On locally convex hypersurfaces in Hadamard manifolds

Locally convex compact hypersurfaces immersed in a hollow simply connected Riemannian space of nonpositive sectional curvature are considered. They are proved to be convex hypersurfaces homeomorphic to the sphere. A similar result for immersed hypersurfaces with nonpositive definite second quadratic form of rank no smaller than one is obtained. A strict topology on Orlicz spaces

Let φ be a Young function, Ω be a locally compact space, and μ be a positive Radon measure on Ω. We consider a strict topology (in the sense of Sentilles‐Taylor) on the Orlicz function space and investigate various properties of this locally convex topology. We also study the Orlicz space of a locally compact group G with a left Haar measure under the strict topology and certain other natural locally convex topologies. Finally we present some results on various continuity properties of convolution operators on under the topology and other natural ones.     

Time Regularity for Random Walks on Locally Compact Groups

Let G be a compactly generated, locally compact group, and let T be the operator of convolution with a probability measure μ on G. Our main results give sufficient conditions on μ for the operator T to be analytic in L ^p (G), 1 < p < ∞, where analyticity means that one has an estimate of form for all n = 1, 2, ... in L ^p operator norm. Counterexamples show that analyticity may not hold if some of the conditions are not satisfied.     

Pontryagin Classes of Generalized Symmetric Spaces

The real characteristic Pontryagin classes of generalized symmetric spaces with simple compact principal Lie groups are calculated in this paper.     

Infrared Variables for the SU(3) Yang–Mills Field

We generalize the self-dual parameterization of the SU(2) Yang–Mills field proposed by Niemi and Faddeev for describing the infrared limit of the theory to the case of the gauge group SU(3). We demonstrate that the duality property intrinsic to the SU(2) gauge field cannot be transferred automatically to the higher-rank group case. We interpret the algebraic structures appearing in the Lagrangian for the new compact variables in terms of the group products SU(2)³.     

Disintegration and perfectness of measure spaces

For every finite measure space (X,A,P) we find a unique representation P=Q₁+Q₂+Q₃ such that Q₁ is compact, Q₂ is perfect and purely noncompact and Q₃ is purely nonperfect. We show that every Pachl-_O-disintegrable probability space is Ramachandran-_O-disintegrable and therefore perfect and under a certain condition we prove the equivalence between compactness and Ramachandran-_O-disintegrability.     

A compact HL-space need not have a monolithic hyperspace

We show that Kunen's example of a compact L-space, constructed under CH, can be modified so that it has a non-monolithic hyperspace. This answers a question of Bell's. This example is also relevant to a question of Arhangel'skii's.

     

Compact Laws of the Iterated Logarithm for B-Valued Random Variables with Two-Dimensional Indices

Let be a real separable Banach space and {X, X _{n, m}; (n, m) N ²} B-valued i.i.d. random variables. Set . In this paper, the compact law of the iterated logarithm, CLIL(D), for B-valued random variables with two-dimensional indices ranging over a subset D of N ² is studied. There is a gap between the moment conditions for CLIL(N ¹) and those for CLIL(N ²). The main result of this paper fills this gap by presenting necessary and sufficient conditions for the sequence to be almost surely conditionally compact in B, where, for 0, 1 r 2, N ^r (, ) = {(n, m) N ²; n m n exp{(log n) ^r–1 (n)}} and (·) is any positive, continuous, nondecreasing function such that (t)/(log log t) is eventually decreasing as t , for some > 0.
