We add to the known examples of complete Kähler manifolds with negative sectional curvature by showing that the following three classes of domains in euclidean spaces also belong: perturbations of ellipsoidal domains in ?n, intersections of complex-ellipsoidal domains in ?2, and intersections of fractional linear transforms of the unit ball in ?2. In the process, we prove the following theorem in differential geometry: in the intersection of two complex-ellipsoidal domains in ?2, the sum of the Bergman metrics is a Kähler metric with negative curvature operator.  相似文献

We prove that every height-2 finite poset with three or more points has an incomparable pair {x, y} such that the proportion of all linear extensions of the poset in which x is less than y is between 1/3 and 2/3. A related result of Komlós says that the containment interval [1/3, 2/3] shrinks to [1/2, 1/2] in the limit as the width of height-2 posets becomes large. We conjecture that a poset denoted by V m + maximizes the containment interval for height-2 posets of width m+1.  相似文献

In 1957, N.G. de Bruijn showed that the symmetric group Sym(Ω) on an infinite set Ω contains a free subgroup on 2card(Ω) generators, and proved a more general statement, a sample consequence of which is that for any group A of cardinality card(Ω), the group Sym(Ω) contains a coproduct of 2card(Ω) copies of A, not only in the variety of all groups, but in any variety of groups to which A belongs. His key lemma is here generalized to an arbitrary variety of algebras V, and formulated as a statement about functors Set V. From this one easily obtains analogs of the results stated above with “group” and Sym(Ω) replaced by “monoid” and the monoid Self(Ω) of endomaps of Ω, by “associative K-algebra” and the K-algebra EndK (V) of endomorphisms of a K-vector-space V with basis Ω, and by “lattice” and the lattice Equiv(Ω) of equivalence relations on Ω. It is also shown, extending another result from de Bruijn's 1957 paper, that each of Sym(Ω), Self(Ω) and EndK(V) contains a coproduct of 2card(Ω) copies of itself.That paper also gave an example of a group of cardinality 2card(Ω) that was not embeddable in Sym(Ω), and R. McKenzie subsequently established a large class of such examples. Those results are shown here to be instances of a general property of the lattice of solution sets in Sym(Ω) of sets of equations with constants in Sym(Ω). Again, similar results - this time of varying strengths - are obtained for Self(Ω), EndK(V), and Equiv(Ω), and also for the monoid Rel(Ω) of binary relations on Ω.Many open questions and areas for further investigation are noted.  相似文献

We prove the conjecture of Falikman-Friedland-Loewy on the parity of the degrees of projective varieties of n×n complex symmetric matrices of rank at most k. We also characterize the parity of the degrees of projective varieties of n×n complex skew symmetric matrices of rank at most 2p. We give recursive relations which determine the parity of the degrees of projective varieties of m×n complex matrices of rank at most k. In the case the degrees of these varieties are odd, we characterize the minimal dimensions of subspaces of n×n skew symmetric real matrices and of m×n real matrices containing a nonzero matrix of rank at most k. The parity questions studied here are also of combinatorial interest since they concern the parity of the number of plane partitions contained in a given box, on the one hand, and the parity of the number of symplectic tableaux of rectangular shape, on the other hand.  相似文献

Smooth, complex, ruled surfaces embedded in ℙ5 as linearly normal scrolls, such that they are contained in a quadric cone, are considered. In this article a unified approach is presented to hypertopologies on collections of nonempty closed subsets of a Hausdorff uniform space generated by a saturated and separating family of pseudo-metrics. One identifies here a suitable topology on the family of proper, convex and lower semicontinuous functions defined on a Hausdorff locally convex space for which the Young Fenchel transform is bicontinuous. Let X be an infinite dimensional real reflexive Banach space with dual space X and GX, open and bounded. Assume that X and X are locally uniformly convex. Let T:XD(T)→2X be maximal monotone and strongly quasibounded, S:XD(S)→X maximal monotone, and C:XD(C)→X strongly quasibounded w.r.t. S and such that it satisfies a generalized (S+)-condition w.r.t. S. Assume that D(S)=LD(T)∩D(C), where L is a dense subspace of X, and 0∈T(0),S(0)=0. A new topological degree theory is introduced for the sum T+S+C, with degree mapping d(T+S+C,G,0). The reason for this development is the creation of a useful tool for the study of a class of time-dependent problems involving three operators. This degree theory is based on a degree theory that was recently developed by Kartsatos and Skrypnik just for the single-valued sum S+C, as above.  相似文献

We show that there exists a family of Riemannian metrics on the tangent bundle of a two-sphere, which induces metrics of constant curvature on its unit tangent bundle. In other words, given such a metric on the tangent bundle of a two-sphere, the Hopf map is identified with a Riemannian submersion from the universal covering space of the unit tangent bundle, equipped with the induced metric, onto the two-sphere. A hyperbolic counterpart dealing with the tangent bundle of a hyperbolic plane is also presented.  相似文献
