The effect of secondary hydrogen-bonding interactions on the crystalline and liquid crystalline phases of quaternary ammonium salts functionalised with a carboxylic group attached at the polar head through a decyl spacer of a homologous series of N-alkyl-N-carboxydecyl-N,N-dimethylammonium bromides was investigated by polarising optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction. The low-temperature crystal phases were found to have a lamellar structure in which the ammonium bromide groups are arranged within the layers in two distinct planes, alternately separated by single layers of alkyl chains and double layers of carboxydecyl chains coupled through the carboxyl end groups. At higher temperatures, although these molecules were made from soft flexible chains, smectic H mesophases were identified. The smectic layers were found to be formed by the same two ionic planes alternately separated by the alkyl and carboxydecyl sub-layers. The smectic structure was compared with the three-dimensional positional order observed in the smectic T phase of dihydroxyl functionalised quaternary ammonium salts already described in the literature.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This work presents new rod-like compounds being fluorene derivatives linked with other parts of the core at 2 and 7 positions – its synthesis and properties. The fluorene moiety is located in the central position of the four rings molecular core. The chain system in most cases was symmetrical and limited to pentyl or hexyl chains. To study the influence of the lateral substituents on mesomorphic properties two types of substituents have been incorporated, centrally located various short alkyl groups at fluorene’s 9,9 positions and outer core fluorosubstitutions located at side phenyl rings. All synthesised compounds exhibit liquid crystalline properties, where for laterally non-substituted and fluorosubstituted derivatives the dominant phases are smectics, while the nematics phases (nematic and chiral nematic – observed mostly on cooling cycle) occurs for compounds having alkyl substituents at 9,9 positions of fluorene. The synthetic methodology and mesomorphic properties of title compounds will be presented in detail as well as photophysical properties such as UV-visible absorption spectra and fluorescence spectra.  相似文献

The processing of a new series of liquid crystalline (LC) epoxy networks was evaluated. Above the glass transition temperature, the low crosslink density networks could be mechanically aligned. The mechanically oriented networks readily lost orientation upon heating. Highly anisotropic liquid crystalline (LC) epoxy networks were also prepared by aligning the mesophase of the prepolymer during the curing process under the influence of a magnetic field. Orientation parameters (f) of 0.13 to 0.57 were achieved by these processes as determined by x-ray diffraction analysis. The ability of the magnetically aligned networks to retain their orientation above the glass transition temperature was determined by time-resolved x-ray diffraction. The stability of the alignment of these networks was found to depend on crosslink density. The effect of the anisotropy of these networks was investigated by measuring the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE). In the aligned networks, there was a substantial reduction in CTE parallel to the direction of the applied field compared to the randomly oriented networks. © 1992 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

A new series of ionic liquid crystals (ILCs), 1-(4-(4-nitrophenylazo)phenyloxy) vinyl-3-methyl-1H-imidazol-3-ium bromide salts (C n , n?=?6, 10) were synthesised. Their chemical structures were determined by 1H NMR, 13C NMR, UV spectroscopy and elemental analysis. The liquid crystalline properties were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, polarising optical microscopy, and powder X-ray diffraction. These measurements showed that C n (n?=?6, 10) exhibit smectic liquid crystalline phases with focal-conic fan-shaped textures. The introduction of vinylimidazolium group onto the azobenzene enhances the thermal stability of the smectic state, which play an important role in forming the smectic layer structure.  相似文献

Surface-attached polypyrrole films have been shown to produce a marked improvement in the stability of n-type single-crystal and polycrystalline Si against oxidation in an aqueous electrolyte. The current production of n-type polycrystalline Si coated with polypyrrole deteriorates less than 30% during 122 hr of irradiation whereas the unprotected bare electrode stops producing photocurrent within 30 s. The polymer protection of the n-type single-crystal Si is significantly less than that of the polycrystalline material because of differences in the adhesion of the polymer film to the electrode surfaces. The adhesion strength is shown to depend on various surface properties of Si and other electrode materials. Moreover, the surface morphology of the electrode affects the topography of the growing surface of the polypyrrole film. Requirements are discussed for the applications of organic conducting polymers to photoelectrochemical devices utilized for solar energy conversion.  相似文献

The synthesis of a new homologous series of novel five-ring compounds composed of hockey stick-shaped molecules derived from 4-hydroxybiphenyl-3-carboxylic acid which exhibit an interesting sequence of phase transitions is presented. Uniaxial nematic and smectic A phases, anticlinic smectic C phase and an unidentified smectic phase at a lower temperature than the latter have been observed. This is perhaps the first example of hockey stick-shaped compounds exhibiting anticlinic smectic C phase directly from the isotropic phase. Polarised light optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffraction measurements and electro-optical switching studies were carried out to identify the mesophases.  相似文献

We report on measurements of deuteron quadrupolar splitting and spin-lattice relaxation times T1Q and T1Z in the columnar phase of a ring-deuteriated hexaoctyloxyrufigallol at 46 MHz as a function of temperature. To describe small-step rotations of these molecules within each column in the columnar phase, a space-fixed frame is used to diagonalize the molecular diffusion tensor. The principal diffusion constants in this so called 'anisotropic viscosity' model Dalpha and Dbeta are for rotations of a molecule around and perpendicular to the columnar axis, respectively. A global target analysis of the spectral densities at seven temperatures in a minimization procedure was carried out. We found that Dalpha > Dbeta, which is consistent with the picture that the motion towards or away from the local director tends to disrupt the packing of molecules within the column.  相似文献

A polymer stabilised liquid crystal film with the order and the molecular alignment of a smectic-A phase at a microscopic level, but with the planar molecular alignment of a chiral nematic phase at a macroscopic level, was prepared. This kind of order and alignment of the molecules of the liquid crystal resulted in the film reflecting circularly polarised incident light with the bandwidth of the spectrum over the wavelength range of 300–2500 nm.  相似文献

Recently, new thermotropic ionic liquid crystals (LCs) with a hexyl-linked tris(imidazolium bromide) core and two terminal alkyl chains were synthesised and characterised. To explore the effect of different counter-ions on the LC behaviour of this system, derivatives with BF4? and Tf2N? counter-ions were prepared and analysed. Five of the BF4? derivatives were found to exhibit thermotropic LC behaviour. The 12-, 14- and 16-carbon tail BF4? compounds form SmA phases. The 18- and 20-carbon tail homologues form what appears to be a smectic phase but are weakly mesogenic and harder to characterise. Only two of the Tf2N? derivatives exhibited mesogenic behaviour. The 18-carbon tail Tf2N? compound forms an as-yet unidentified, highly periodic smectic phase with positional order while the 20-carbon tail homologue forms a periodic SmA phase. The Tf2N? mesogens have much lower clearing points even though their LC phases have more order than the Br? and BF4? mesogens. X-ray diffraction showed that these mesogens have different amounts of tail interdigitation between the smectic layers depending on the counter-ion present. Atomistic molecular dynamics simulations indicated that counter-ion size plays an important role in defining the density of the ionic region, which in turn affects the amount of interdigitation in the smectic phases.  相似文献
