the changes of the distance and angle of surrounding particles relative to the object particle. Monte Carlo simulations of a solid body rotational flow and a parallel shearing flow are used to investigate flows measurable by PCSS and the influences of experimental parameters on the implementation of the new algorithm. The results indicate that the PCSS algorithm can be applied to flows subjected to strong rotation and is not sensitive to experimental parameters in comparison with the conventional binary image cross-correlation (BICC) algorithm. The purpose of this study is the active control of flow separation on an ONERA D airfoil, using continuous blowing microjets. Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) is used to measure velocity fields at midspan around the airfoil in both controlled and uncontrolled cases. Post-processing based on Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) is developed to exhibit the main energetic features of the flow. Therefore, the detailed study of the POD modes for separated and stalled cases leads to a better understanding of the control mechanisms. Velocity and Strain-Rate Characteristics of Opposed Isothermal Flows   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
Velocity measurements in the isothermal flows created by an opposed nozzle configuration are reported with emphasis on the axis, stagnation plane and the distributions of mean and instantaneous strain rates. The instrumentation comprised particle image velocimetry (PIV) with silicon oil droplets added to the flows upstream of both nozzles with the laser sheet passing through the axis between the nozzles. The results identify the regions of high strain rates and quantify the development of the mean and turbulent components of the flow from the nozzle exits as a function of bulk velocities from 3 to 8.2 m/s and nozzle separations from 0.4 to 1.0 diameters. Results show, for example, the rise in the values of axial and radial normal stress towards the stagnation plane with values increasing by up to 300% and 160% respectively. The maximum mean strain rate occurred just over one nozzle radius from the axis at the smallest separation and with values that increased from 450 to 950 s−1 with decreasing separation at a bulk velocity of 3.0 m/s. Probability density functions were near Gaussian and hence much larger instantaneous strain rates were observed. The PIV image size had the advantage that it allowed the entire flow field to be viewed in terms of velocity vectors and derived quantities include mean strain rates. Small asymmetry of the flow and the higher strain rates at finite distances from the nominal impingement plane were observed. The experimental results permitted the domain of applicability of different modelling approaches to be defined more accurately and calculations were performed with different turbulence models. The results showed that two-equation turbulence models did not represent turbulence intensities close to impingement and that Reynolds stress closures produce superior agreement. It was further shown that ad hoc modifications to the dissipation equation, such as those based on the ratio of the turbulent to mean strain time scale, can improve results at the expense of generality. It is also shown that mean flows are well reproduced by a Reynolds stress closure for all nozzle separations. Comments are included on the implications of the results for investigations of reacting flows and extinction.  相似文献

We investigate the gas-particle dynamics of a device designed for biological pre-clinical experiments. The device uses transonic/supersonic gas flow to accelerate microparticles such that they penetrate the outer skin layers. By using a shock tube coupled to a correctly expanded nozzle, a quasi-one-dimensional, quasi-steady flow (QSF) is produced to uniformly accelerate the microparticles. The system utilises a microparticle “cassette” (a diaphragm sealed container) that incorporates a jet mixing mechanism to stir the particles prior to diaphragm rupture. Pressure measurements reveal that a QSF exit period – suitable for uniformly accelerating microparticles – exists between 155 and 220 mus after diaphragm rupture. Immediately preceding the QSF period, a starting process secondary shock was shown to form with its (x,t) trajectory comparing well to theoretical estimates. To characterise the microparticle, flow particle image velocimetry experiments were conducted at the nozzle exit, using particle payloads with varying diameter (2.7–48 μm), density (600–16,800 kg/m3) and mass (0.25–10 mg). The resultant microparticle velocities were temporally uniform. The experiments also show that the starting process does not significantly influence the microparticle nozzle exit velocities. The velocity distribution across the nozzle exit was also uniform for the majority of microparticle types tested. For payload masses typically used in pre-clinical drug and vaccine applications (≤ 1 mg), it was demonstrated that payload scaling does not affect the microparticle exit velocities. These characteristics show that the microparticle exit conditions are well controlled and are in agreement with ideal theory. These features combined with an attention to the practical requirements of a pre-clinical system make the device suitable for investigating microparticle penetration into the skin for drug delivery.  相似文献

Large vortices occurring in the axial plane of a self-similar axisymmetric turbulent jet are educed by spatially filtering PIV data. First, the instantaneous PIV frame is convolved with a Gaussian kernel to obtain a smooth (low-pass) field. Next, the low-pass field is Galilean transformed to expose the large vortices residing near the edges of the jet. Large vortices tend to organize themselves in preferred modes; evidence of ring and helical modes is revealed by Galilean transformation of the low-pass filtered field. Both modes seem to occur prominently in jets, with the helical mode being the more frequent. The overall diameter of both ring and helical modes is comparable with the local jet width. The low-pass field occasionally exhibits arrowhead shaped structures with large entrainment at their downstream tips. Stochastic estimates computed from the Galilean-transformed low-pass filtered field indicate that jet meander and a sweep-in of ambient fluid are sufficient to reconstruct large vortices. This experimental study was carried out to investigate the turbulent shallow wake generated by a vertical sharp-edged flat plate suspended in a shallow channel flow with a gap near the bed. The objective of this study is to understand the effect of the gap flow on the wake by studying two different gap heights between the channel bed and the bottom edge of the bluff body. These two cases will be compared to the no-gap case which is considered as a reference case. The maximum flow velocity was 0.45 m/s and the Reynolds number based on the water depth was 45,000. Extensive measurements of the flow field in the vertical mid-plane and in the horizontal near-bed, mid-depth, and near-surface planes were made using particle image velocimetry. This paper is part of an extensive study to characterise the gap-flow effects and is primarily concerned with the mean velocity fields, while a companion paper discusses the turbulence characteristics. The size of the wake identified in the horizontal planes is found to vary in the three planes, where the gap flow enhances the entrainment in the near-wake region in the near-bed velocity field. The results also revealed that, if the gap flow is weak, it is engulfed by the recirculation zone formed just behind the bluff body whose axis is perpendicular to the vertical mid-plane. On the other hand, if the gap flow is relatively strong, it penetrates in the downstream direction and only a portion of it is diverted upward to feed the recirculation zone.  相似文献
