Friedel-Crafts alkylation of indoles with epoxides catalyzed by nanocrystalline titanium(IV) oxide

Friedel-Crafts alkylation of indoles with epoxides to afford 3-alkyl indole derivatives at room temperature with moderate to good yields and high regioselectivity using nanocrystalline titanium(IV) oxide catalyst is described.     

Combinatorial computational chemistry approach of tight-binding quantum chemical molecular dynamics method to the design of the automotive catalysts

Recently, we have developed a new tight-binding quantum chemical molecular dynamics program “Colors” for combinatorial computational chemistry approach. This methodology is based on our original tight-binding approximation and realized over 5000 times acceleration compared to the conventional first-principles molecular dynamics method. In the present study, we applied our new program to the simulations on various realistic large-scale models of the automotive three-way catalysts, ultrafine Pt particle/CeO₂(111) support. Significant electron transfer from the Pt particle to the CeO₂(111) surface was observed and it was found to strongly depend on the size of the Pt particle. Furthermore, our simulation results suggest that the reduction of the Ce atom due to the electron transfer from the Pt particle to the CeO₂ surface is a main reason for the strong interaction of the Pt particle and CeO₂(111) support.     

A Mössbauer spectroscopic study of an industrial catalyst for dehydrogenation of etylbenzene to styrene

Iron oxide catalyst with spinel structure used for dehydrogenation of ethylbenzene is one kind of important catalyst in petrochemical industry. In this work several series of industrial catalyst were prepared with different components and different manufacturing processes. Mössbauer Spectroscopy has been used to determine the optimal components and the better manufacturing process for spinel structure formation. The results may prove useful for producing the industrial dehydrogenation catalyst with better catalytic property.     

Synthesis of perfluoroheptanal by ozonolysis of perfluoro-1-octene

Perfluoro-1-octene was used as a model for developing a method for the preparative ozonolysis of perfluoro-1-alkenes to the corresponding perfluoro-nor-alkenals. Perfluoroheptanal was synthesized.Translated fromIzvestiya Akademii Nauk. Seriya Khimicheskaya, No. 6, pp. 1146–1147, June, 1994.     

Spectroscopic study on the complex formation of chromogenic bridged calixarenes with aliphatic amines

The complex formation between chromogenic capped calix 4 arene derivatives comprising indophenol indicator group(s), and aliphatic amines has been studied by UV/Vis spectroscopy. The equilibrium constants have been determined in ethanol, and—for one ligand—also in dimethylsulfoxide. The results have been interpreted in terms of various types of host–guest interactions and of steric effects.     

Preparation of nanosized ZnO using α brass

Nanosized ZnOs were synthesized on the surface of α brass coated a film of nickel catalyst at 500-700 °C under atmosphere of O₂ and CH₄ gases. The nanosized ZnOs have shapes including pillar, leaf, sheet and rod, which were determined by the synthesis temperature and the flow rates of O₂ and CH₄ gases. The nanosized ZnOs were characterized by electron microscopy including transmission electron microscope for crystal structure, morphology and high resolution images, both field emission scanning electron microscope and scanning electron microscope for morphology, and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscope equipped in electron microscope for chemical composition. A mechanism was proposed for the growth of nanosized ZnO obtained in this work.     

Concise asymmetric synthesis of (−)-halosaline and (2R,9aR)-(+)-2-hydroxy-quinolizidine by ruthenium-catalyzed ring-rearrangement metathesis

A ruthenium-catalyzed ring opening-ring closing metathesis reaction serves as the key step in the stereoselective synthesis of a new enantiopure 2-substituted-4,5-dehydropiperidine skeleton, a valuable intermediate for the synthesis of piperidine alkaloids (such as (−)-halosaline) and of hydroxylated quinolizidines (such as (2R,9aR)-(+)-2-hydroxy-quinolizidine).     

Triruthenium dodecacarbonyl/triphenylphosphine catalyzed dehydrogenation of primary and secondary alcohols

Dehydrogenation of alcohols into aldehydes and ketones by Ru₃(CO)₁₂/PPh₃ based homogeneous catalysis has been investigated as an alternative for the classical Oppenauer oxidation. Several catalytic systems have been screened in the Oppenauer-like oxidation of alcohols. A systematic study of various combinations of Ru₃(CO)₁₂, mono- and bidentate ligands and hydride acceptors was performed to enable dehydrogenation of primary alcohols to stop at the aldehyde stage. Among many H-acceptors screened, diphenylacetylene (tolane) proved the most suitable judged from its smooth reduction. Electron rich and deficient analogues of tolane have been synthesized and, based on competition experiments between these H-acceptors, a tentative catalytic cycle for the Ru₃(CO)₁₂/PPh₃-catalyzed dehydrogenations has been proposed.
