The dynamics of the direct volume expansion mechanism of light-induced hydrodynamic motions in hybrid-oriented nematic liquid crystal (NLC) have been studied experimentally. It was shown that heating caused by the absorption of a laser beam results in expansion of a NLC volume and induces hydrodynamic flow in a planar capillary. The hydrodynamic flow reorients the NLC molecules and thus the optical properties of the NLC layer are changing. A change of the tilt direction of the NLC director is demonstrated experimentally, and it is shown that hybrid-oriented NLC could be considered as ‘flexible ribbon’. Velocity gradient brings about an increase of curvature when hydrodynamic flow velocity is directed out of the ‘flexible ribbon’s’ curvature. The ‘flexible ribbon’ reverses its curvature when velocity is directed into ‘flexible ribbon’s’ curvature.  相似文献

A number of phenomena that determine the nature of the fluorescence of free complex molecules and the possibility of its analytical application are considered. Attention is specially paid to the specific features of the energetics of radiationless transitions, the role of statistical factors in the formation of spectral properties and the interrelationship among the luminescence-spectrum characteristics of rarefied vapors of complicated molecules, and the processes of energy transfer in collisions. The properties of polarized fluorescence of hot and jet-cooled vapors, the processes of relaxation of anisotropy in time and during collision reorientation, and transfer of anisotropy in photodisintegration are analyzed. We consider that two orientations of a regular matroid are equivalent if one can be obtained from the other by successive reorientations of positive circuits and/or positive cocircuits. We study the inductive deletion-contraction structure of these equivalence classes in the set of orientations, and we enumerate these classes as evaluations of the Tutte polynomial. Chemotaxis plays a crucial role in the realization of various functions of human life such as fertilization, immune function, inflammatory response, regeneration processes, etc. Inspired by the natural chemotaxis, colloidal motors with chemotactic ability can realize intelligent sense and targeted navigation, which bring a revolutionary method to biomedical applications like precision medicine. However, the application in the biomedical field requires the colloidal motors with submicrometer scale, strong chemotactic ability and clear chemotactic mechanism. In this Concept article, we introduce the recent progress of chemotactic colloidal motors, covering the fundamental theory behind experimental advancements. Particularly, the torque-driven reorientation motion of the submicrometer-sized colloidal motors during chemotaxis is discussed, and also their underlying mechanism is proposed. With the continuous research on chemotactic colloidal motors, it is believed that the emerging chemotactic colloidal motors will broaden practical applications in the biomedical field.  相似文献

The magnetothermal properties of pseudo binary Ho1−xErxAl2 alloys have been investigated by heat capacity measurements. Two anomalies are observed in the heat capacity of HoAl2. A sharp peak at 20 K represents the first order spin reorientation transition, and a second order anomaly occurs in the vicinity of the ferromagnetic transition at 32 K. As Ho is partially replaced by Er in Ho1−xErxAl2 the sharpness of the first order heat capacity peak diminishes with increasing Er concentration, while the temperature of this transition remains practically unaffected. The second order ferromagnetic transition shifts to higher temperature region with increasing Er concentration. The observed behaviors are explained considering the geometry of 4f charge densities of Ho3+ and Er3+ and the easy magnetization directions of HoAl2 and ErAl2.  相似文献

The phase separation behavior of near-critical ionic sodium-dodecyl-sulfate (SDS) micellar solution under a sinusoidal electric field was investigated by phase-contrast optical microscopy and by the small-angle dynamic light scattering method. The sinusoidal electric field significantly deformed the concentration domains and shifted the phase separation temperature. The autocorrelation function under a sinusoidal electric field was measured in the vicinity of a phase separation temperature range of 0.10 K < Tp – T < 0.97 K, where Tp – T is the temperature distance from the phase separation temperature in quiescent state Tp. The correlation function with an oscillatory part in the longer correlation time region was observed. The occurrence of the oscillatory mode, which depended on both the applied field frequency and the ambient temperature, indicates deformation of concentration fluctuation domains by dynamical coupling between the phase separation and the applied sinusoidal electric field. Novel ortho-palladated phenylpyrimidine-1,3-diketonato organyls with successively increasing numbers of alkyl chains were synthesized and investigated by polarizing optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction. A discontinuous transition from a lamellar to a columnar organization is observed, dependent on the number of chains: molecules with four or five chains from smectic phases (SmA, SmC), the related compound with six chains in the molecule is nonmesomorphic, whereas molecules with seven or eight chains form hexagonal columnar mesophases.  相似文献

Multiferroic properties in a polycrystalline terbium orthoferrite are investigated. Different thermomagnetic behaviors are observed in different magnetic fields, which is attributed to the suppression of the low temperature magnetic phase by an external magnetic field. Further studies reveal that the ferroelectricity originates from the spin configuration below3.5 K. In addition, the magnetic field control of electric polarization and dielectric constant is observed, which suggests a magnetoelectric effect in TbFeO3. The origin of ferroelectricity in this rare-earth orthoferrite is discussed.  相似文献

Polymer stabilization of the blue phase induced a wide temperature range of more than 60 K, but the high driving voltage and the large switching hysteresis compared to the low molecular weight blue phase of the chiral nematic liquid crystal. In this study, we newly proposed electric field-induced-polymer stabilization of blue phase (EFIPSBP) which the electric field was applied to the blue phase during polymer stabilization and investigated the driving voltage and the switching hysteresis using various voltage-applied EFIPSBP cells. We confirmed that the driving voltage and the switching hysteresis of the EFIPSBP cell were decreased compared to those of conventional polymer stabilized BP at 8OCB chiral nematic liquid crystal mixture. This could be suggested as a potential method for improving the driving voltage and the switching hysteresis of conventional polymer stabilized BP.  相似文献
