Nonlinear optical (NLO) rigid main‐chain polyesters containing azobenzene mesogens with high thermal and temporal stabilities were synthesized from derivatives of hydroxyphenylazobenzoic acid. The NLO properties of the homopolymer, poly[4‐(4‐hydroxy‐3‐methyl phenyl)azo]benzoic acid, and copolymers of 4‐[(4‐hydroxy‐3‐methylphenyl)azo]benzoic acid, 4‐[(4‐hydroxy‐2‐methylphenyl)azo]benzoic acid, and 4‐[(4‐hydroxy‐2‐pentadecyl phenyl)azo]benzoic acid (PSCpHBA) with p‐HBA were measured by the Maker fringe technique. The thermal and liquid‐crystalline (LC) phase behaviors of the polymers were examined by differential scanning calorimetry, a thermal‐stimulated polarization current, and polarized light microscopy. The polymers except PSCpHBA exhibited nematic‐threaded and Schlieren textures. The LC orientations give rise to an enhanced NLO response. The polymers had high thermal and temporal stabilities for second‐harmonic generation activity because of their rigid aromatic backbone. This study suggests that the rigid aromatic main chain exhibiting an LC phase is a promising simple method to synthesize highly stable NLO polymers. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Phase diagrams of main‐chain liquid‐crystalline polymer (MCLCP) solutions have been calculated self‐consistently on the basis of a simple addition of the Flory–Huggins free energy for isotropic mixing, the Maier–Saupe free energy for nematic ordering, and the Flory free energy for chain rigidity of the MCLCP backbone. The calculated phase diagram is an upper critical solution type overlapping with the nematic–isotropic transition. The phase diagram consists of liquid–liquid, liquid–nematic, and pure nematic regions. Subsequently, the dynamics of thermally induced phase separation and morphology development have been investigated by the incorporation of the combined free energy density into the coupled time‐dependent Ginzburg–Landau (model C) equations, which involve conserved compositional and nonconserved orientational order parameters. The numerical calculations reveal a variety of the morphological patterns arising from the competition between liquid–liquid phase separation and nematic ordering of the liquid‐crystalline polymer. Of particular interest is the observation of an inflection in the growth dynamic curve, which may be attributed to the nematic ordering of the MCLCP component, which leads to the breakdown of the interconnected domains. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Low-power phase-modulated Lee–Goldburg homonuclear decoupling was used to record PDLF spectra of fluorine-substituted benzene derivatives dissolved in nematic thermotropic liquid crystalline solvents. The low-power decoupling minimizes sample heating during RF irradiation while still achieving highly resolved PDLF spectra. The method is illustrated by recording spectra for 1,3-dichloro-4-fluoro-5-nitrobenzene, 1,3-dichloro-4-fluorobenzene, and 1,2-difluorobenzene dissolved in different nematic solvents. 相似文献

The detailed mesophasic characterization of main chain liquid crystalline polyurethanes containing biphenyl mesogen, which were synthesized by the novel AB‐type self‐polycondensation approach, was carried out by using Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Polarized Optical Microscopy (POM), variable temperature X‐ray Diffraction (XRD), and Fourier Transform Infrared (FT‐IR) spectroscopic studies. The type of mesophase present in these polymers was identified to be the smectic A phase by POM and XRD studies. The smectic layer thickness was found to increase as the length of the spacer increased. The effect of temperature on the hydrogen bonding was analyzed by FT‐IR studies. The curve‐fitting analysis of the NH stretching and C?O stretching modes of vibrations indicated a gradual decrease in hydrogen bonding during the transition from the crystalline state to the mesophase. The mesophase to isotropic liquid transition was then accompanied by the complete disappearance of the hydrogen bonding. The biphenyl bands also showed changes during phase transitions due to the coupling of biphenyl vibration modes with the urethane linkage attached to it. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Band-structure (BS) calculations of the density of states (DOS) using the full potential augmented plane waves code WIEN97
were performed on the four single-valence vanadium oxides VO, V2O3, VO2 and V2O5. The DOS are discussed with respect to the distortions of the VO6 octahedra, the oxidation states of vanadium and the orbital hybridisations of oxygen atoms. The simulated oxygen K-edge fine
structures (ELNES) calculated with the TELNES program were compared with experimental results obtained by electron energy-loss
spectrometry (EELS), showing good agreement. We show that changes in the fine structures of the investigated vanadium oxides
mainly result from changes in the O-p DOS and not from the shift of the DOS according to a rigid band model.

Laser‐induced Breakdown Detection (LIBD) enables the concentration and size of aquatic nano‐particles (colloids), in the range of 10–1000 nm and from about 1 ng/L (ppt) up to some mg/L (ppm), to be determined. Such particles, which are frequently encountered in aquatic systems, cannot be detected using methods based on laser light scattering or obscuration or if detection is possible, then only at a comparably low level of accuracy. The method of Laser‐induced Breakdown Detection uses a high‐energy pulsed laser beam to selectively generate a plasma (dielectric breakdown) on particles. The method is based on non‐linear optics and allows for the determination of both mean particle size and concentration in aqueous samples. Practically, this method is non‐invasive, sample preparation is not required, and measurement can take place online. This second part of the double publication describes the experimental basics as well as the latest developments in the field of LIBD. Furthermore, it shows examples of practical applications and compares the technology to standard methods like dynamic laser light scattering as well as laser light obscuration. 相似文献

A novel side‐chain liquid‐crystalline polyimide (SLCPI) was prepared via copolycondensation from 3,5‐diamino‐benzonic‐4′‐biphenyl ester, 4,4′‐diamino‐ biphenyl ether, and 3,3′,4,4′‐oxydiphthalic dianhydride. The energy‐minimized structure and liquid crystallinity of SLCPI were investigated by molecular modeling, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), wide‐angle X‐ray scattering, and polarized optical microscopy, respectively. The results indicated that this polyimide (PI) with side‐chain mesogenic units exhibited a nematic NI phase. Because of the in situ self‐reinforcement of side‐chain mesogenic units, the improved tensile strength and modulus of PI films reached 270% and 300%, respectively. The coefficient of thermal expansion of films decreased by 40%. DSC and thermogravimetric analyses indicated that the phase‐transition temperature of SLCPI was above 240 °C, and the 5% weight‐loss temperature was above 520 °C. Moreover, copolycondensation of two diamines with dianhydride and incorporation of pendent mesogenic units diminished the regularity and symmetry of main chains; as a result, SLCPI exhibits good film processability. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
