Local error estimation for singly-implicit formulas by two-step Runge-Kutta methods

In this paper it is shown that the local discretization error ofs-stage singly-implicit methods of orderp can be estimated by embedding these methods intos-stage two-step Runge-Kutta methods of orderp+1, wherep=s orp=s+1. These error estimates do not require any extra evaluations of the right hand side of the differential equations. This is in contrast with the error estimation schemes based on embedded pairs of two singly-implicit methods proposed by Burrage.The work of A. Bellen and M. Zennaro was supported by the CNR and MPI. Linear optical properties of frequency doubling polymers

Measurements of linear optical properties of methylmethacrylate copolymers with non-linear optical 4-alkoxy-4-alkylsulfone stilbene side-chains are presented. From there two methods for phase matching are discussed; one aiming to equalize the refractive indices of the fundamental and the second harmnic wave, the other to suppress the destructive character of the interference. The matter of photo stability of frequency doubling polymers is also discussed.     

A remark on compact matrix quantum groups

On coherent states for the simplest quantum groups

The coherent states for the simplest quantum groups (q-Heisenberg-Weyl, SU _q (2) and the discrete series of representations of SU _q (1, 1)) are introduced and their properties investigated. The corresponding analytic representations, path integrals, and q-deformation of Berezin's quantization on , a sphere, and the Lobatchevsky plane are discussed.     

Convex hull of powers of a complex number,trinomial equations and the Farey sequence

The color of a complex number is defined as the number of vertices of the convex hull of powers of that number. This induces a coloring of the unit disk. The structure of the set of points where the color changes is investigated here. It is observed that there is a connection between this fractal set and some family of trinomial equations. Three algorithms for coloring the unit disk are described, the last one (related to the Farey sequence) arising out of a conjecture. This conjecture is formulated and proved in this presentation.     

Analysis of mixed finite element methods on locally refined grids

Summary We consider the mixed finite element method for locally refined triangulations. A local projection operator is defined to satisfy the commutation property that is required in the general theory of mixed methods. Our results can be applied to every known space of arbitrary order over rectangles or triangles. Optimal-order error estimates and superconvergence for the flux along the Gauss lines are established.     

Locking effects in the finite element approximation of elasticity problems

Summary We consider the finite element approximation of the 2D elasticity problem when the Poisson ratiov is close to 0.5. It is well-known that the performance of certain commonly used finite elements deteriorates asv0, a phenomenon calledlocking. We analyze this phenomenon and characterize the strength of the locking androbustness of varioush-version schemes using triangular and rectangular elements. We prove that thep-andh-p versions are free of locking with respect to the error in the energy norm. Harmonic maps with fixed singular sets

Suppose Ω is a smooth domain in R^m,N is a compact smooth Riemannian manifold, andZ is a fixed compact subset of Ω having finite (m − 3)-dimensional Minkowski content (e.g.,Z ism − 3 rectifiable). We consider various spaces of harmonic mapsu: Ω →N that have a singular setZ and controlled behavior nearZ. We study the structure of such spacesH and questions of existence, uniqueness, stability, and minimality under perturbation. In caseZ = 0,H is a Banach manifold locally diffeomorphic to a submanifold of the product of the boundary data space with a finite-dimensional space of Jacobi fields with controlled singular behavior.
