Isotropic Tori,Complex Germ and Maslov Index,Normal Forms and Quasimodes of Multidimensional Spectral Problems

More than twenty years ago V. P. Maslov posed the question under what conditions it is possible to assign to invariant isotropic lower-dimensional tori of Hamiltonian systems sequences of asymptotic eigenvalues and eigenfunctions (spectral series) of the corresponding quantum mechanical and wave operators. In the present paper this question is answered in terms of the quadratic approximation to the theory of normal forms. We also discuss the quantization conditions for isotropic tori and their relation to topological, geometric, and dynamical characteristics (Maslov indices, rotation (winding) numbers, eigenvalues of dynamical flows, etc.).     

Construction of Invariant Torus Using Toeplitz Jacobian Matrices/Fast Fourier Transform Approach

The invariant torus is a very important case in the study of nonlinear autonomous systems governed by ordinary differential equations (ODEs). In this paper a new numerical method is provided to approximate the multi-periodic surface formed by an invariant torus by embedding the governing ODEs onto a set of partial differential equations (PDEs). A new characteristic approach to determine the stability of resultant periodic surface is also developed. A system with two strongly coupled van der Pol oscillators is taken as an illustrative example. The result shows that the Toeplitz Jacobian Matrix/Fast Fourier Transform (TJM/FFT) approach introduced previously is accurate and efficient in this application. The application of the method to normal multi-modes of nonlinear Euler beam is given in [1].     

Dynamics of Nonlinear Oscillators under Simultaneous Internal and External Resonances

An analysis is presented for a class of two degree of freedom weakly nonlinear oscillators, with symmetric restoring force. Conditions of one-to-three internal resonance and subharmonic external resonance of the lower vibration mode are assumed to be satisfied simultaneously. As a consequence, the second vibration mode may also be under the action of external primary resonance. Initially, a set of slow-flow equations is derived, governing the amplitudes and phases of approximate long time response of these oscillators, by applying an asymptotic analytical method. Determination of several possible types of steady-state motions is then reduced to solution of sets of algebraic equations. For all these solution types, appropriate stability analysis is also performed. In the second part of the study, this analysis is applied to an example mechanical system. First, a systematic search is performed, revealing effects of system parameters on the existence and stability properties of periodic motions. Frequency-response diagrams are presented and attention is focused on understanding the evolution and interaction of the various solution branches as the external forcing and nonlinearity parameters are varied. Finally, numerical integration of the equations of motion demonstrates that the system exhibits quasiperiodic or chaotic response for some parameter combinations.

Once-holed tori embedded in Riemann surfaces

Once-holed tori are the most primitive noncompact Riemann surfaces of positive genus, and consitute a partially ordered set, the order being defined in terms of conforaml embeddings. We consider some families of once-holed tori that are conformally embedded in target Riemann surfaces of conformal mappings of a given noncompact Riemann surface of genus one, and establish an analogue of the one-quarter theorem of Koebe. We also investigate families of once-holed tori conformally embedded in a Riemann surface of positive genus.      

Renormalization group study of quantum fluctuations near classical critical points of Hamiltonian systems

A general framework is considered for treating quantum corrections to the classical limit in the Wigner function formalism. We discuss the quantal effect on the classical phenomena such as period doubling and the breakup of KAM tori. By using an exact renormalization group method, the scaling factor for Planck's constant is derived as an eigenvalue of the linearized renormalization transformation.     

Asymptotic Formulae for Brillouin Index on Riemannian Manifolds

We establish several asymptotic formulae for Brillouin index on fiat tori. As an application of these formulae it is proved that the topological entropy of a geodesic flow on a fiat torus is zero.     

Real Places and Torus Bundles

If M is a hyperbolic once-punctured torus bundle over S ¹, then the trace field of M has no real places.
