MV-Algebra for Cultural Rules

This paper reports preliminary results on a new area of application of quantum structures, motivated by a reading of the 2004 monograph Reasoning in Quantum Theory. Ethnographers often describe a particular culture by describing rules of social relations that they assert characterize that culture. Viable cultures exist over periods of time, that is, over sequences of “generations”. To embody this, we define a suitable set of objects and relations, and a structure on which cultural rules act as “operators” on a set of “configurations” on generations. This yields an MV-algebra of those operators. This implies that culture theory might be studied as an example of the theory of quantum structures. The author acknowledges Dick Greechie in appreciation for the many comments he offered on this paper and on the development of this line of research. Useful comments of an unidentified reviewer helped clarify results. Only the author is responsible for any errors, and for the ideas asserted. An upper bound for permanents of nonnegative matrices

A recent conjecture of Caputo, Carlen, Lieb, and Loss, and, independently, of the author, states that the maximum of the permanent of a matrix whose rows are unit vectors in lp is attained either for the identity matrix I or for a constant multiple of the all-1 matrix J.The conjecture is known to be true for p=1 (I) and for p?2 (J).We prove the conjecture for a subinterval of (1,2), and show the conjectured upper bound to be true within a subexponential factor (in the dimension) for all 1<p<2. In fact, for p bounded away from 1, the conjectured upper bound is true within a constant factor.

Electrothermal atomization of calcium and strontium in a molybdenum micro-tube

The excitation and ionization of calcium and strontium in a molybdenum micro-tube atomizer and their use in atomic-absorption spectrometry are described. Increasing hydrogen flow led to complex calcium atomization profiles for absorption measurements, but decreasing hydrogen flow resulted in higher atomic emission. Ionization of calcium and its suppression by potassium were also observed. Strontium was measured effectively by atomic absorption because of the higher sensitivity. Increasing hydrogen flow resulted in a lower atomization temperature and higher absorption for strontium, while decreasing hydrogen flow resulted in higher atomic emission. No interference from 100-fold amounts of magnesium, calcium and sodium was found for atomization of strontium, but 100-fold amounts of aluminium shifted the peak temperature for strontium though with no variation of appearance temperature and peak absorption. A small shift in peak temperature was observed for strontium in the presence of 100-fold amounts of phosphate.     

A software package for computer-controlled flow-injection analysis

An automated flow-injection system is described, with a computer-controlled sample changer, injection device and photometer. The modular software package is understandable, flexible and easily adaptable to different computers.     

A simple spectrophotometric method for the determination of nylidrin hydrochloride, isoxsuprine hydrochloride and salbutamol sulphate in pharmaceutical preparations

A simple spectrophotometric method for the determination of nylidrin hydrochloride, isoxsuprine hydrochloride and salbutamol sulphate is described, based on measurement of the orangeyellow species produced when the drugs are coupled with diazotized benzocaine (p-aminoethyl benzoate) in trimethylamine medium. The method is applicable over the range 1-12 mug ml for isoxsuprine hydrochloride and nylidrin hydrochloride and 1-8 mug ml for salbutamol sulphate. The method is a modification of the Bratton-Marshall reaction and is simple, reproducible, accurate and more sensitive than those cited in the literature.

The nonkeratinous proteins of wool can be partly or completely dissolved by controlled enzymatic digestion. A comparison between the keratose content of intact wool and that of wool which has been hydrolysed for 96 h with pronase confirms that specifically all the nonkeratinous components are dissolved out of the wool composite by pronase. The influence of microbial infection can be excluded.The residue of wool after the hydrolysis, i. e., a wool low in nonkeratinous proteins, has a higher internal volume, as measured by mercury porosimetry. The centrifugal swelling test shows that these wool samples also have increased hygroscopy.
