Physico-chemical aspects of polyethylene processing in an open mixer. Part 29: Experimental kinetics and mechanisms of γ-lactone formation

The experimental kinetics for γ-lactone formation shows more complexity than that for acids. Nonetheless, it can be concluded to the existence of a constant rate of formation from the beginning of the experiments with polyethylene melts. There is an additional term contributing to γ-lactone formation in the initial stages that is cubic in processing time. In the advanced stages of processing, in the high temperature range (170-200 °C), the concentration of γ-lactones increases linearly with the processing time.There are many mechanisms susceptible to give γ-lactones on polyethylene melt processing. Some of them are based on decomposition of intermediates formed directly on chain propagation. This is so for the α,γ-keto-hydroperoxides in 4-position to hydroxyl groups. Since decomposition of these intermediates is very fast, the reaction might account for a constant rate of γ-lactone formation from the beginning of polyethylene processing. Decomposition of the α,δ-keto-hydroperoxides formed on intramolecular reactions on chain propagation is not so fast as that of the α,γ-keto-hydroperoxides. Nonetheless, it might account for part of the delayed formation of γ-lactones. The same is valid for the mechanisms based on peroxidation of aldehydes and γ-hydroxy trans-vinylene groups that involve intermediates that are formed on polyethylene peroxidation. They might be important for explaining the cubic term as well as γ-lactone formation in the advanced stages of polyethylene processing.

Integral-Type Darboux Transformations for the mKdV Hierarchy with Self-Consistent Sources

We present integral-type Darboux transformation for the mKdV hierarchy and for the mKdV hierarchy withself-consistent sources. In contrast with the normal Darboux transformation, the integral-type Darboux transformationscan offer non-auto-Backlund transformation between two (2n 1)-th mKdV equations with self-consistent sources withdifferent degrees. This kind of Darboux transformation enables us to construct the N-soliton solution for the mKdVhierarchy with self-consistent sources. We also propose the formulas for the m times repeated integral-type Darbouxtransformations for both mKdV hierarchy and mKdV hierarchy with self-consistent sources.     

Study of the peak effect phenomenon in single crystals of 2H-NbSe2

The weakly pinned single crystals of the hexagonal 2H-NbSe₂ compound have emerged as prototypes for determining and characterizing the phase boundaries of the possible order-disorder transformations in the vortex matter. We present here a status report based on the ac and dc magnetization measurements of the peak effect phenomenon in three crystals of 2H-NbSe₂, in which the critical current densities vary over two orders of magnitude. We sketch the generic vortex phase diagram of a weakly pinned superconductor, which also utilizes theoretical proposals. We also establish the connection between the metastability effects and pinning.     

GENERALIZED CIRCLES AND THEIR CONFORMAL MAPPING IN A SUBSPACE OF A WEYL SPACE

The authors give the necessary and sufficient conditions for a generalized circle in a Weyl hypersurface to be generalized circle in the enveloping Weyl space. They then obtain the neccessary and sufficient conditions under which a generalized concircular transformation of one Weyl space onto another induces a generalized transformation oil its subspaces. Finally, it is shown that any totally geodesic or totally umbilical hypersurface of a generalized concircularly flat Weyl space is also generalized concircularly flat.     

Dirac on Gauges and Constraints

We examine the relevance of Dirac's view on the use of transformation theory and invariants in modern physics to current reflections on the meaning of physical symmetries, especially gauge symmetries.     

Peritectic phase growth in directionally solidified Cu-70% Sn alloy

The growth mechanism of the peritectic η phase involving the peritectic reaction and peritectic transformation in Cu-70%Sn alloy was investigated under directional solidification. The results show that a major growth mechanism in thickening of the peritectic η-layer is not the peritectic reaction but the peritectic transformation. The transformation temperature and isothermal time play crucial roles in determining the volume fraction and the thickness of the peritectic η phase. With the increase of the temperature and isothermal time, the volume fraction of the peritectic η phase increases. The regressed data show that the relationship between the thickness of η phase (Δx) and the transformation temperature (T) meets the following equation In Δx=6.5−1673 1 / T. Additionally, there exists a relationship between the thickness of the η phase (Δx) and the isothermal time (t) at the 9 mm solidification distance below the peritectic reaction interface, Δx=0.72t ^1/2, which is consistent with the theoretical model.
