We provide here experimental data on the phonon density-of-states of MgB2 obtained by the inelastic neutron scattering technique. The measurements were performed for the natural boron-based magnesium
diboride with use of a time-of-flight neutron spectrometer. Several phonon bands were observed in the phonon spectrum at energies
of about 33, 55, 82 and 99 meV. We show that the cut-off energy of the density-of-states occurs at around 105 meV which is
much higher than expected so far from heat-capacity data and partially explains the high T
c
value observed for MgB2. The characteristic phonon energies are indicative of an intermediate coupling regime in this compound. We conclude that
a much needed neutron experiment aimed at the study of the isotopic effect in the phonon density-of-states of MgB2 is conceivable.

The frequency of the Raman active A1g radial breathing mode has been widely used as a tool to estimate the distribution of diameters of single wall carbon nanotubes
(SWNT). However, the relation between frequency and diameter is not straightforward and results are model-dependent. Because
most of the experiments are performed on bundles and not on isolated tubes, the model should especially take into account
the van der Waals intertube interactions. Here, we use a pair-potential approach to account for such interactions and we derive
a nonlinear relation between the SWNT diameter and the frequency of the A1g radial breathing modes. We demonstrate a good agreement between calculations and the diameters derived from diffraction experiments
on the same samples.

The aim of this work is to study the porosity of three-dimensional and two-dimensional packing of stiff cylindrical fibres
according to their aspect ratio. First, we have carried out an experimental study of the porosity for 3D and 2D packing. In
this last case, the elementary representative surfaces have been determined. Then, an attempt of interpretation of the porosity
variations for 2D stacks has been realized on the basis of the excluded volume theory and a variation law has been proposed.
To conclude, we have studied the relevance of a simplified packing model based on a single geometry of the defects.

Concentric-shell fullerenes, also called carbon onions, produced by carbon ion implantation into silver thin films, and subsequently
deposited on a silica substrate, were studied by optical transmission spectroscopy in the wavelength range 0.2 - 1.2 μm. In
this interval, the strongest absorption is due to the π-plasmon of sp2-like carbon. The position of the plasmon absorption band clearly evolved from 265 nm at low fluence to 230 nm at high implantation
fluences. A simulation of the optical spectra based on dielectric models of the concentric-shell fullerenes layer allowed
us to identify the first peak as due to disordered graphite and the latter to the carbon onions. The concentration of residual
graphite and the filling fraction of the carbon onions produced at high fluences could be estimated by fitting the optical
spectra with computed transmittance curves.

Pure titania porous layers consisted of anatase and rutile phases, chemically and structurally suitable for catalytic applications, were grown via micro-arc oxidation (MAO). The effect of applied voltage, process time, and electrolyte concentration on surface structure, chemical composition, and especially photocatalytic activity of the layers was investigated. SEM and AFM studies revealed that pore size and surface roughness of the layers increased with the applied voltage, and the electrolyte concentration. Moreover, the photocatalytic performance of the layers synthesized at medium applied voltages was significantly higher than that of the layers produced at other voltages. About 90% of methylene blue solution was decomposed after 180 min UV-irradiation on the layers produced in an electrolyte with a concentration of 10 g l−1 at the applied voltage of 450 V. 相似文献

Single crystals of U(Ni1-xPdx)2Si2 with x = 0.05, 0.09 and 0.135 have been grown. Magnetization and electrical resistivity measurements were performed in a wide range
of temperatures and magnetic fields in order to study stability of magnetic phases in the solid solutions between UNi2Si2 and UPd2Si2 with a special emphasis on the type of ground state. In UPd2Si2 the simple AFI-type antiferromagnetic structure of U moments is observed at low temperatures. UNi2Si2 adopts the uncompensated AF structure (UAF) with the + + - stacking of U moments along the c-axis and consequently this compound exhibits a spontaneous magnetization corresponding to 1/3 of the U moment. The substitution
of Pd for Ni leads to a rapid decay of the spontaneous magnetization. The evolution of magnetization and electrical resistivity
behavior with Pd doping is tentatively attributed to the coexistence of the AF-I and UAF phases in the ground state of U(Ni0.91Pd0.09)2Si2 and U(Ni0.865Pd0.135)2Si2. In this scenario, the volume fraction of the AF-I phase rapidly grows with Pd doping on account of the UAF. At lowest temperatures
an irreversible transition to the UAF phase is observed when a sufficiently high magnetic field is applied along the c-axis.

We show that considerable orbital magnetic moments and magneto-crystalline anisotropy energies are obtained for a Fe monatomic
wire described in a tight-binding method with intra-atomic electronic interactions treated in a full Hartree Fock (HF) decoupling
scheme.
Even though the use of the orbital polarization ansatz with simplified Hamiltonians leads to fairly good results when the
spin magnetization is saturated this is not the case of unsaturated systems. We conclude that the full HF scheme is necessary

The soft deposition of Ni13 and Cu13 clusters on Ni(111) and Cu(111) surfaces is studied by
means of constant-energy molecular-dynamics simulations.
The atomic interactions are described by the Embedded Atom Method.
It is shown that the shape of the nickel clusters deposited on Cu(111) surfaces remains rather intact,
while the copper clusters impacting on Ni(111) surfaces collapse forming double and triple layered
products. Furthermore, it is found that for an impact energy of 0.5 eV/atom the structures of all
investigated clusters show the lowest similarity to the original structures, except for the case of
nickel clusters deposited on a Cu(111) surface. Finally, it is demonstrated that when cluster and
substrate are of different materials, it is possible to control whether the deposition results in
largely intact clusters on the substrate or in a spreading of the clusters. This separation into
hard and soft clusters can be related to the relative cohesive energy of the crystalline materials. 相似文献

A novel design method for high Q piezoelectric resonators was presented and proposed using the 3-D equations of linear piezoelectricity with quasi-electrostatic
approximation which include losses attributed to mechanical damping in solid and resistance in current conduction. There is
currently no finite element sofware for estimating the Q of a resonator without apriori assumptions of the resonator impedance or damping. There is a necessity for better and more
realistic modeling of resonators and filters due to miniaturization and the rapid advances in frequency ranges in telecommunication.
We presented new three-dimensional finite element models of quartz and barium titanate resonators with mechanical damping
and resistance in current conduction. Lee, Liu and Ballato’s 3-D equations of linear piezoelectricity with quasi-electrostatic
approximation which include losses attributed to mechanical damping in solid and resistance in current conduction were formulated
in a weak form and implemented in COMSOL. The resulting finite element model could predict the Q and other electrical parameters for any piezoelectric resonator without apriori assumptions of damping or resistance. Forced
and free vibration analyses were performed and the results for the Q and other electrical parameters were obtained. Comparisons of the Q and other electrical parameters obtained from the free vibration analysis with their corresponding values from the forced
vibration analysis were found to be in excellent agreement. Hence, the frequency spectra obtained from the free vibration
analysis could be used for designing high Q resonators. Results for quartz thickness shear AT-cut and SC-cut resonators and thickness stretch poled barium titanate resonators
were presented. An unexpected benefit of the model was the prediction of resonator Q with energy losses via the mounting supports. 相似文献
