An algebra of meromorphic corner symbols

Operators on manifolds with corners that have base configurations with geometric singularities can be analysed in the frame of a conormal symbolic structure which is in spirit similar to the one for conical singularities of Kondrat'ev's work. Solvability of elliptic equations and asymptotics of solutions are determined by meromorphic conormal symbols. We study the case when the base has edge singularities which is a natural assumption in a number of applications. There are new phenomena, caused by a specific kind of higher degeneracy of the underlying symbols. We introduce an algebra of meromorphic edge operators that depend on complex parameters and investigate meromorphic inverses in the parameter-dependent elliptic case. Among the examples are resolvents of elliptic differential operators on manifolds with edges.     

Minimal Bar Tableaux

Motivated by recent results of Stanley, we generalize the rank of a partition λ to the rank of a shifted partition S(λ). We show that the number of bars required in a minimal bar tableau of S(λ) is max(o, e + (ℓ(λ) mod 2)), where o and e are the number of odd and even rows of λ. As a consequence we show that the irreducible projective characters of S_n vanish on certain conjugacy classes. Another corollary is a lower bound on the degree of the terms in the expansion of Schur’s Q_λ symmetric functions in terms of the power sum symmetric functions. Received November 20, 2003     

Expected Reflection Distance in G(r, 1, n) after a Fixed Number of Reflections

Extending to r > 1 a formula of the authors, we compute the expected reflection distance of a product of t random reflections in the complex reflection group G(r, 1, n). The result relies on an explicit decomposition of the reflection distance function into irreducible G(r, 1, n)-characters and on the eigenvalues of certain adjacency matrices.Received December 8, 2003     

Exact controllability of infinite dimensional systems persists under small perturbations

This paper studies the concept of controllability for infinite-dimensional linear control systems in Banach spaces. First, we prove that the set of admissible control operators for the semigroup generator is unchanged if we perturb the generator by the Desch–Schappacher perturbations. Second we show that exact controllability is not changed by such perturbations.     

Yb:FAP和Yb:C_3S_2-FAP晶体光谱的温度特性和选择激发

报导了Yb :FAP和Yb :C3S2 _FAP晶体在不同温度下的吸收光谱和荧光光谱实验结果 ,研究发现由于电子_声子近共振耦合作用 ,Yb :FAP和Yb :C3S2 _FAP晶体均存在有明显的振动谱 ,Yb :FAP晶体的零声子线在低温下还劈裂为相差 10cm- 1 的两条线 .采用激光选择激发技术研究了Yb3 离子在FAP和C3S2 _FAP晶体中的格位特征 ,结果表明Yb3 离子在这两种基质中都只占据Ca(Ⅱ )格位 ,但由于CaF2 的挥发 ,导致了Ca(Ⅱ )格位的局部畸变 .     

Kinetic Models for Chemotaxis and their Drift-Diffusion Limits

Kinetic models for chemotaxis, nonlinearly coupled to a Poisson equation for the chemo-attractant density, are considered. Under suitable assumptions on the turning kernel (including models introduced by Othmer, Dunbar and Alt), convergence in the macroscopic limit to a drift-diffusion model is proven. The drift-diffusion models derived in this way include the classical Keller-Segel model. Furthermore, sufficient conditions for kinetic models are given such that finite-time-blow-up does not occur. Examples are given satisfying these conditions, whereas the macroscopic limit problem is known to exhibit finite-time-blow-up. The main analytical tools are entropy techniques for the macroscopic limit as well as results from potential theory for the control of the chemo-attractant density.Present address: Centro de Matemática e Aplicações Fundamentais, Universidade de Lisboa, Av. Metric and Periodic Lines in Real Inner Product Space Geometries

The lines of euclidean and hyperbolic geometries are characterized as metric lines in the sense of Blumenthal–Menger, and the lines of spherical and elliptic geometry as periodic ones. In euclidean geometries there do not exist periodic lines.     

Invariant ideals of twisted crossed products

We will prove a result concerning the inclusion of non-trivial invariant ideals inside non-trivial ideals of a twisted crossed product. We will also give results concerning the primeness and simplicity of crossed products of twisted actions of locally compact groups on -algebras. Non-Trivial t-Intersection in the Function Lattice

The function lattice, or generalized Boolean algebra, is the set of ℓ-tuples with the ith coordinate an integer between 0 and a bound n_i. Two ℓ-tuples t-intersect if they have at least t common nonzero coordinates. We prove a Hilton–Milner type theorem for systems of t-intersecting ℓ-tuples.Received September 29, 2004
