On the spectrum of Markov semigroups via sample path large deviations

The essential spectral radius of a sub-Markovian process is defined as the infimum of the spectral radiuses of all local perturbations of the process. When the family of rescaled processes satisfies sample path large deviation principle, the spectral radius and the essential spectral radius are expressed in terms of the rate function. The paper is motivated by applications to reflected diffusions and jump Markov processes describing stochastic networks for which the sample path large deviation principle has been established and the rate function has been identified while essential spectral radius has not been calculated.     

Convergence rates in monotone separable stochastic networks

We study bounds on the rate of convergence to the stationary distribution in monotone separable networks which are represented in terms of stochastic recursive sequences. Monotonicity properties of this subclass of Markov chains allow us to formulate conditions in terms of marginal network characteristics. Two particular examples, generalized Jackson networks and multiserver queues, are considered.     

Fourier series and the Lubkin W-transform

We discuss the effect of a particular sequence acceleration method, the Lubkin W-transform, on the partial sums of Fourier series. We consider a very general class of functions with a single jump discontinuity, and prove that this method fails on a large set of points. The existence and uniqueness of solution and the convergence of a multi-step iterative algorithm for a system of variational inclusions with (<Emphasis Type="Italic">A</Emphasis>, <Emphasis Type="Italic">η</Emphasis>, <Emphasis Type="Italic">m</Emphasis>)-accretive operators

In this paper, we introduce and study a new system of variational inclusions with (A, η, m)-accretive operators which contains variational inequalities, variational inclusions, systems of variational inequalities and systems of variational inclusions in the literature as special cases. By using the resolvent technique for the (A, η, m)-accretive operators, we prove the existence and uniqueness of solution and the convergence of a new multi-step iterative algorithm for this system of variational inclusions in real q-uniformly smooth Banach spaces. The results in this paper unifies, extends and improves some known results in the literature.

An arithmetic model for the total disorder process

We prove a multidimensional extension of Selberg’s central limit theorem for the logarithm of the Riemann zeta function on the critical line. The limit is a totally disordered process, whose coordinates are all independent and Gaussian.      

Method of summation of some slowly convergent series

A new method of summation of slowly convergent series is proposed. It may be successfully applied to the summation of generalized and basic hypergeometric series, as well as some classical orthogonal polynomial series expansions. In some special cases, our algorithm is equivalent to Wynn’s epsilon algorithm, Weniger transformation [E.J. Weniger, Nonlinear sequence transformations for the acceleration of convergence and the summation of divergent series, Computer Physics Reports 10 (1989) 189-371] or the technique recently introduced by ?í?ek et al. [J. ?í?ek, J. Zamastil, L. Skála, New summation technique for rapidly divergent perturbation series. Hydrogen atom in magnetic field, Journal of Mathematical Physics 44 (3) (2003) 962-968]. In the case of trigonometric series, our method is very similar to the Homeier’s H transformation, while in the case of orthogonal series — to the K transformation. Two iterated methods related to the proposed method are considered. Some theoretical results and several illustrative numerical examples are given.     

Application of modified information criterion to multiple change point problems

The modified information criterion (MIC) is applied to detect multiple change points in a sequence of independent random variables. We find that the method is consistent in selecting the correct model, and the resulting test statistic has a simple limiting distribution. We show that the estimators for locations of change points achieve the best convergence rate, and their limiting distribution can be expressed as a function of a random walk. A simulation is conducted to demonstrate the usefulness of this method by comparing the powers between the MIC and the Schwarz information criterion.     

On functional improper Volterra integral equations and impulsive differential equations in ordered Banach spaces

In this paper we derive existence and comparison results for discontinuous improper functional integral equations of Volterra type in an ordered Banach space which has a regular order cone. For this purpose we prove Dominated and Monotone Convergence Theorems for improper integrals. The obtained results are then applied to first-order impulsive differential equations. Concrete examples are also solved by using symbolic programming.
