Comparison of the sensitivity of 11 crosslinked hyaluronic acid gels to bovine testis hyaluronidase

Crosslinked hyaluronan gels are used in various applications where their stability is a prerequisite. The sensitivity of such gels to hyaluronidase can be determined as an index of stability by several approaches: chromatography, electrophoresis, and viscometry. We describe here a test based on the colorimetric determination of the N-acetyl-d-glucosamine released by hyaluronidase in standardized conditions. The sensitivities to bovine testicular hyaluronidase of 11 different gels used to fill skin wrinkles (Restylane; Perlane; Juvéderm 18, 24, 24HV, 30, and 30HV; Surgiderm 18, 24XP, 30, and 30XP) were compared.The method was reproducible, easy to perform, not time-consuming and allowed us to demonstrate that the sensitivity to testicular hyaluronidase was dependent on the degree of crosslinking of the gels and also on their monophasic/biphasic nature. Under our conditions, Surgiderm 30, 24XP and 30XP were the most resistant gels.We propose to retain the hyaluronidase test to predict the in situ stability of a crosslinked gel used to fill skin wrinkles.     

Photon interaction studies using 241Am γ-rays

We have carried out some photon interaction measurements using 59.54 keV γ-rays from a ²⁴¹Am source. These include γ attenuation studies as well as photoelectric absorption studies in various samples. The attenuation studies have been made using leaf and wood samples, samples like sand, sugar etc., which contain particles of varying sizes as well as pellets and aqueous solutions of rare earth compounds. In the case of the leaf and wood samples, we have used the γ-ray attenuation technique for the determination of the water content in fresh and dried samples. The variation of the attenuation coefficient with particle size has been investigated for sand and sugar samples. The attenuation studies as well as the photoelectric studies in the case of rare earth elements have been carried out on samples containing such elements whose K-absorption edge energies lie below and close to the γ-energy used. Suitable compounds of the rare earth elements have been chosen as mixture absorbers in these investigations. A narrow beam good geometry set-up was used for the attenuation measurements. A well-shielded scattering geometry was used for the photoelectric measurements. The mixture rule was invoked to extract the values of the mass attenuation coefficients for the elements from those of the corresponding compounds. The results are consistent with theoretical values derived from the XCOM package.

Hamiltonian formulation of generalized quantum dynamics

The Hamiltonian formulation of the usual complex quantum mechanics in the theory of generalized quantum dynamics is discussed. After the total trace Lagrangian, total trace Hamiltonian and two kinds of Poisson brackets are introduced, both the equations of motion of some total trace functionals which are expressed by total trace Poisson brackets and the equations of motion of some operators which are expressed by the without-total-trace Poisson brackets are obtained. Then a set of basic equations of motion of the usual complex quantum mechanics are obtained, which are also expressed by the Poisson brackets and total trace Hamiltonian in the generalized quantum dynamics. The set of equations of motion are consistent with the corresponding Heisenberg equations. Project supported by Prof. T.D. Stereoselective synthesis of cis-p-menth-8-ene-1,7-diol, cis-p-menthane-1,7-diol, and cis-p-menthane-1,7,8-triol

The natural products cis-p-menthane-1,7-diol (cis-IV), cis-p-menth-8-ene-1,7-diol (cis-I) and cis-p-menthane-1,7,8-triol (cis-II) are obtained starting from the corresponding cis-cyanohydrins, cis-2 and cis-7, respectively, by chemical transformation of the cyano into the hydroxymethyl group. The key step of the synthesis is the very high cis-selectivity (> or = 96 %) of the MeHNL-catalyzed HCN addition to 4-alkylcyclohexanones. From 4-isopropylcyclohexanone (1) the cyanohydrin cis-2 and from 4-(1-methylvinyl)cyclohexanone (6) the cyanohydrin cis-7 result almost quantitatively. Regioselective hydroxylation of cis-I affords the triol cis-II. X-ray crystal structure determinations of the final products confirm their cis-configuration.     

An Alternative Method for Anomeric Deacetylation of Per-acetylated Carbohydrates

An alternative method for anomeric deacetylation of fully acetylated carbohydrates has been developed using imidazole in methanol.     

XPS,AFM, ATR and TPD evidence for terraced,dihydrogen terminated, 1×1 (100) silicon

Heating (100) silicon at high temperature (say, higher than 850 °C) in H₂, cooling to 670–700 °C in the same ambient, and quenching to room temperature in N₂ results in environmentally robust, terraced 1 × 1 (100) SiH₂. Evidence for this conclusion is based on angle‐resolved x‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, infrared absorption spectroscopy in the attenuated total reflection mode, thermal programmed desorption, and reflection high‐energy electron diffraction.
