Nucleation of 2D islands in Si/Si(1 1 1)-7 × 7 molecular beam epitaxy is studied using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). A detailed analysis of the population of small amorphous clusters coexisting on the surface with epitaxial 2D islands has been performed. It is shown that small clusters tend to form pairs. The pairs serve as precursors for 2D islands as confirmed by direct STM observations of the smallest 2D islands covering two adjacent half-unit cells of the 7 × 7 reconstruction. It is proved with scaling arguments that the critical nucleus for 2D island formation consists not only of the pair itself, but also includes additional adatoms not belonging to the stable clusters.  相似文献

Density functional calculations have been used to investigate the (0 0 1) surface of cubic SrZrO3 with both SrO and ZrO2 termination. Surface structure and electronic structure have been obtained. The SrO surface is found to be similar to its counterpart in SrTiO3, while there are marked differences between the ZrO2 and TiO2 terminations in SrZrO3 and SrTiO3, respectively, concerning surface relaxation and rumpling. For the ZrO2-terminated surface of SrZrO3, the covalency of the interaction between the outmost Zr and the O beneath is enhanced as a result of their bond contraction. The band gap reduction and the presence of the surface states are also discussed in relation with the behavior of the electrostatic potential.  相似文献

This is a review of the wetting properties of solid helium on various solid substrates. Due to its extreme purity and to its very fast growth dynamics, solid helium 4 is often considered as a model system in materials science. Experiments designed to crystallize gas hydrate from dissolved CO2 in natural porous media are used to study nucleation under varying thermodynamic conditions. We recover quantitative information from these experiments using a stochastic model for the nucleation process. The effect and efficiency of three nucleating agents, a sorbitol based clarifier, a traditional heterogeneous nucleating agent and poly(vinylcyclohexane) (PVCH) was studied in polypropylene (iPP) homopolymer. The nucleating agents were added to iPP in different amounts; PVCH in 0–200 ppm, while the other two in 0–2000 ppm. Optical and mechanical properties were determined on injection molded plates or bars, respectively. Nucleation efficiency was studied by thermal analysis, while structure was characterized by polarized light (PLM), scanning electron (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Nucleus density was calculated using the method of Lamberti, which is based on the kinetic theory of the crystallization developed by Lauritzen and Hoffmann. The results proved that the nucleating agents modify properties in different ways and extent. PVCH is very efficient already at small concentrations and increases the stiffness of iPP considerably more than the other two compounds. On the other hand, the clarifier and the traditional nucleating agent induce better optical properties even at smaller efficiency. The structure developing in the presence of the three nucleating agents is also different. The clarifier forms a network in iPP and induces the formation of a microcrystalline structure according to the former literature data. Microspherulitic structure develops in the presence of the heterogeneous nucleating agent studied, while relatively large supermolecular units form in iPP nucleated by PVCH even under the conditions of injection molding. The calculation of nucleus density by existing models and the comparison of the results to optical properties proved that haze is determined by the size of the supermolecular units of the polymer and this latter depends on nucleus density.  相似文献

The electronic structure and the electron dynamics of the clean InAs(1 1 1)A 2 × 2 and the InAs(1 1 1)B 1 × 1 surfaces have been studied by laser pump-and-probe photoemission spectroscopy. Normally unpopulated electron states above the valence band maximum (VBM) are filled on the InAs(1 1 1)A surface due to the conduction band pinning above the Fermi level (EF). Accompanied by the downward band banding alignment, a charge accumulation layer is confined to the surface region creating a two dimensional electron gas (2DEG). The decay of the photoexcited carriers above the conduction band minimum (CBM) is originated by bulk states affected by the presence of the surface. No occupied states were found on the InAs(1 1 1)B 1 × 1 surface. This fact is suggested to be due to the surface stabilisation by the charge removal from the surface into the bulk. The weak photoemission intensity above the VBM on the (1 1 1)B surface is attributed to electron states trapped by surface defects. The fast decay of the photoexcited electron states on the (1 1 1)A and the (1 1 1)B surfaces was found to be τ1 1 1 A ? 5 ps and τ1 1 1 B ?  4 ps, respectively. We suggest the diffusion of the hot electrons into the bulk is the decay mechanism.  相似文献

A significant fraction of the total number of particles present in the atmosphere is formed originally by nucleation from the gas phase. Binary nucleation of sulphuric acid and water, ternary nucleation of sulphuric acid, water and ammonia and ion-induced nucleation are thought to be the most important aerosol nucleation processes in the atmosphere. Within the last two decades, instrumentation to observe and characterize nucleation has improved greatly and numerous observations of nucleation have been made including quantification of the nucleation rate, characterization of the growth process and first chemical characterizations of the freshly formed particles. Nucleation has been observed at many different places in the atmosphere: in the boundary layer, in the free troposphere, in remote locations, in coastal areas, in boreal forests as well as urban areas and pollution plumes. In most cases gaseous sulphuric acid is assumed to be the key precursor gas. After nucleation, other supersaturated substances, especially low vapour pressure organics often take part in the subsequent aerosol growth. Iodine oxides seem to be responsible for nucleation observed in some coastal areas.Recent advances in modelling allow for a kinetic treatment of the nucleation process based on measured thermochemical data for the cluster formation. Considerable improvement over the classical nucleation treatment is expected from this approach.A detailed understanding of atmospheric aerosol nucleation processes is needed as the freshly formed particles directly influence the number concentration and size distribution of the atmospheric aerosol. The formation of clouds and precipitation is affected and influences on climate are anticipated. Anthropogenic emissions influence atmospheric aerosol nucleation processes considerably.Despite the comprehensive research efforts, substantial inconsistencies remain and conflicting results of laboratory studies, model studies as well as atmospheric observations persist. Several key questions about the predictability of atmospheric nucleation in general, about the substances, that take part in nucleation and subsequent growth and about the size and composition of the critical cluster, have not been resolved so far. According to the basic idea of classical yin-yang complementarity and modern dual-complementarity, in a simple and unified new way proposed by Luo, the unconventional Hamilton-type variational principles for electromagnetic elastodynamics can be established systematically. This new variational principles can fully characterize the initial-boundary-value problem of this dynamics. In this paper, the expression of the generalized principle of virtual work for electromagnetic dynamics is given. Based on this equation, it is possible not only to obtain the principle of virtual work in electromagnetic dynamics, but also to derive systematically the complementary functionals for eleven-field, nine-field and six-field unconventional Hamilton-type variational principles for electromagnetic elastodynamics, and the potential energy functionals for four-field and three-field ones by the generalized Legendre transformation given in this paper. Furthermore, with this approach, the intrinsic relationship among various principles can be explained clearly.  相似文献
