19F NMR study of relative polarities and reactivities of N-H,N-Hg,and N-Au bonds in 2-(4-fluorophenyl)benzimidazole and its PhHg and Ph3PAu derivatives in intermolecular exchange

It has been shown by the¹⁹F NMR method that the relative polarities of nitrogenelement bonds in 2-(4-fluorophenyl)benzimidazole and its PhHg and PPh₃Au derivatives increase in the order N-H19F NMR. It has been found that these reactions occur by a bimolecular associative mechanism and that the N-H bond is substantially less reactive than the N-Hg and N-Au bonds, which have identical reactivities within the limits of sensitivity of the method used.Translated fromIzvestiya Akademii Nauk. Aryl-bis(triorganylphosphine)nickel phenoxides

Compounds of general formulatrans-ArNi(PR₃)₂OAr' (R = Et, cyclohexyl; Ar = 2-MeC₆H₄, 2-FC₆H₄; Ar' = 4-FC₆H₄, 4-NO₂C₆H₄) were synthesized by the reaction of Ar'OK with cationic nickel complexes generated by treatment of ArNi(PR₃)₂Cl with TlBF₄. Syntheses of 4-fluorophenoxide complexes, ArNi(PR₃)₂OC₆H₄F-4, additionally give some quantities oftrans-[ArNi(PR₃)₂OC₆H₄F-4][HOC₆H₄F-4] adducts. Exchange reactions MeC₆H₄Ni(PEt₃)₂OC₆H₄F-4 + XC₆H₄OH 2-MeC₆H₄Ni(PEt₃)₂OC₆H₄X + 4-FC₆H₄OH were studied in THF. The equilibrium is shifted to the right as the acidity of ArOH increases. A linear relationship between lgK _eq and pK _a of XC₆H₄OH in DMSO was found. A conclusion concerning the strong polarization of the Ni-O bond was made on the basis of an analysis of the chemical shifts of fluorine atoms in 2-MeC₆H₄Ni(PEt₃)₂OC₆H₄F-4.Translated fromIvestiya Akademii Nauk. Solvent effects on radical copolymerization of acrylonitrile and methyl acrylate: solvent polarity and solvent-monomer interaction

Abstract

New insights for the effects of organic solvent polarities and solvent-monomer interactions on the radical copolymerization for an important copolymer, poly(acrylonitrile-co-methyl acrylate) (PAN-co-MA), were provided in this research. Solvents, dimethylformamide (DMF), dimethylacetamide (DMAc) and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), were used as reaction media. The polarity of these solvents was in the sequence of DMAc?<?DMF?<?DMSO. By studying the reactivity ratios of AN and MA, the triad fractions of the resultant copolymers, the interactions between monomers and solvents, and the compositions of copolymers at various conversions, we concluded that the solvent polarity had minimal influence on the copolymerization of AN and MA, while the solvent-monomer interactions played important roles. The interactions between monomer-monomer, monomer-solvent, and solvent-solvent, were calculated based on quantum chemistry methods. Both theoretical calculations and experimental results suggested that AN and MA in DMSO tended to aggregate locally, while they could be homogeneously dissolved in DMAc and DMF. The interactions between solvent and monomers could cause local monomer concentration variations, or ‘bootstrap’ effect, which is one of the critical factors affecting the copolymerization process of AN and MA and the chemical structures of the resultant polymers.     

Liquid crystalline properties of dissymmetric molecules IV. The substituent effect on thermal properties of nematic and smectic A phases in three aromatic ring systems with ester linkages

This paper describes the effect of substituent and ester linkage on smectic properties for some derivatives of 4-R -phenyl 4-(4-octyloxybenzoyloxy)benzoates (1), 4-octyloxyphenyl 4-(4-R-benzyloxy)benzoates (2), 4-(4-octyloxybenzoyloxy)phenyl 4- R -benzoates (3), and 4-R-phenyl 4-octyloxyphenyl terephthalates (4) where R = OCH₃, CH₃, OC₈H₁₇, C8H17, halogens, CF₃, OCF₃, CN, NO2, etc. The thermal properties are discussed in terms of the electrostatic nature of the substituents and the relative orientation of the ester groups with respect to both terminal substituents. The substituent effect on the layer structure of the smectic A phase is also examined by means of a small angle X-ray analysis.     

The influence of structural changes of symmetrical dimers containing two phenyl groups on liquid crystalline behaviour

Some symmetrical dimeric compounds containing biphenyl, biphenylcarboxylic acid or benzoiloxyphenyl moieties and polymethylene spacers were synthesised. The mesogenic properties of the synthesised compounds were investigated by optical microscopy, calorimetric and X-ray methods. It was shown that the location and direction of the ester bonds has a crucial significance in mesophase formation.     

Electrophilic addition of lead tetraacetate to 2-carene in an acidic medium

Kováts' coefficients for predicting polarities in silicone stationary phases and their mixtures

Summary A correlation between the retention polarity and the Kováts' coefficient has been found for a number of commercial stationary phases used in gas chromatography. The correlation has been used to predict the polarity of a few mixed stationary phase columns prepared as binary mixtures of OV-101 with OV-25, DC-550 or Carbowax 20M, and also mixtures of OV-225 with SP-2340. A linear relationship was found between polarity and mixture composition. The temperature dependence of the Kováts' coefficient was investigated and found to increase linearly with temperature, the rate of increase depending on the polarity of the stationary phase, with greater increases for more polar stationary phases.     

The effectiveness of solvents as hydrogen bond donors

Taft and Kamlet's -scale of solvent hydrogen bond donation ability is reexamined with regard to its correlations with three widely used polarity scales: Dimroth and Reichardt's E _T (30), Kosower's Z and Mayer's A _N , as well as with the _m values of the solvents when present as monomeric solutes. The correlation with E _T serves to extend the solvent -scale according to the expression:
