A non-destructive technique is presented for verifying torsional spring constants used in lateral force microscopy. Various calibrations of the microscope are required and these are detailed. The technique produces reasonable values which tend to be larger than those predicted from considerations of the cantilever dimensions. The differences are discussed in terms of length corrections and particularly the uncertainty in the thickness of the cantilevers, which has an enormous effect on the values obtained through a priori calculations. Methods for inferring the thickness are discussed. Further, artefacts in conventional force measurements related to the experiments performed here are discussed. 相似文献

AbstractPassive gravity compensation technologies based on counterweight and torsional springs is rarely discussed due to the unavailability of an exact mathematical manipulation to determine the required spring constants to achieve the static balance. This article proposes using these springs for a parallel kinematics mechanism with revolute joints. Either the spring constants or initial spring displacements are determined by a constrained optimization approach aiming at minimizing the total potential energy of the mechanism or the static reaction in the actuation direction at the actuators, along a prescribed trajectory. This results in reduced actuation forces/ torques and hence reduced power consumption. 相似文献

We discuss a novel method for capturing the dynamic coupling between a fluid and an elastic solid, the so-called fluid–structure interaction. This method integrates a lattice Boltzmann model to capture the fluid dynamics with a lattice spring model to capture the micromechanics of the solid phase. We then examine the fluid-driven motion of microcapsules, which are modeled as fluid-filled, elastic shells, along a corrugated substrate. We show that the ability of the capsules to navigate along the surface depends critically on capsule's elastic modulus. In particular, we illustrate how this substrate can be utilized to design a device for sorting microcapsules by their mechanical properties. These results apply not only to polymeric microcapsules, but also describe the interaction between the substrate and certain biological cells (e.g., leukocytes and other cells with cytoskeletons). Hence, by isolating species of a certain stiffness, the device could be highly useful for applications in biotechnology and tissue engineering or in the quality control of fabricated microcapsules. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Performance of ultra-low frequency passive vertical vibration isolation system with reverse pendulum
A novel long period passive vertical vibration isolator constructed by mounting reverse pendulums on two pairs of torsion
springs is presented. By theoretical analysis and numerical calculation, it is shown that the isolator can achieve much longer
resonant period due to gravitational positive feedback and is smaller in size than the current torsion spring isolators with
the same geometric parameters.

We study the force vs. extension behaviour of a helical spring made of a thin torsionally stiff anisotropic elastic rod. Our focus is on springs of very low helical pitch. For certain parameters of the problem such a spring is found not to unwind when pulled but rather to form hockles that pop out one by one and lead to a highly non-monotonic force-extension curve. Between abrupt loop pop-outs this curve is well described by the planar elastica whose relevant solutions are classified. Our results may be relevant for tightly coiled nanosprings in future micro- and nano(electro)mechanical devices. 相似文献
