In this work the elastic field of an edge dislocation in a half-space with the effect of surface energy has been obtained. The elastic field is then used to study the image force on the dislocation, the critical thickness for dislocation generation in epitaxial thin films with strain mismatch and the yielding strength of thin films on substrates. The results show that the image forces on the dislocation deviate from the conventional solutions when the distance of the dislocation from the free surface is smaller than several times of the characteristic length. Also due to the effect of surface energy, the critical thickness for dislocation generation is smaller than that predicted by the conventional elastic solutions and the extent of the deviation depends on the magnitude of mismatch strain. In contrast, the effect of surface energy on the yielding strength for many practical thin films can be neglected except for some soft ones where the characteristic length is comparable to the thickness. 相似文献

Some features od the constitutive behaviour of voided materials taking into account possible effects of the Lode angle in the yielding behaviour of the matrix are discussed. The Gurson approach is used to this end. After providing a parametric representation of the effective behaviour of such materials, some closed-form results are given for pure shear stress states and also at very high stress triaxialities. In the former case corresponding to a zero macroscopic mean stress, the contour of the yield domain in the π-plane has exactly the shape of the yield surface of the matrix in the deviatoric plane, but a size reduced by a factor , with f the porosity of the voided material. In the latter, effective yield stresses for the voided material are slightly different from the Gurson result and found to be set by the yield stress at a microscopic stress Lode angle for very high positive triaxiality and by the yield stress at a microscopic stress Lode angle 0 for very high negative triaxiality. This last result is extended for porous materials with yielding depending further on the hydrostatic stress, fully exhibiting the interaction between volumetric and shear interactions on the yielding behaviour of isotropic porous materials. Positron Annihilation Lifetime Spectroscopy (PALS) measurements were conducted on polycarbonate subjected to either thermal expansion or to tensile and compressive strains. It was found that thermal expansion affected both the nanometer hole size and the hole number density, whereas mechanical stress affected mainly the size of existing holes, and did not generate or eliminate holes in the quasielastic deformation region. The effect of stress on yield and postyield behavior of this glassy material was also investigated. The deduced hole volume fraction of this polymer at 25°C was 6.8 ± 0.5% from the thermal expansion experiment and 7.2 ± 1.2% from the mechanical loading experiment. When the specimen was under compression, the hole volume fraction was found to continuously decrease. This can be considered as evidence of the inability of the free volume concept in explaining the yield behavior of glassy polymers. ©1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. 相似文献

The miscibility, mechanical properties, morphology and toughening mechanism of PC/PBA-PMMA blends were investigated. The dynamic mechanical results show that PC/PBA-PMMA blend has good miscibility and strong interfacial adhesion. The Izod impact strength of blend PC/PBA-PMMA with 4% (volume fraction) PBA-PMMA core-shell modifier is 16 times higher than that of pure PC. The core-shell volume fraction and thickness of the PMMA shell have effect on the toughness of PC/PBA-PMMA blends. As PMMA volume fraction increases, the toughness of PC/PBA-PMMA blend increases, and reaches a maximum value at 30% volume fraction of PMMA or so. The tensile properties of PC/PBA-PMMA blend with a minimum amount of PBA-PMMA modifier show that brittle-tough transition has no significant variance in comparison with that of pure PC. The scanning electron microscopic (SEM) observation indicates that the toughening mechanism of the blend with the pseudo-ductile matrix modified by small core-shell latex polymer particles is the synergetic effect of cavitation and shear yielding of the matrix. 相似文献

The strain recovery of three syndiotactic polypropylenes (s‐PPs) differing in the percentage of [rrrr] pentad is investigated. A suitable method based on loading–unloading tests at constant displacement rate in tensile loading conditions is adopted to measure the residual and recovered strain components of the applied strain. The method allows to obtain a large amount of data from few tests and to explore a wide strain range. The dependence of the material's strain recovery on the applied strain is analyzed in relation to s‐PP strain‐induced microstructural changes and crystalline form transitions, which are reported in literature. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
