Field-of-values analysis of preconditioned iterative methods for nonsymmetric elliptic problems

Summary. The convergence rate of Krylov subspace methods for the solution of nonsymmetric systems of linear equations, such as GMRES or FOM, is studied. Bounds on the convergence rate are presented which are based on the smallest real part of the field of values of the coefficient matrix and of its inverse. Estimates for these quantities are available during the iteration from the underlying Arnoldi process. It is shown how these bounds can be used to study the convergence properties, in particular, the dependence on the mesh-size and on the size of the skew-symmetric part, for preconditioners for finite element discretizations of nonsymmetric elliptic boundary value problems. This is illustrated for the hierarchical basis and multilevel preconditioners which constitute popular preconditioning strategies for such problems. Received May 3, 1996     

Scattering from infinite rough tubular surfaces

We study the Helmholtz equation in the exterior of an infinite perturbed cylinder with a Dirichlet boundary condition. Existence and uniqueness of solutions are established using the variational technique introduced (SIAM J. Math. Anal. 2005; 37 (2):598–618). We also provide stability estimates with explicit dependence of the constants in terms of the frequency and the perturbed cylinder thickness. Copyright © 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

High longitudinal selectivity of shifting multiplexing in volume holograms

High longitudinal selectivity of the shifting multiplexing with spherical reference wave is proposed and demonstrated. A simplified method based on wave optics is used for calculating the selectivity, and the result fits well the experimental measurement. Under the paraxial condition, a simple formula for the longitudinal selectivity is introduced. With use of an object lens with effective NA=0.817, we obtain that an FWHM of selectivity is as small as 1 μm.     

Positive Solutions of a Class of Quasilinear Elliptic Equations in Two-dimensional Exterior Domains

Sufficient conditions for the existence of positive solutions to a class of quasilinear elliptic equations in two-dimensional exterior domains are given.

Uniform convergence of Galerkin‐multigrid methods for nonconforming finite elements for second‐order problems with less than full elliptic regularity

In this article we prove uniform convergence estimates for the recently developed Galerkin‐multigrid methods for nonconforming finite elements for second‐order problems with less than full elliptic regularity. These multigrid methods are defined in terms of the “Galerkin approach,” where quadratic forms over coarse grids are constructed using the quadratic form on the finest grid and iterated coarse‐to‐fine intergrid transfer operators. Previously, uniform estimates were obtained for problems with full elliptic regularity, whereas these estimates are derived with less than full elliptic regularity here. Applications to the nonconforming P₁, rotated Q₁, and Wilson finite elements are analyzed. The result applies to the mixed method based on finite elements that are equivalent to these nonconforming elements. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A family of maximal surfaces in Lorentz-Minkowski three-space

We prove the existence of an infinite family of complete spacelike maximal surfaces with singularities in Lorentz-Minkowski three-space and study their properties. These surfaces are distinguished by their number of handles and have two elliptic catenoidal ends.

     

Martin Boundaries of Elliptic Skew Products, Semismall Perturbations, and Fundamental Solutions of Parabolic Equations

We consider positive solutions of elliptic partial differential equations on non-compact domains of Riemannian manifolds. We explicitly determine Martin boundaries and Martin kernels for a class of elliptic equations in skew product form by exploiting and developing perturbation theory for elliptic equations and short/long-time estimates for fundamental solutions of parabolic equations.
