Fermionic solution of the Andrews-Baxter-Forrester model. II. Proof of Melzer's polynomial identities

We compute the one-dimensional configuration sums of the ABF model using the fermionic technique introduced in part I of this paper. Combined with the results of Andrews, Baxter, and Forrester, we prove polynomial identities for finitizations of the Virasoro characters as conjectured by Melzer. In the thermodynamic limit these identities reproduce Rogers-Ramanujan-type identities for the unitary minimal Virasoro characters conjectured by the Stony Brook group. We also present a list of additional Virasoro character identities which follow from our proof of Melzer's identities and application of Bailey's lemma.Dedicated to the memory of Piet Kasteleyn.     

Biological production of ethanol from coal synthesis gas

The anaerobic bacteriaClostridium ljungdahlii produces ethanol and acetate from CO, CO₂, and H₂ in synthesis gas. Early studies with the bacterium showed that relatively high concentrations of ethanol could be produced by lowering the fermentation pH and eliminating yeast extract from the medium in favor of a defined medium. This article presents the results from a medium development study based on the aerobic bacteriumEscherichia coli. The results of continuous-reactor studies in a continuously stirred tank reactor (CSTR) with and without cell recycle are shown to demonstrate the utility of this improved medium.     

Diffusion in Lorentz lattice gas automata with backscattering

The probability of first return to the initial intervalx and the diffusion tensorD _x are calculated exactly for a ballistic Lorentz gas on a Bethe lattice or Cayley tree. It consists of a moving particle and a fixed array of scatterers, located at the nodes, and the lengths of the intervals between scatterers are determined by a geometric distribution. The same values forx andD _x apply also to a regular space lattice with a fraction of sites occupied by a scatterer in the limit of a small concentration of scatterers. If backscattering occurs, the results are very different from the Boltzmann approximation. The theory is applied to different types of lattices and different types of scatterers having rotational or mirror symmetries.     

用超临界气体抽提方法研究抚顺烟煤的组成和结构——Ⅰ.抽出物的分离及GC、GC/MS分析

将抚顺烟煤用甲苯作溶剂,在半连续抽提装置上,于350℃、20MPa条件下,进行超临界气体抽提。抽出物先分离成油、沥青烯及前沥青烯三个族组份,再用离子交换树脂、硅胶柱色谱作进一步分离。GC和GC/MS的分析结果表明,油段分中存在正构烷烃(C_(13)—C_(31))、类异戊二烯化合物及长链烷基苯系列,这些化合物可提供抚顺烟煤的地球化学信息。     

Correlations between Van der Waals' volume and retention index general equation applicable to different homologous series

Summary Correlations between retention index (R_I) and Van der Waals' volume (V_W) in homologous series of n-alcohols, n-aldehydes and esters are studied on the stationary phases Carbowax 1540 and squalane. Influence of functional groups is quantified and a method for obtaining one general equation, valid for an indeterminate number of homologous series, is proposed.     

Glass capillary gas chromatography of amino acid enantiomers

Glass capillaries coated with Chirasil-Val, a chirally functionalised polysiloxane, are capable in principle of resolving all protein amino-acid enantiomers in a single run and within a short analysis time, thus allowing for example the quantitative amino acid determination by enantiomer labelling. The elution characteristics of the individual amino acids however are also dependent upon the chemical nature of the capillary wall surface, and a surface pretreatment is found to be necessary if all protein amino acids are to be analysed. Of the various methods of pretreatment tested, etching of borosilicate glass with gaseous HCl followed by deposition of colloidal silicic acid is considered to be the most suitable.

通过对烷烃，醇类等有机物在五种不同极性固定相上的气相色谱保留值的测定，提出了从有机物气相色谱保留值测定其正辛醇/分配系数的公式，研究了从不同极性固定相上测得的保留值来测定其分配系数的准确性，得出烷烃类在所有柱上测得的保留值与其分配系数间均具有很好的关联，烷烃醇类在极性相异柱上的保留值之比值与其分配系数间也有很好的相关性，从而为烷烃及醇类等有机物分配系数的测定提供了一种简单、可靠，易行的新方法。     

Mercury species immobilized on sulphydryl cotton: A new candidate reference material for mercury speciation

A batch of sulphydryl cotton microcolumns was prepared and charged with a mixed Hg standard solution (methyl-, ethyl- and inorganic Hg, 10 g l^–1 as Hg, 3 ml) and stored at 4 °C in a light-tight box. At regular time intervals over a 4 month period microcolumns were removed and Hg species were quantified by gas chromatography microwave-induced plasma atomic emission spectrometry (after elution, extraction and derivatization steps). It was found that analyte recoveries for methyl- and inorganic Hg were quantitative over the 4 month period while ethyl-Hg species appeared to be stable for up to 2 months.     

Composition and major odorous compounds of the essential oil of Bifora radians,an aldehyde-producing weed

The composition of the essential oil of Bifora radians, an aldehyde-producing weed, has been investigated by capillary gas chromatography, coupled gas chromatography – mass spectrometry, on-line catalytic hydrogenation and coupled gas chromatography – infrared spectrometry. The nineteen compounds identified included eighteen aldehydes: seven alkanals (C6, C9, C10, C11, C12, C13, and C14), ten alkenals, including five (E)-2-alkenals (C12, C13, C14, C15, and C16), and one (E,E)-2,4-alkadienal (C13). Typical Bifora odors were attributed to three major (E)-2-alkenals, C12, C13, and C14.
